Why Drill?Weneedtounderstandwhatlieshiddenunderground.InIllinois,beneathalandscapechangedbyglaciers,thesub-surfaceconsistsofmanydifferentkindsofmaterialsthataffectandareaffectedbyhumanactivities.Todiscoverwhatisbelowthesurface,geologistsmustdrillboreholes,removecoresofearthandrock,andanalyzethem.Geolo-gists then use their expertise to interpret the occurrence anddistributionofmaterialsbetweenboreholes.

Theinformationobtainedbydrillingisusedtoconstructbuildingsandtransportationcorridors,installutilities,developandmanagewaterandmineralresources,andplanforefficientandbeneficiallanduse,amongotheruses.

What Can You Expect?Before sampling starts, thepropertyischeckedforundergroundutilitiesusingJULIE.To prevent damage, selectedsitesmustbeonfirmground.Thedrillingteamavoidsmovingequipmentwhenthegroundissoftormuddy.Setuptimeisapproximately2hours.Samplingcanthenbegin.Continuous samplingaverages100feetperday.Thegeologistswillletyouknowhowdeeptheyintendtosample.Duringsampling,anontoxicmudmadeofneutralearthmaterialisused.Thewaterusedisfromamunicipalwatersourcetoavoidcontaminationoftheboreholewithstreamorpondwater.Uponcompletionofthesampledhole,theteamrunsdownholegammaandself-potential logs to further interpret the materials that havebeencollected.When continuous sampling and logging has been completed, ittakesabout4hourstoteardowntheequipmentandcleanit.Theequipmentcanthenbemovedfromyourproperty.TheboreholeispluggedinaccordancewiththeDepartmentofPublicHealthPart920IllinoisWaterWellConstructionCode.Thetop3feetarebackfilledwithdirt.Anydrillcuttingsleftatthesitewillbewashedawaywithwatersothattheymixwiththesoil.Thisisthefinalstepinthedrillingoperation.Withthepermissionofthelandowner,whereneeded,amonitoringwellisinstalledtomonitorthegroundwaterlevelandisusedtobetterunderstandourgroundwaterresourcesforpresentandfutureuse.Wecarryliabilityinsurance,weareverywillingtoshareallinformationweobtain,andwearecommittedtoworkingwithlandownerstomakesuretheyaresatisfiedwiththesiteconditionsafterweleave.
