Tanzania ship sinks, nearly200 bodies recovered
STONE TOWN, (Tanzania) 11 Sept—Passengers on the aging, crowded boatheaded for one of Tanzania’s top tourist destinations said they realized somethingwas wrong when the overnight ferry began to list from side to side.
Then water rushed through and killed the engines, sending the MV SpiceIslanders upside down and pitching hundreds of people into the deep sea earlySaturday morning. A witness counted nearly 200 bodies, and the president of thenearby island of Zanzibar said more than 570 people were rescued, suggesting theboat was overloaded. Some survivors said the boat’s capacity was about 600.
Those lucky enough to find something to cling to floated in the dark watersfor at least three hours until the strong currents began to wash them up on the whitesandy shores of Zanzibar. As the sun rose, news of the tragedy had already spreadthroughout the community and thousands of people were on the beach, desperatelyhoping their family members would be the next to emerge from the waves. Oneman — too upset to give his name — screamed over and over again the namesof 25 missing family members, including his sisters, wife and grandsons.

KABUL, 11 Sept—Nearly 80 American soldierswere wounded and five Afghans civilians werekilled in a Taleban truck bombing targeting anAmerican base in eastern Afghanistan, NATO saidSunday, a stark reminder that the war in Afghanistanstill rages 10 years after the 11 Sept terror attacksagainst the United States.
No US soldiers were killed in Saturday night’sbombing, which took place hours after the Talebanvowed to keep fighting US forces in Afghanistanuntil all American troops leave the country. Theinsurgent movement also stressed that it had no rolein the 11 Sept attacks.
The blast shaved the facades from shops outsideCombat Outpost Sayed Abad in Wardak provinceand broke windows in government offices nearby, said Roshana Wardak, a former parliamentarian
who runs a clinic in the nearby town of the samename. The Taleban claimed responsibility for theattack.
Eight wounded civilians were brought toWardak’s clinic, two of them with wounds seriousenough that they were sent to Kabul. She said one3-year-old girl died of her wounds on the way to theclinic.
The Wardak governor’s office confirmed thedeath toll and said a total of 17 Afghans werewounded — 14 civilians and three security officers.
The attack was carried out by a Taleban suicidebomber who detonated a large bomb inside a truckcarrying firewood, NATO said. It was unclear howmany foreign and Afghan soldiers were serving onthe base.

How schoolathletes can
prevent‘superbug’
DALLAS, 11 Sept— US school athletes can lowertheir risk of staph infections and methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus by using good personalhygiene, a physician says.
Dr Robert Dimeff, director of family sportsmedicine at the University of Texas SouthwesternMedical Centre in Dallas, says studies by the Texasdepartment of health found the staph infection rateamong football players in Texas was 16 times thenational average.
Dimeff says football players and wrestlers shouldbe particularly careful to watch out for signs ofinfections, including reddening of the skin, swellingor pus around sores, abrasions or cuts. The soresmay be mistaken for spider or bug bites as well,Dimeff warns.
“Have your athlete check in the mirror for anyunusual red spots or lesions, particularly those thatdon’t seem to be healing, and don’t be afraid to alertthe coaches to any issues so it doesn’t spread toothers,” Dimeff says in a statement.
If the skin is injured, wash the wound immediatelywith soap and warm water, then dry off the woundand ensure it is properly bandaged, the doctor says.
To help prevent the potential for infection:— Keep hands clean by washing thoroughly
with soap and water or anti-bacterial hand sanitizer.— Avoid sharing towels, deodorant, razors or
other items that touch bare skin.— Put a clean towel on the bench when weight

A more permeable gut enablesbacteria and new substances to pass more easilythrough its lining into the bloodstream. Thesesubstances then trigger the baby’s immune responseand the production of antibodies, Boudry says.

Hummingbirds allHummingbirds all‘a-flutter’ in mating
NEW HAVEN, 11 Sept—Males of somehummingbird species create loud sounds duringmating displays by using their tail feathers as they“dive-bomb” past females, US researchers say.
Scientists at Yale University discovered malesproduce the loud sounds as the air flows past thetail feathers in the dive, causing them to flutter, aNational Science Foundation release saidThursday.
When the courting male bird reaches the lowestpoint of his dive, which can begin anywhere from
5 to 40 yards above a perched female, he rapidlyspreads and then closes his tail feathers, causingthem to flutter and generate sound.
Yale researcher Christopher Clark says malesof different hummingbird species all have theirown signature sound. The size, shape, mass andstiffness of the hummingbird’s feathers create thetone of each species’ particular sound, he said.
“The sounds that hummingbird feathers canmake are more varied than I expected,” Clarksaid.—Internet
US scientists claim tobe capable ofpredicting climate 16months forward
LOS ANGELES, 11 Sept—Scientists at theUniversity of California Los Angeles campus haveannounced that they have successfully used newprediction algorithms to forecast climate up to 16months in advance.
Professor Michael Ghil said in a UCLA newsrelease Friday his team used new predictionalgorithms based on matching ocean temperaturerecords with new theories on how long-term climatetrends are influenced by short-term weatherextremes.
Ghil, a distinguished professor of climatedynamics in the UCLA Department of Atmosphericand Oceanic Sciences and senior author of theresearch, said the new prediction formulas will giveclimate experts and governments clues about long-term swings in the El Nino/La Nina oscillation inthe Pacific Ocean, which drastically affects weatherin the Americas, Asia and Australia.
The new forecasting tool uses sea temperaturesand has been tested on decades of historical data. The forecasts were then cross-checked againstactual climate trends.
The UCLA team also said that their 16-monthforecasts were more accurate than previous forecaststhat went only 8 months forward.
The study is currently available online in thejournal Proceedings of the National Academy ofSciences (PNAS) and will be published in anupcoming print edition of the journal.

New App letssmartphones use data
without data plansNEW YORK,11 Sept—What’s the worst part of having a smartphone? The
data plans. The original iPhone cost something like $69 a month at minimumto pay for the mandatory voice minutes, texting and data plans, and thingshaven’t improved a whole lot since. Sure, if you’re on prepaid you might be ableto just pay for data. AT&T’s GoPhone prepaid service offers a la carte pricing, and that’s how I got my $15 a month Android data plan (which turned out to bemore like $33 a month since I ended up needing more data and actual voiceminutes).
To use just a data plan, though, I ended up relying on apps like Google Voiceto use SMS messaging, and GrooveIP to make (staticky) phone calls. I thoughtthat would work for me, since I rarely needed to make phone calls anyway andcould live with a bit of static. But what if I needed voice minutes and texting, and only occasionally used data?
Smozzy is an app that lets you browse the Web on your Android phone, using just SMS messaging. Cameron Summerson of the Android Police blog hasa write-up on how it works: It’s basically its own Web browser that texts theSmozzy servers with what website you want to go to and gets back texts that itdeciphers into a webpage. So it’s sorta like Opera Mini, for those with unlimitedtexting and no data plan.—Internet

BRISTOL, 11 Sept— Scientists have shownthat the Earth’s surfacebecame enriched with pre-cious metals by impact-ing meteorites. TheEarth’s crust and mantlehas considerably moregold than expected fromfavoured models of plan-etary formation.
A study from the Uni-versity of Bristol lookedat some of the oldest rockson Earth, demonstratingthat gold was deliveredby meteorites long after
their formation. Theirresults are published inNature.
While the Earth wasforming, iron sank to thecentre of the planet, form-ing the core. Any preciousmetals in the planetary mixwould have gone with thisiron and concentrated inthe core, leaving the man-tle devoid of elementssuch as gold, platinum, and osmium. But this isnot what we observe. Infact, the silicate mantlehas up to 1,000 times more
gold than anticipated.Several reasons for this
enrichment were pro-posed in the past, including delivery bymeteorites, although untilnow it has not beenpossible to prove. Bymeasuring isotopes inrocks that are nearly fourbillion years old fromGreenland, the team hasmanaged to date the golddelivery, and to relate it toan event known as the“terminal bombardment”.

New target toprevent drug-induced liver

WASHINGTON, 11 Sept—US scientists haveidentified a key protein that could protect againstdrug-induced liver disease and acute liver failure.
Acetaminophen, more commonly known asTylenol, helps relieve pain and reduce fever. Theover-the-counter drug is a major ingredient inmany cold and flu remedies as well as prescriptionpainkillers like Percocet and Vicodin.
Doctors at the Keck School of Medicine of USChave identified a protein ‘Sab’ on the mitochondriaof liver cells in mice that, when silenced, protectsagainst liver toxicity usually associated with excessdoses of acetaminophen.
Researchers have long believed thatacetaminophen was converted into toxic metabolitesthat, in excess, overwhelm liver cells, causing themto die. In the current study, the scientists silencedSab in mice, which did not affect the metabolism ofacetaminophen but successfully prevented liverinjury. They also tested the effect on liver injurycaused by apoptosis — silencing Sab protected theliver in that case, too. The study has been publishedin the Journal of Biological Chemistry.—Internet

SINGAPORE, 11 Sept—Singapore had 221 con-firmed HIV (Human im-munodeficiency virus)cases diagnosed in the firsthalf of 2011, a senior offi-cial of the Health Ministrysaid. Minister of State forHealth Amy Khor saidSaturday evening that thenumber is comparable to214 confirmed cases in thefirst half 2010, local dailyLianhe Zaobao reported onSunday.
“The possible reasonsfor this could be lack ofknowledge and inaccurateperception of their indi-vidual risk. There are alsoindividuals who know theyhave high risks for HIV butare reluctant to go for HIVtesting,” she said. This isbecause having an HIV testand finding out that one ispositive opens the door tomany issues — a keychallenge of which iscoping with the stigma and
discrimination which oftenaccompany the disease.
Khor called for efforts toreduce HIV-related stigmaand discrimination. “Societymust play a bigger part inbreaking down the barriersto HIV testing. People withHIV have lost their jobs andthe much- needed social sup-port as a result of theirdiagnosis. Such occurrencesshould not happen,” shesaid. — Xinhua

Norwich City 0-1 West BromPeter Odemwingie scores & misses penalty as
Baggies claim first Premier League win of the season
LONDON, 11 Sept—West Brom secured theirfirst three points in the Premier League this sea-son with a 1-0 away win over Norwich City.
Peter Odemwingie scored the only goal ofthe game after a defensive mix-up, while he alsohad a second-half penalty saved.
The Baggies got off to the perfect start whenjust three minutes in a hopeful ball into theNorwich area caused problems for the hosts’defence. Ritchie de Laet’s headed backpassto debutant goalkeeper Declan Rudd wastoo short, allowing Odemwingie to steal into put his side ahead with his first goal ofthe season.
Norwich almost hit back immediately whenAndr-ew Surman found Chris Martin in space in the
West Brom area. Martin drilled the ball across the boxand his delivery was met by Ben Foster, but with
almost an empty goal facing Grant Holt, the strikerfailed to find the target from just a few yards out.
Both sides were playing with thekind of confidence that
suggested their current league positionswere false. West Brom were looking
dangerous on the break whilst Norwichpassed the ball around with real purpose.
Norwich were taking more control of the gameand tested Foster for the first time in the 33rd
minute through Elliot Bennett. The winger, who joinedfrom Brighton in the summer, cut inside from the left before firing goalwardsfrom 20 yards, only to see his effort palmed away by Foster.—Internet
