New JARC Website Brings Accolades

With such positive feedback like, “Wow, it looks great!!!” and, “Amazing! Well done,” we feel justified in bragging about the debut of JARC’s newly re-designed website. The site introduces a fresh look, eye-catching colors, easier navigation, more photos and stories, and new features such as “one-stop” shopping and a JARC store. Visitors to the site can keep current on JARC news and events, as well as sign up to volunteer and purchase tickets to SpringElation and the Fall Fundraiser.

Special thanks to the Marvin and Betty Danto Family Foundation whose generosity helped to fund the re-design. Also, our gratitude goes out to the great folks at M10 Marketing, Board members Stephanie Freedman and Scott Werner, and Carl Winans, for their amazing job interpreting our needs and the beautiful design. We are proud of our new presence on the worldwide web!

We want to know what you think! Go to www.jarc.org/contact and share your thoughts.

Purim Ball

Despite the wintery weather, nearly 100 guests enjoyed themselves at JARC’s Purim Ball held at Congregation Beth Shalom on February 26th. The crowd danced to the beat of a talented DJ from Joe Cornell Entertainment, ate lots of Hamentaschen and twirled their groggers and celebrated the holiday with friends and volunteers. The Purim Ball is underwritten by the Irene Elkus Good Times Fund.

Super Bowl Party Scores BIG!

Every year, Andy Collins hosts a super-sized get-together to watch football’s biggest game. This year, the party was taken to a new level when Andy and his brother,

Dan, decided to hold the event at Champps Americana Bar and Grill in West Bloomfield.

With the generous support of friends, and a huge discount from Champps, 65 JARC football fans enjoyed delicious food and beverages while watching the gridiron action from the “best seats outside the stadium.” Andy and Dan were also joined by their sister, Board member Margo Collins, and Dan’s wife Veronica and their two young daughters.

Says Dan, “This was the 10th year of Andy hosting a Super Bowl party. It’s exciting that the event has grown larger each year and that everyone at JARC looks forward to the party. What could better demonstrate being part of the community than spending Super Bowl Sunday with friends!”

JARC provides a caring, loving home and opportunities for people with disabilities to be part of the community. And it helps their families be assured that their family member will be well taken care of. JARC is also very close to my heart as I have a brother with developmental disabilities who lives in another state. — Eugene and Reinart Gelzayd

We grew up with dear family friends of our parents who had a son with significant disabilities. When JARC was formed in 1969 our friend was very involved and that’s how my parents became involved. It’s a blessing for us to be able to support JARC and help it be everything it can be.

— Gail Danto, Trustee of the Marvin and Betty Danto Family Foundation

Exciting Update from the CEO Rick Loewenstein

Everyone JARC serves, and quite honestly, all of us, have changing needs throughout our lives. We all need love, safety, family; we all have social, physical, medical, spiritual, even dietary and transportation needs. And JARC is there … For A Lifetime.

So, in an effort to meet their ever-changing needs, we embarked on an ambitious strategic plan last year that has guided us in our decision making every day. Part of our plan called for us to launch a major fundraising campaign, JARC … For A Lifetime, to raise $20 million to secure JARC’s current and future financial needs.

I am thrilled to announce that as of today, the Campaign has secured over $16 million in commitments from over 40 donors.

This transformational Campaign will allow us to use technology to streamline our organization while creating operational efficiency that better meets the needs of the people we serve. It will enable JARC to form strategic alliances with other organizations which will also increase efficiency and reduce operating costs. And, the Campaign will allow us to expand on those services we do extremely well, and explore new services to meet the future needs of the people we serve.

Forty-three years ago, JARC’s founders dreamed big, and today it’s our turn to dream big. JARC’s vision, agility and extraordinary service delivery sets us apart from others in the field, and we must continue to be there for our community.

Thanks to our very caring and generous supporters, our present and future are looking bright.

House Beautification Committee Helps JARC Homes Shine

JARC’s House Beautification Committee was formed years ago by Joanne Aronovitz to help each house feel like a “home”. Serving on the current Committee are Sharon Alterman, Jennifer Fishman, Suzanne Lipshaw, Ellen Labes, Sue Rontal, Pat Shink, Cathy Topf and Mary Topf. These dedicated volunteers work with JARC staff to ensure all the furniture, accessories, artwork, linens, kitchen needs and more are up to date and work for the people

JARC serves.

Committee members check on their assigned homes a few times throughout the year to make sure all the decorating needs are met. They are given a budget to work with, and never fail to

accomplish their goals with money to spare. Speaking from the heart, Sharon Alterman adds, “We are very committed to have the most homelike and comfortable environment for the people we serve. We want every home to be welcoming to guests and be a home that any of us would enjoy living in.”

To make a tribute or monetary contribution to the House Beautification Fund, call 248-538-6611 or go online to www.jarc.org.

Oakland University Beaumont Medical School Students Gain New Perspective

Sixty second-year medical school students from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine are taking part in an innovative partnership with JARC designed to bring awareness to issues facing people with disabilities within the medical community.

Dr. Ernest F. Krug, professor and head of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at the medical school, felt the collaboration would be beneficial in understanding how disabilities, such as deafness, autism or disruptive behaviors, can impact doctor-patient interaction.

The four-month program divides the students into groups, each spending an afternoon at JARC. Students play out scenarios that might occur when treating a patient with a disability or interacting with their families. This is followed by open discussions with JARC staff, including Chris Hench, Joyce Holmes, Laurel Berger, Melissa Stewart, Chaya Leah Tinman and Melissa Garrett. Every session incorporates a presentation on the principles of Gentle Teaching.

According to JARC Chief Operating Officer Chris Hench, “This program brings a new perspective to future doctors helping them effectively relate to people with disabilities as individuals with the need to feel safe, comfortable and cared about, especially in unfamiliar settings. It will not only make them better doctors, it will mean a better quality of care for their patients.”

Students also visit either the Nusbaum or Greenberg/Shiffman/Stein Home where they meet the people JARC serves as well as get further insights from home staff. When the program concludes in April, students will have gained valuable knowledge in meeting the unique needs of people with disabilities.

Volunteer at JARC & Make a Difference!

Just before Tu b’Shevat, the Girls’ Club of the local Aish Ha’Torah in Huntington Woods, invited JARC’s

Volunteer Coordinator Melissa Garrett to give a presentation on disability awareness and talk about the work JARC does in the community to help people with developmental disabilities.

Afterwards, the girls (grades 5-9) crafted 10 beautiful flower centerpieces out of foam and wire

and donated them to JARC homes.

January 27th marked the 18th Annual Yvonne Vandenberg Memorial “Heart To Heart” project to pack Valentine’s Day gift bags for ill and needy children.

Over 50 volunteers, including a dedicated group from Korotkin Insurance Group, assembled more than 800 goody bags that were distributed to Beaumont Children’s Hospital, Lighthouse of Oakland Country, Orchards Children’s Services and Nienas School in Detroit.

LIGHTING SUPPLY COMPANY SHINES!Eugene Sherizen founded Lighting Supply in 1983 as a small “light bulb” business selling to contractors in Metro Detroit. Today, Eugene’s dedication to customer service remains the driving force behind Lighting Supply’s success. The company now employs over 60 people and services thousands of customers nationally, from a 60,000 square foot distribution facility in Michigan. For nearly 20 years, Eugene has been answering all JARC’s lighting needs.

Recently when DTE offered a special Lighting Retrofit Incentive to its commercial customers, providing funding to upgrade and install high-efficiency lighting, Eugene and his staff evaluated the lighting needs of the JARC office and donated 250 high-efficiency fixtures.

According to JARC Property Manager, Mike Cottle, “The DTE grant covered only the labor to install the

new lighting but it was Eugene Sherizen who donated all the supplies. With the energy savings, the total project will pay for itself within 1-1/2 years.

Adds Eugene Sherizen, “I appreciate what JARC does for our community. Energy efficiency is important for all non-profits; they need to be prudent with the community’s funds and have a responsibility to see that as much as possible goes to provide its core services.”
