What is SMART Recovery?
• Abstinence oriented recovery organisation, based on peer led mutual aid
• Uses tools from REBT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing and Stages of Change
• Secular, science based mutual aid option
• Evolved from partnership between people in recovery and addictions psychologists
What is SMART Recovery?
SMART Recovery is a skills-based, self-help programme for individuals struggling with dependencies of all kinds. An alternative to 12-step models such as Alcoholics Anonymous, SMART Recovery uses well-established techniques from modern psychology to equip people with practical skills and tools to overcome their addiction.
SMART Recovery for Family & Friends
• Developed in the US - adapted from SMART Recovery and CRAFT (Dr. Robert J. Meyers “Get Your Loved One Sober”)
• First F&F online meetings in 2010 on US site
• 2013 F&F manuals anglicised for the UK
• November 2013 started F&F online meeting in UK
• 2014 Created online F&F training • Pilot Scheme commenced July 2014

The SMART Recovery goal for Family & Friends is for you to achieve a healthy, positive and balanced lifestyle while supporting your Loved One (LO) in a meaningful and truly helpful way. Our approach:• Teaches self-empowerment and self-
reliance.• Encourages individuals to change
unhelpful habits and live satisfying lives.
• Teaches tools and techniques for self-directed change.
What is CRAFT?
CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) is an evidence-based programme designed to teach family and friends new ways of interacting with a person who has an addiction with a goal of increasing the chances that the person will seek recovery.
