SUGGESTIONS

ThesesuggestionswerecreatedtohelpparentsbettercommunicatetheBiblicaltruthsdiscussedintheFamilyWorshipGuide.Theseactivitiesandquestionscanreplaceorserveasasupplementtothequestionsunderthe‘Read’sectiononPage 1. Remember, these suggestions are intended to help parents facilitate God‐centered discussions with theirchildren. Parents should prayerfully use these suggestions, and any other means necessary, to help their childrendiscoverthetruthsofGod’sWordandworshipHimtogether.

Preschool(Birth‐Kindergarten)o Beforeyoubegin,gatherthefollowingingredientstomakeplaydough:

o 1cupflouro 1cupwarmwatero 2teaspoonscreamoftartar

o 1teaspoonoilo 1/4cupsalto foodcoloring(ifdesired)

o Letyourchildrenhelpmeasuretheingredientsandaddthemtoamediumsaucepan.Mixallingredientstogether,addingafewdropsoffoodcoloringlast.Stirovermediumheatuntilsmooth.Removefrompanandkneaduntilblended.Placeinplasticbagorairtightcontainerwhencooled.

o Talktoyourchildrenaboutwhatyoumade.Askthemiftheyknewhowtomakeplaydoughbeforetheysawtherecipe.Whatmighthavehappenediftheytriedtomakeplaydoughwithoutarecipe?Couldtheyhavemadeitwithouthelpfromyou?Explainthattherecipeisasetofinstructionsthattellsyouhowtomakeplaydough.Youneedtheinstructionstoknowwhattodo,andmoreimportantly,youneedtofollowtheinstructionscorrectlysotheplaydoughwillturnoutright.Parentshelpyoureadandcarryouttheinstructions.

o Askyourchildrentodescribetheplaydough.Talkwiththemabouthowyoucanmolditintodifferentshapestofitthepurposeyouhaveforit.Takesometimetocreatedifferentshapesandtalkabouthowyouwouldusethem.Showyourchildrenthatwearelikeplaydough.GodwantsustoliveinawaythatpleasesHimandfitsHispurposeforus,butwecan’tdothatwithoutHishelp.GodhasgivenusinstructionsthroughHisWordsowewillknowhowHewantsustoliveinawaythatpleasesHim.Morethanthat,Hehelpsusfollowthoseinstructions,justlikeyouhelpedyourchildrenfollowtherecipe.TheresultisthatwebecomemoldableliketheplaydoughandGodcanshapeustofitHispurpose.

Children(Grades1‐5)

o Forthisactivityyouwillneeda$20bill(anydenominationwillwork,though)andamailingenvelope.Placethebillintheenvelope,sealit,andhandittoyourchild.Donottellthemwhatisintheenvelope,andbesuretheydonotopenit.

o Tellyourchildyouaregoingtoaskthemtogiveyousomething,andexplainthatit’sveryimportanttheygiveittoyourightaway.Next,askthemtogiveyoua$20billinthenext5seconds.Mostlikelytheywillreplythattheydonothavea$20billandcannotdowhatyouask.Alltheyhaveisanenvelope.Thentellthemtoopentheenvelopeandseewhat’sinside.Askthemagaintogiveyoua$20billinthenext5seconds.Whentheyofferittoyouaffirmwhatagreatjobtheydidfollowingyourinstructions.
