ScienceWeek

Wow!Whatabusyweekwehavehad...Scienceweekhasbeenamazingwithsomanyexcitingactivitiesforchildren(andparents)todo.Wehavehadworkshopswithchildrenmakingrockets,paperaeroplanedesigningandtesting,scientistsrunningassemblies,the‘OwlMan’comingintosharehisbeautifulbirdsofpreyandtheiraerodynamiccapabilities,afantastic‘lightanddark’camp]ireevening,brilliant‘kitchensink’experiments(andmoretocomeinouropensessionthisafternoon).

Manythankstoeveryonewhohelpedthisweekhappen‐theparentsandteachersfordedicatingtheirtimetohelpoutatthecamp]ireeveningandaspecialthankyoutoJosieHocking,ourScienceleader,whoco‐ordinatedthewholeevent.Wearealreadylookingforwardtonextyear’sScienceweek!

Wewouldalsobereallygratefulifpeopledidnotsmokebytheschoolgatesatthebeginningandendoftheschoolday.Thankyou!

LanguageofthemonthWebelieveitisimportanttotakeaninterestinoneanother’slanguages.Currently37differentlanguagesarespokenatAshmead,includingSomali,French,Tamil,Japanese,Spanish,Yoruba,German,Turkish,Akan(Twi/Asante).

ThistermwehavebeenexcitedtobeginanewlanguageprogrammeinKS1called‘LanguageoftheMonth’.Eachmonthanewlanguageisselectedandteachersputupadisplayintheirclassroomsanduseshort,enjoyableactivitiestoteachseveralwordsfromtheLanguageoftheMonth.SofarwehavelearntphrasesandwordsinFrenchandAlbanian.

NexttermweareextendingtheschemetoKS2.OurnextlanguagethistermwillbeGermanandinJanuarywewillstarttheyearlearningsomewordsandphrasesinSomali.

IfyouspeaktheLanguageoftheMonthpleaseletusknow.WewouldloveParentsandCarerstocomeintotheclassroom,tohelpincreasechildren’sawarenessandknowledgeofotherpeople’slanguagesandcultures.

MathsWorkshopsInthenewyearwewillbestartingarunofMathsWorkshopsforyoutocometowithyourchild.Thesewillberunduringtheschooldaysothechildrencantakepartwithyou.Dateswillbeinthenextnewsletterandyourchild’sclassteacherwillgiveyoumoredetailsnearerthetime.

TheChristmasFairisnextSaturdayandweareplanningourusualraf]le‐todothisweneedyourhelp!Wehavealreadyhadanumberoffantasticdonationsbutwewouldlikeevenmore!Pleaseaskfriendsandneighbourstodonatetoo!Youmightknowsomeonewhorunsarestaurantwhoishappytoofferusafreemealfortwo/four.Ormaybesomeonewhohasashopwhocoulddonatesomegoodsorservices?

Wealsoneedhomemadeproduceforourfoodstall‐chutneys,jams,Christmaspuddingsetcwouldallsellwellandmakemoneyfortheschool.Lastofall,don’tforgettocomealongandsupportusontheday.Thefayrestartsat12pmandtherewillbeplentyoffoodtogivethefamilylunchhere!

PLEASEREAD­IMPORTANT!Wehavenoticedthatsomechildrenarebeingdroppedoffatthegatesorleftintheplaygroundbeforeschoolandparentsarenotwaitingwiththeirchildrenuntilthebellringsat9am.Thiscanresultinchildrenpushingthroughthegateat8.45a.m.iftheyarenotadequatelysupervised.CanIpleaseremindparentsthatchildrenwhoareinY5andY6whowalktoschoolbythemselvesneedasignedpermissionslipfromtheirparent/carer.ALLotherchildren(fromReceptiontoY6)shouldbewithanadultbeforeschool.Althoughmembersofstaffareintheplaygroundbeforeschoolwearenotthereinasupervisorycapacityforunattendedchildrenbutwearetheretoseeparentsandansweranyqueries.
