Notes for James Newton CAMPBELL and Mary Elizabeth WHITLOCK
Marriage note: Loudon Co., TN. was formed in 1870 from parts of Blount, Monroe,Roane, and McMinn Counties. The courthouse was built in 1872.
W D Leburnett, M. G. officiated at the marriage according to the Marriage Return.NOTE: Was the minister related to James Newton's mother, Della Burnett? Thedifference in spelling indicates that at least one branch, or one member of thefamily dropped the "Le".
Marriage source: Loudon Co., Tn marriage vol. 1, p22, entry no. 135.
HUSBAND - James Newton CAMPBELL
Individual note: James Newton was the 6th child of 8 siblings and 3 halfsiblings.
James Newton has been given other middle initials over his lifetime: "W", "A". Hewas always James Newton and he died James Newton Campbell.
The 1880 Census of Roane Co. lists James N, age 28, Mary E., Age 28, Charlie E. age7, and Callie B, age 1/12 mos (1 month).
The 1891 Enumeration of Roane Co, Tn of the age of 21 and above did not list anyCampbells. Why have I not reviewed the 1890 Census of Roane?
The 1900 Census of Roane Co., TN. does not list James and his family, but they arelisted in the 1900 Census of Williamson Co., IL: James, his wife, Mary, and Charlesare listed, but not Callie. The family was living in Grassy Precinct. James waslisted incorrectly as James "A". Both he and his wife reported that they were bornin TN. and that their parents were also born in TN.
In the 1910 Census of Williamson Co., IL. James Newton is listed with his wife asliving at 305 W. Boulevard, Marion, IL. James was listed as a coal miner. He andhis wife again reported that both they and their parents were born in TN.
Callie, if she were alive at that time, would have been about 20 years old. Theresearcher in TN was not able to find Callie listed in 1900. She must have diedat a very early age.
Born note: Censuses of Roane Co., TN for 1860, 1880, and Williamson Co., ILCensuses of 1900 and 1910.
Died note: James Newton died in a slate fall at Peabody No. 3 coal mine near thevillage of Cedar Grove, IL. The coal mine is long-gone. He was the only person inthat room of the mine at the time of the fall.
Buried note: James is buried in the Campbell family plotMarion, IL. In the same plot are his wife, Mary E., sondaughter-in-law, "Vada", and, grandson, Lawrence James.spaces in this plot.
in MapleWood Cemetary,Charles E.,There are three empty
Individual source: The 1860 Census of Roane Co" TN. listed James as "James W.",an error, and "as age "7" which would give a birthyear of 1853 if James was born inJanuary. The 1860 Census listed the Campbell household as No. 930-859. Includedbesides James are his father, age 45, his mother, "Dortha B", age 42, Lucinda J.age 16, Amanda C. age 13, Columbus A., age 9, Jno. T., age 4, and Stacy B., age6/12 mos.
Died source: James obituary in the "Marion Daily Republican" dated May 28, 1918,and THE COAL REPORT, ILLINOIS, 1918 lists his death in Table 21, page 89. The COALREPORT shows the death date incorrectly as "June" 28.
During the time that my parents and their parents were alive no one ever mentionedhow James Newton died.
James' obituary read, in part: "Mr. Campbell ...was a man of sterling worth andfine character, and was counted as one of Marion's best citizens and his untimelydeath comes as a great shock to everyone. He was a consistent member of the First
-Baptist Church and member of the U.M.W.A., n
WIFE - Mary Elizabeth WHITLOCKIndividual note: Following the death of her husband, great grandmother Whitlockalways wore black until she died 20 years later. She smoked a pipe and hid it ontop of a tall chest. (Tall to an under eight year old boy.)
Individual source: The 1860 Census of Roane Co., TN.
The Whitlock household was No. 950-878 in the Roane Co. Census.
CHILD 1 - Charles E. CAMPBELL
Individual note: Charles E. Campbell listed himself as a farmer on hisapplication for marriage in in Williamson Co., IL. He later worked as a coal minerat Peabody No.3, which was located about 3 miles north of Marion, in an area nowknown as Cedar Grove. Peabody No. 3 has been gone many years now. My dad, and mygreat grandfather, James Newton Campbell, and grandpa' all worked at that mine.
Later Grandpa' worked as the custodian of the McKinley School on N. Court st. Theschool was so severly damaged during an earthquake (1968, I believe) that it had tobe demolished.
I never learned what the "E." meant in grandpa's name.
He always kept a large vegetable garden in the back of his yard, together with agrape arbor which grew over a bench, a raspberry patch, and a cherry tree outsidethe kitchen window.
Early in my life there was a wood board walk from the back porch to a shed in theback yard. There was a water pump in the kitchen which grandma' used to pump waterfrom a cistern behind and below the back porch. Sometime before 1944 the pump wasreplaced by piped city water.
Grandpa bought the house at 808 N. Van Buren st. in Marion in 1898 and struggled topay for it all of his life. It was a two room house when he bought it. When hedied it was a three bedroom with living room, dining room, kitchen and bath.
As frugal as he was, and as hard as he tried, I don't think he ever owned it freeand clear. Virginia Campbell Langan and her husband, Leon, bought the house in1953 after grandpa' died, and owned it until about 1996, or so.
Grandpa' seemed to me to be a quiet man with not a whole lot to say. That may havebeen because I was so young when I would visit him. Perhaps he was more talkativewith adults. Norma Sue remembers that he usually had an odor of alcohol about him.How did I miss that?
I would ride the train from Johnston City to Marion (ticket cost 10 cents).Grandpa' would meet me at the station, and we would walk to his house, about aten-minute walk.
The 1910 Census of Williamson Co., 11 lists Charles E. as 34 years old. He wasborn in 1872 which means he was actually 38.
Born note: Loudon County, TN was formed from Roane, McMinn, Blount and MonroeCounties on 2 June 1870. Loudon was first given the name "Christiana", but waschanged to Loudon 7 July 1870.
Died note: Death Certificate. Cause of death was Uremia and GeneralizedArteriosclerosis.
Buried note: Gandfather Campbell is buried in the Campbell family plot inMaplewood Cemetary. His father, James Newton Campbell, his mother, ElizabethWhitlock, and his son, Lawrence James Campbell are all buried in the plot. Thereare two empty spaces left in the plot.
Born source: My grandfather Campbell stated on his marriage license that he was
-born in Loudon Co., TN. Early Censuses of Roane Co show that Roane was most likelyhis birthplace.
He listed himself as a farmer on the marriage license 1 Dec 1895. At that time, Ibelieve that he and his family lived in Grassy Township, Williamson Co., IL.
CHILD 2 - Callie B. CAMPBEL~
Died note: Callie was listed in the 1880 Census of Roane Co., TN as 1/12 of age(1 month). She was not listed in the 1900 Census of Roane Co. and was not listed
in the 1900 Census of Williamson Co., IL with the rest of the Campbell family. Ofcourse, she could have married and moved elsewhere, but I believe she died at anearly age. Her name was never mentioned in dad's family to the best of my memory.
Notes for Andrew D. WHITLOCK and Martha A. (Polly) FARRIS
Marriage note: Married by Joseph Nicholson 4 July 1850. Bond is missing, butdate recorded for it is 25 June 1850.
HUSBAND - Andrew D. WHITLOCK
Individual note: Notes for Whitlock research. The 1850 Census of Roane Co., TNlists Elizabeth Whitlock family as h/h No 377. Also listed is John Whitlock, h/hNo 435. The 1860 Mortality Schedule lists Robert Whitlock, born SC, age 86, diedMarch (1860), widowed. The were no Whitlocks listed in the 1830 Census of RoaneCo.
Born source: 1850 Census, Roane Co., TN. See household no 377,Elizabeth Whitlockis shown as head of household. Andrew is listed as 21 years of age, born TN.During the 1880 Census of Johnson Co., IL. an "A.D. Whitlock was listed and shownas born in TN. Elizabeth Whitlock is listed in the 1840 Census, page 19
WIFE - Martha A. (Polly) FARRISIndividual note: In the 1830 Census of Tn I found Peter Faris , page 25A, andSamuel Faris, page 25A also. In the 1840 Census George Farris is listed on page 4.
CHILD 1 - Rebecca WHITLOCKBorn note: The Johnson Co., IL. Record Book, Vol. D, shows a marriage betweenRebecca Whitlock and .... Rebecca claimed A. D. Whitlock as her father, and RoaneCo., TN. as her birthplace. NOTE: through some mysterious manner I have lost thename of her husband.
CHILD 2 - Mary Elizabeth WHITLOCKIndividual note: Following the death of her husband, great grandmother Whitlockalways wore black until she died 20 years later. She smoked a pipe and hid it ontop of a tall chest. (Tall to an under eight year old boy.)
Individual source: The 1860 Census of Roane Co., TN.
The Whitlock household was No. 950-878 in the Roane Co. Census.
Notes for Elizabeth ??
Individual source: 1850 Census of Roane Co., TN. Elizabeth is listed at
household no. 377, probably as a widow since no husband is listed with her .. She islisted with son Preston, age 22, born in TN; Andrew, age 21, born in TN; Martha, age 19, born in TN; Margaret, age 14, born in TN; and, William, age 18, born in TN.
