The Department of Family Medicine sponsored the 2012 ALSO Course on Friday, January 20th and Saturday, January 21st, 2012. Since 2003, the DFM at UIC has coordinated the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics course, designed to teach obstetrics pro-viders how to handle obstetric emergencies and keep them up-to-date on evidence-based practice recommendations. The ALSO course instructors are comprised of a consortium of Chicago-area family medicine residency faculty: UIC, Illinois Masonic, Hinsdale, Resur-rection, and Cook County-Loyola-Provident are all represented. ALSO is a structured, evidence-based, multidisciplinary training pro-gram on the practical management of obstetric emergencies. The two-day course is for maternity care providers including physicians, midwives, nurses and other clinicians.

On September 21, 2011 physician leaders gathered at Rush
Medical Center for an event releasing an updated Physi-
cians’ Breastfeeding Statement that combined the work of
IAFP with the Illinois chapters of the American Academy
of Pediatrics and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecol-
ogy. Illinois currently ranks 31st in breastfeeding rates. The Illinois Academy of
Family Physicians Task Force members volunteered to review and help shape
this important physician statement are:

Illinois member to serve in this position. Illinois Chapter Resolutions: IAFP was represented by delegates Drs. Orgain, Tem-poral, Brull and Miller. The Illinois chapter submitted or co-sponsored three resolutions considered by Con-gress: Resolution 201, 305, and 507.

Christopher Guer-rero, MD (left), IAFP’s 2010 Family Medicine Teacher of the Year for vol-unteer faculty, re-ceived the AAFP Humanitarian Award. He was honored for his
humanitarian efforts in his native Philippines. His volun-teer duties include teaching at a nursing school in the Philippines. He also leads medical missions to his home-land community of Nueva Vizcaya in the Philippines. He was also featured in the Elmwood Park Times, the local edition of the Sun Times Media Group.
