Warner faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends attended the February Annual Black TieSocial, sponsored by the local chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society incounseling. Proceeds from a raffle were donated to support the Rochester InternationalAcademy and Mount Hope Family Center.

In this short video, we hear fromMartha Mock, who directs the Center on Disability and Education at the WarnerSchool, and other college faculty, staff, and students across the country about the wayscollege affects the lives of people with intellectual disabilities when they have theopportunity to pursue their dreams of college. Based at the Institute for CommunityInclusion at UMass Boston, but active nationwide, Think College is dedicated todeveloping, expanding, and improving inclusive higher education options for peoplewith intellectual disabilities, through building the expectations of students withintellectual disabilities and their parents, while also working with colleges anduniversities to ensure their doors are open to them.

University's Tenth Annual Diversity Conference is April 8The University of Rochester’s Tenth Annual Diversity Conference will take place onMonday, April 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year the conference theme is Finding theCourage to Lead and features keynote speaker Samina Ali- an award-winning author,activist and cultural commentator. She will speak toward courage and how we can allshare in making the change we want to see. The conference encompasses 18 differentworkshops, presented by students, staff, and faculty representing every school at theUniversity with opportunities for MyPath, CME and Medallion credit for selectworkshops. There is still time to submit poster proposals relating to the theme- deadlinefor these proposals is Friday, March 8. Registration is open now. Please direct questionsto [email protected].

Lammers Gives Plenary Address; Gong, Altalouli, and Han Present atLinguistics ConferenceJayne Lammers, associate professor, master's student Yunfan Gong, and doctoral studentsMahmoud Altalouli and Yu Jung Han presented at the 40th Annual Applied Linguistics WinterConference in Binghamton in February. Lammers gave the plenary address "Why DigitalMatters: Considering the Authentic Language Learning Opportunities in Online Spaces," whereshe highlighted examples of the engaging digital Literacy practices and asked second/foreignlanguage teachers to consider tapping into the authentic language learning available in onlinespaces. Gong presented "Native Speaker Fallacy: An Investigation of NES and NNESTeachers in EFL Contexts." Altalouli presented "Graduate Reading in English as an AdditionLanguage." Han presented "Popular Game Character Analysis for ELLs’Transcultural/Transmedia Literacy Development."
Marrero Accepts Administrative PositionOrlando Marrero '06W (MS), '15W (EdD), adjunct professor, has accepted the position asassistant principal at Greece Odyssey Academy in the Greece Central School District. Hepreviously served as a science teacher leader for the UR-East Educational PartnershipOrganization (EPO).
Finnigan Chairs U.S. Department of Education and Louisiana Board ofRegents Panels; Gives Book TalkKara Finnigan, professor, served as chair of the U.S. Department of Education Institute ofEducation Sciences (IES) Education Systems and Broad Reform Panel as it reviewed proposalsin February. She also chaired the Social Sciences Review Panel for the Louisiana State Boardof Regents Research Competitiveness Subprogram, which seeks to strengthen the fundamentalresearch base and competitiveness of Louisiana’s public and private universities.
Additionally, Finnigan gave a book talk about her research and recent book, Striving inCommon: A Regional Equity Framework for Urban Schools (Harvard University Press, 2018) tothe National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Education Finance Fellows Meeting inSeattle, Wash. in March. The Education Finance Fellowship is sponsored by NCSL inpartnership with Learning Policy Institute, and involves legislators and legislative staff fromeleven states to promote the exchange of ideas and solutions related to school fundinginequities, opportunity gaps, and other related issues.
Helfer, Maier, and Ecker Present at School Counselors' ConsortiumMaster's students Vicki Helfer, Susan Maier, and Kimberly Ecker presented at the 28th AnnualRenewal & Reflection Conference sponsored by the Western New York School Counselors’Consortium in Rochester in February. All three students won poster awards and receivedcertificates and monetary awards. Helfer presented "Using Circles as an Anti-RacistCurriculum." Maier presented "Building Mental Health Wellness & Resiliency in Middle SchoolStudents Through Peace Circles." Ecker presented "Children With Chronic Illness: What AreTheir Educational Rights?"
Mock and Love Publish ArticleMartha Mock, professor and director of the Center on Disability and Education, and KristenLove '13W (PhD) published the article "Participatory Action Research and Student Perspectivesin a Rural Postsecondary Education Program" in Rural Special Education Quarterly, vol. 3,issue 1. In the article, the authors provide perspectives from students with intellectualdisabilities from a postsecondary education program situated on a college campus in a ruraltown. Learn more.
K-12 Digital Conversion Consortium Holds Kick-Off Workshop On February 26, the K-12 Digital Conversion Consortium held a "Kick-Off Workshop" forteams from school districts that are considering joining the consortium. The K-12 DigitalConversion Consortium is a partnership between the Warner School and selected BOCES andschool districts in the region that are engaging in district-wide transformations leveragingtechnology. Given its current early stage, the consortium is being "incubated" within the Centerfor Learning in the Digital Age. More than 80 school leaders, teachers, and technologydirectors from across 20 K-12 school districts attended the workshop. Raffaella Borasi,Frederica Warner Professor and director of the Center for Learning in the Digital Age, andDave Miller, associate professor, were among the facilitators of this event, supported bydoctoral students Yu Jung Han and Linh Dang.
ENGOAL Members Present at Grand RoundsCraig Sellers, professor of clinical nursing and medicine/geriatrics and aging at the School ofNursing; Joyce Duckles, associate professor; Silvia Sörensen, associate professor; andSandhya Seshadri, assistant professor of clinical nursing at the School of Nursing, presented atthe Finger Lakes Geriatrics Grand Rounds at Monroe Community Hospital on the projectEngaging Older Adult Learners as Health Researchers (ENGOAL) in February. ProjectENGOAL is a collaborative community project designed to develop patient partners to helpshape current and future geriatric research, as well as clinical services.
