Principal’s Message:
These are busy days indeed! Please remember to take time relax and rest with your children in the coming weeks. Take time to include them in decorating, baking and shopping. Building those happy memories together is much more important than having the perfection that comes from having adults do it for the family. Staff are working hard to help students to be mindful, calm and ready to learn. Deep breathing, nature walks, stretching and moments of gratitude and appreciation are all ways that students can bring their best selves to the tasks at hand.

Field Trips
Div. 8 Students visited the local Fire Hall to learn about fire safety and careers in firefighting.

Report Cards
Report cards will be sent home on Friday, Dec. 9. The format is new and staff are happy to
answer questions that arise from these reports. It is important that parents and students have a
clear understanding of the marks and comments about their learning.
Homework Club
Gr. 3-7 students have the opportunity to attend Homework Club Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday 2:45-3:30 each week. Our resource team are on hand to provide tutoring, help with
projects and study support. Students need to bring work with them. We feed them a snack to
get them through and it’s free! How nice would it be to have your child come home with their
homework/study all done?
Christmas Hampers
The tree is up in the front foyer (by the gym). It has tags that represent items that are needed to
complete the hampers. If you are able to help, simply take a tag, and return it with item before
Dec. 14. We will pack and deliver the items on Dec. 16.
Christmas Concerts
Run-throughs on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
Dress Rehearsal Wednesday, Dec. 14.
Concerts : Thursday, Dec. 15 doors open at 12:30, concert at 1:00
Thursday, Dec. 15 doors open at 6:00, concert at 6:30
We do not require tickets but seating is limited. Please choose to attend only one of the
concerts. Students are asked to attend both.
Parking for the evening concert is always very tight. Consider walking as you will likely arrive
home more quickly than waiting to get out of the lot after the show.
Christmas Crafts – December 5/6 Our wonderful PAC sponsors crafts for kids for two full days. This gives each class an hour to
make crafts in the gym. They get to bring them home as gifts or decorations. Read the insert in
this newsletter for all the info. Volunteers are needed to make this event happen, if you can
help out please contact [email protected]
Icy parking lot and park areas
Great efforts are made to keep our school grounds safe from ice or frost. However, use caution
when entering the parking lot and sidewalks at all times.

Electronics Club
Group B will begin their turn for Electronics Club on Friday, Jan. 13. The school applied for an
innovation grant recently and were successful in securing $3,000 worth of additional supplies
for the club. Mr. Aliwalis and his colleagues are going to provide professional development for
our teachers so that these valuable resources can be used in classrooms as well.
Flipped Lunch Break
Our teachers have asked if we can, on a trial basis, have students eat before playing.
So for January we will:
12:00-12:15 Eat in Classrooms
12:15-12:40 Playtime Outside
The start and end times are the same but it will mean that those dropping off lunches and
helping with hot lunch will be affected.
Grade 7 Curling
In keeping with an end of first term traditions, the Grade Sevens have started their curling
program. This event has been made possible thanks to the volunteers of the Langley Curling
Association, our parent drivers, and a generous donation from the PAC for the ice rental. The
PAC provides $15 per student in support of outings like this!

Community Middle School Transition Process Underway
District staff met with parent representatives from the Brookswood, Walnut Grove, D.W.
Poppy, and Fundamental families of schools on November 23rd in order to share the timeline
for the consultation process with respect to the transition to a Middle school model in each of
the communities. Excellent feedback was provided by each of the family of school’s
representatives in terms of the information and format required in order to meet the needs of
their communities. The plan of the District Leadership Team is to proceed to on this process
concurrently with all communities going forward versus completing the process one community
at a time. The District Leadership Team hopes to bring the Long Term Facilities plan, with a
series of motions related to middle school programming, to the May 30th Board meeting. We
look forward to working with our communities to develop a plan that will provide an
outstanding educational experience for all of our students.
Our Brookswood consultation meetings will be held at Brookswood Secondary on the following
dates: Jan 17, Feb 22, Apr 26
No decisions regarding the location of the middle school or the timeline for opening a middle
school have been made. Come out and have your say, share your thoughts about the transition
ahead.
