DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The Chickering House is located on the northeast comer of Baltimore and Commerce Streets, facing south on Baltimore Street. Just east of this early nineteenth century mill house stands The Rooney House, Ho-224, a half house. Both these detached duplexes may date as early as 1814.
The Chickering House is a two story high, four bay wide, gabled roof (running east-west) brick (laid in running bond brick) structure with wide brick chimneys (running east-west) inset into the central brick wall of the house on each end of the roof. A rectangular entrance door is lo cated in the west bay, while the original east bay entrance has been altered to serve as a window. Fenestration is proportionally scaled and vertically aligned. Windows are rectangular, double-hung with six-over-six lights.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The Chickering House is located on the northeast corner of Baltimore and Commerce Street, facing south on Baltimore Street, in the heart of the Savage Historic District. As a part of this district, this mill house is significant historically, architecturally, industrially and in the area of community planning.
Historically the Chickering House is significant as one of the earliest duplexes in the district, estimated building date circa 1816. This date is established through its association with the construction of the Savage Cotton Mill, estimated to have been constructed circa 1816. (in the 1940 renovation of this building a window frame iwas found to have a blue-pencil inscription, "Ted Sullivan, April 16, 1816.")
Architecturally the Chickering House and its neighbor to the east, the Rooney House are unique in Savage. These two detached duplexes are slightly different thait their contempories of circa 1816-1840 date. See attachment 3, Savage Historic District Map. The Rooney House, see Ho-224, is a half house. The Chickering House has been completed so that it is a completed full gabled roof structure, while the Rooney House retains its original shed roof. The Chickering House is important architecturally as it indicates the completed plan of the original builder of the Rooney House and presents a visual lesson in _ American building practices. These houses serve to relieve the repetitions of stylistic detail and plan as reflected in the five mill houses diagonally opposite them on the south side of Baltimore Street.
Industrially and in the field of community planning they are significant for they were built to serve as homes for the mill hands of the Savage Cotton Mill. They serve to show how America's early industrialists planned for a total environment, constructing a residential area in close proximity to work. The area is laid out in a basic grid pattern with a very high percentage of the original old mill houses very much as they appeared in the nineteenth century.
