Atoms—the particles that make up all matter—vary by element in different types of matter.
There are more than 100 known elements, specific types of atoms that are the basic building blocks of matter. Pure elements are substances that are made of only one type of atom. However, atoms can join together to form molecules. If two or more atoms of different elements join together, the resulting molecule is called a compound. For example, water is a common example of a compound—water molecules are each composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. – Teacher’s Domain
