grow ing BaSicS
Our free booklet “Our Secrets to Success with Proteas” provides a comprehensive list of basic rules for caring for proteas. Information is also available on our plant labels and website www.protea.com.au. The growing basics are summarized below:
• Full Sun: Most varieties require full sun for maximum flowers and colour although some varieties, such as Waratahs, can be grown in partial shade. A North facing position will maximize winter sunshine (Southern Hemisphere).
• Low Water Use: Proteas require little water once established. Regular watering will be needed for the first 18 months to establish. A natural mulch such as bark or straw is also recommended.
• Frost Tolerant: All varieties tolerate light frosts down to around -1° C. Some are more frost tolerant and will tolerate frosts to -3° C (see Plant Selection Chart). All plants should be protected while young.
• Well Drained Soils: Proteas need well drained acid soil (pH between 5 -7), some will tolerate heavier soils (see Plant Selection Chart). When planting in heavier soils encourage your customers to mix in gypsum to aid soil breakdown and mound soil to assist with drainage. When planted in containers use a potting mix suitable for natives. Proteas are not suitable for boggy areas.
• Low Food Requirement: Proteas do not need fertilizing when planted in gardens. In tubs a native slow release fertiliser applied at half the prescribed rate is recommended.
• Shaping and Management: Cut all flowers, prune to desired shape immediately after flowering.

Display IdeaseVery nurSery iS unique. Some nurseries like to stock a large range of varieties while others stock only the varieties that are in flower or full colour. The following guidelines may assist you in creating a great display of Proteaflora plants:
the BaSicS
When choosing a position to display Proteas, an open, sunny position is best. Ensure the plants receive enough water while in your nursery and that the water is able to drain away freely. If wanting to stock a range of Proteas, quantities of at least 6 per variety look best.
diSPlay en MaSSe
Coloured and flowering varieties provide a stunning feature when displayed en masse. For a little contrast, combine another variety of the same genus to encourage that extra sale. Great combo ideas and the best looking varieties are included in our fax cover sheet at the beginning of each month.
250MM diSPlay PotS Sell the dream to your customers by displaying an established plant in the middle of your display.
250mm pots are a great way to inspire your customers, showing them how a 140mm plant will look once mature. Another idea is to re-pot the 250mm variety into a fancy display pot for extra inspiration.
