Finding your way around

Hayle Estuary

‘‘I came to work at Hayle after first visiting theestuary in 1983 and finding a rare North Americanwhite-rumped sandpiper on my second ever visit. This would be a good place to work, I thought!!

‘‘Copperhouse Pool Combine your shopping trip with astroll around Copperhouse Creek;unlike most estuaries the birds givegreat, close-up views here. Thispath is level and easily accessible, and runs alongside the estuary.

Ryan’s Field We created this lagoon in 1995out of a dry, grassy field to providea roost for wintering birds. Followthe path to the causeway and walkalong the pavement at the back ofthe lagoon. The traffic can be noisyhere, but you can see roostingbirds hiding behind the islands.Allow at least 40 minutes.

Carnsew Pool Part of Hayle's industrial WorldHeritage Site, this pool wasconstructed to flush sand from the harbour in 1830. The path isnarrow and uneven but has the bestviews of the estuary. You shouldallow at least an hour for this walk.

South West Coast PathFor best views of the main estuaryfollow the coastal footpath – pleasedo not step onto the estuary itself! There is no short cut across theriver but as the path takes youinland around the estuary, you willsee the reserve from every aspect.

Unusually, the RSPBowns the estuary –most UK estuariesbelong to the Crown.
