Extreme Sleeps Adventures of a Wild Camper
Phoebe Smith
In a sometimes scary, frequently funny, and intriguing journey around the UK, Phoebe attempts to discover and
conquer its wildest places
I had become official infatuated with what I call "extreme sleeping"-a kind of addictive high-adrenaline sport-but
rather than being defined by pushing the boundaries of physical activity, my particular pursuit was marked by a
distinct lack of it.
Veteran globetrotter Phoebe Smith sets out to prove that outdoor adventures are available in the UK which rival
anything found elsewhere in the world. From spending the night in the decaying wreckage of a World War II
bomber at Bleaklow, to pitching next to the adrenaline-inducing sheer drops of Lizard Point, Phoebe's extreme
sleeps defy her perceptions of the great outdoors and teach her about herself along the way.
Summary
Phoebe Smith is the author of The Camper's Friend. She regularly writes for Country Walking, the Guardian,
Trail, and Wanderlust.

Grandma Gatewood's Walk The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail
Ben Montgomery
Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of
clothes and less than two hundred dollars. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-
old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. And in September 1955,
having survived a rattlesnake strike, two hurricanes, and a run-in with gangsters from Harlem, she stood atop
Maine's Mount Katahdin. There she sang the first verse of "America, the Beautiful" and proclaimed, "I said I'll do
it, and I've done it."
Grandma Gatewood, as the reporters called her, became the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail
alone, as well as the first person-man or woman-to walk it twice and three times. Gatewood became a hiking
celebrity and appeared on TV and in the pages of Sports Illustrated. The public attention she brought to the
little-known footpath was unprecedented. Her vocal criticism of the lousy, difficult stretches led to bolstered
maintenance, and very likely saved the trail from extinction.

Born in a Tent How Camping Makes Us Australian
Bill Garner
Examining Australia’s long and proud history of camping, this meditation follows the story from campfire to gas
bottle and from a tarp slung on saplings to polymer tents and aluminum poles, revealing as it does so the ways in
which camping connects individuals to the land, to the past, and to one another. Historian Bill Garner recalls that
Australia was first settled as a campsite, and that though the Europeans brought tents, they hardly invented the
concept of camping—the Aborigines had been camping for millennia prior. He examines how camping has helped
nurture some of the most widely held values in Australia: egalitarianism, tolerance, and the premium placed on
practicability. As it connects holiday camping to the whole story of Australian settlement and the ancient ways
of making a home on that remote continent, this beautifully written and illustrated book encourages readers to
examine their own histories of camping and observe how their family stories and the national story are entwined.
Summary
Bill Garner is an award-winning historian, screenwriter, and playwright, as well as an avid camper. His doctoral
dissertation on the history of camping in Australia won both the Dennis-Wettenhall Prize and the Australian
Historical Association’s Serle Award.

Product ImageHuman Planet Nature’s Greatest Human Stories
Dale Templar, Brian Leith, Timothy Allen
An extraordinary celebration of man-the ultimate animal.
Human Planet is the first natural history documentary series to turn the camera on ourselves, the human
species. Taking the same approach as Planet Earth, it will explain how human beings have learnt to live on every
habitat, from our origins in the jungle to our domination of grasslands to the desert, ocean, rivers, the creation
of our own environment, urban, and the challenges of the Arctic mountains.
But this is also a story about how we have learnt to adapt to the most inhospitable landscapes and work in
partnership with other animal species. From the Bajau sea gypsies to the Korowai tribe of West Papau who live in
treehouses, the honey birds in Kenya that lead the Masai people to honey, the men who fish with dolphins in
Brazil and the Papuan tribesmen who mimic the courtship dances of the birds of paradise, this is the remarkable
story of our relationship with nature.

over the past 20 years in the News and Current Affairs, Science and Documentary departments, on series such

humans and wildlife and has travelled to more than 50 countries in the process.

Wilderness Navigation Handbook Fred Touche
Designed for both land and water use, this comprehensive guide helps unlock the complexity of map and chart
reading as it relates to navigation. Beginning with detailed technical descriptions of the tools of navigation-a
compass, an altimeter, a GPS system, and a sextant-this handbook shows how to use these tools either
individually or in combination with each other to navigate any area. Factors that cause tools and techniques to
fail are discussed, such as why an altimeter often shows the wrong elevation, a GPS position is sometimes off
track, and the sun often points in an unexpected direction. Twenty-one real-life scenarios provide practical
wisdom for even the most intrepid navigator. Specific information on using the moon for directions and the stars
for position, measuring boiling water temperature for elevation, map projections, map datums, great circle routes,
and the UTM/UPS grid system is included.
Summary
Fred Touche is a technical writer and has been an avid hiker, skier, kayaker, and mountain climber for 37 years.

For the less organizationally inclined, the handbook supplies suggestions for activities to build character (or
not!), organize outings, improve home life, think about spirituality, support community, learn new skills or have
fun, inexpensively.
Amazon Girls Handbook is a humorous self-help book and a guide for enhancing life. While the focus is on
lesbians, everyone can benefit from its ideas...

Longbows and Archery Brian Williams
A powerful and iconic weapon, the longbow dominated Medieval warfare in England. From the Hundred Years War
to Hastings, Robin Hood and Agincourt, the longbow was also used to a devastating effect in naval battles. Kings
of England encouraged the use of the longbow by sponsoring tournaments with prizes for successful archers. All
other sports were banned on a Sunday except for archery. At any particular time, England would have a large
pool of experienced archers ready to be called up for war. Each English shire had to provide the king with a
certain number of trained archers per year-and this was enforced by law. But where did the longbow originate,
and why did it come to dominate archery in this way? The Pitkin Guide to Longbows and Archery explores these
questions, and looks at the ordinary men who used bows and arrows as soldiers and in their day-to-day lives.

Yearning Wild Exploring the Last Frontier and the Landscape of the Heart
R. Glendon Brunk
In 1968, Glendon Brunk moved to Alaska to pursue his childhood dream of living in the wilds of the last American
frontier. He built his own log cabin, hunted and fished, worked with the native Inuit, and became one of the
world's top sled-dog racers. But he also watched the land he loved being destroyed by the tools of the very
society he represented. Disgusted and distraught, Brunk left Alaska and hitchhiked across Africa, Asia, and North
America, where he witnessed continuing destruction from the hands of humans. He returned to Alaska,
committed to fight to save what is left of the wilderness. This personal story explores the deeply American
contradictions that make up modern Alaska and questions our cultural inability to both love and protect the land.
Summary
R. Glendon Brunk spent 30 years living and working in Alaska and is dedicated to protecting the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge. He teaches at Prescott College. He lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

Sporting Terriers Their Form, Their Function and Their Future
David Hancock
This book is about sporting terriers, that much-loved, quintessentially British, quite admirable group of dogs,
favored for centuries by the more humble type of hunter. Sporting Terriers is not a manual covering training,
grooming, nutrition, and dog care; it is a celebration of terriers' contribution to the sporting scene, an
examination of their form, their function, and their future, in an increasingly urban society. Painstakingly
researched and brimming with information, it covers the emergent terrier breeds and foreign ones, as well as the
long-established pedigree breeds of the show ring.
Summary
David Hancock is the author of eight previous books on dogs, and more than 750 articles published in national
and international magazines. In 2009 he won the annual award of the Dog Writers' Association of America, having
been a runner-up two years earlier. He judges emergent terrier breeds such as the Lucas, Sporting Lucas, and
Plummer Terriers as well as working gundog tests. David wrote the breed standards for several emergent breeds,
has advised television production companies on recent documentaries on dogs, and was a contributor to the
Bateson Report, an inquiry into pedigree dog breeding in the UK.

From the Deer to the Fox The Hunting Transition and the Landscape, 1600-1850
Mandy de Belin
Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the sport of hunting was transformed: the principal prey changed from
deer to fox, and the methods of pursuit were revolutionized. Questioning the traditional explanation of the
hunting transition-namely that change in the landscape led to a decline of the deer population-this book explores
the terrain of Northamptonshire during that time period and seeks alternative justifications. Arguing that the
many changes that hunting underwent in England were directly related to the transformation of the hunting
horse, this in-depth account demonstrates how the near-thoroughbred horse became the mount of choice for
those who hunted in the shires. This book shows how, quite literally, the thrill of the chase drove the hunting
transition.

It's time for Littlenose to learn a little responsibility-so he goes hunting with the adults and is told to build the
