SEPTEMBER•OCTOBER 2014
Lots of people say they like this fine ale because it’s well balanced with a refreshing, hoppy flavour and a clean, bitter finish. We create the hoppy aroma and flavour using two varieties of English hop – Challenger and First Gold. Our brewers adds the hops to the copper by hand, just as we’ve always done, and by blending in pale, crystal and black malts he balances the hops with the richness of the malts.
The refreshing flavour of Greene King IPA makes it a great accompaniment to spicier foods and curries (though it’s always nice simply enjoyed with friends...).

Beer & Food Matching
• LAGER - The light, smooth flavour has a dry edge so is great paired with fish. • ALES - Classic British ales are perfect with their British food counterparts such as roasts, pies and steak. • SPECIALITY BEERS - Great for refreshing the palate after spicy foods. Blonde ales are great with creamy sauces and dressings whereas fruit beers go well with the bitterness of dark chocolate and tart summer berries.• CIDER - Pork cooked in cider is a tasty alternative to cooking with beer or wine.
20th September – 5th October
This September Cask Ale Week and British Food Fortnight coincide, offering the perfect opportunity to focus on natural and local ingredients to promote the partnership between beer and food aswell as draw in extra customers!
Beer is the perfect partner to all kinds of food and offers a larger variety of flavours than wine. It can also often work out cheaper for the customer than a full bottle of wine.
Pairing beer and food can provide you with the point of difference from your competitors and make you stand out from the crowd!
The Perfect Match
Spooktacular TIPS FOR HALLOWEEN “Shocktober” 31st
13th – 19th October
• Run a fancy dress competition; offer a prize to the customer with the best costume. Encourage bar staff to get in the holiday spirit and dress up.
• Cocktails provide high profit margins, so why not create your very own spooky selection of green and orange themed Halloween drinks?
• Stock up on seasonal ales such as Hobgoblin (the unofficial beer of Halloween), Black Sheep Reaper and the Moorhouse’s Witch range!
• Decorate your outlet with cobwebs, pumpkins and skeletons.
• Make a spooky soundtrack! Include Halloween classics such as Ghostbusters, Highway to Hell, Monster Mash and of course, Thriller!
• Create your own trick or treat envelopes to be given with certain drinks purchased. Offer meal vouchers or a free bottle of wine to the lucky winners.
• Halloween games such as bobbing apples, pin the nose on the skull and pumpkin hunts are irresistible to the young at heart.
• Halloween is a great family occasion and falls during half-term making it the perfect opportunity to attract families during the afternoon and early evening - host a family themed event such as a barbecue (weather permitting!)
Continue the trend into National Curry Week • Curry matches perfectly with a variety of strong-hopped IPAs
• Stouts complement rich, creamy curry such as korma
Experimenting is key to finding the perfect match, but here are a few basic guidelines!
Halloween is a perfect event to boost profits in your outlet! It’s a fun, social occasion that involves drinking, eating and decorations - in other words an ideal event for pubs! Draw the crowds this October with these frightastic top tips:
Halloween falls on a Friday this year so make the most of it and have a treat of a weekend!
Following on from the success of 2013, Cask Ale Week is a national event organised by Cask Marque celebrating the nation’s favourite drink and the home of cask ale – the Great British Pub! Breweries, pub companies and pubs across the country support the event by organising a range of exciting activities including tutored tastings, special brews and offers, promotions, free pints and much, much more!
This brochure gives you a fantastic range of cask ales at great prices which you could showcase during the week encouraging existing customers to try new ales and tempting new customers.
FREE PINTS ALL ROUND!This year the Daily Telegraph is supporting Cask Ale Week with a free pint offer in pubs. Get involved! This is a sure fire way of increasing footfall in your outlet during Cask Ale Week!
TRY BEFORE YOU BUYThe 2011 Cask Ale Week saw the introduction of the ‘Try Before You Buy’ theme, utilising 1/3 pint glasses to allow customers to try small amounts of different Cask Ales before purchasing. Try Before You Buy is a fantastic way to recruit new drinkers and is a great opportunity for bar staff to engage customers about cask ales and generate interest throughout your outlet.
• Beer Festival. A beer festival is a guaranteed way to pull in the crowds. Make sure you offer ‘try before you buy’ on available ales.• Ladies Night. A great way to break the gender divide when it comes to cask ales. Offer promotions for the ladies to help banish the idea that cask ales are just for men.• Beer and Food Pairing. Create a special menu recommending meals to go with the beers you are selling.• Offer 3 x 1/3 Pints for the price of a pint! This remains a popular trend and encourages customers to be adventurous!• Quiz nights are always popular; test your customers’ knowledge with some fun beer trivia.• Prize draw! The Daily Telegraph is also encouraging readers to visit local breweries – contact breweries in your area to arrange a brewery tour prize for a lucky customer!
• Meet the brewer. A great way to generate local interest about regional cask ales.• Create awareness by offering facts on beer flavours and about the products and breweries.• Make use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter to promote your events.• Don’t forget to advertise your promotions and events on chalkboards around your outlet.• Useful links are www.caskaleweek.co.uk and www.camra.org.uk/caskaleweek• For more information call 01206 752212
