PASTORAL PONDERINGS Dear FCC Family,
It is an amazing thing to see the growth of a spring garden. The first sprouts peeking out and then with time and care, a bountiful harvest coming from what was once a small seed placed in a bit of dirt.
Some time ago, the people of First Christian Church prepared the ground for a metaphorical garden by creating the Community Ministry fund. A portion of both our time and resources was set aside to care for our larger community. Since then, seeds have been planted that have grown into Upward Basketball, the East School mentoring program, and other ministries.
It’s a well-worn metaphor I know, but it is apt, so bear with me if you please. Over the last few months we have been planting new seeds in our garden, waiting to see what would take root and grow. The first sprouts are being to beginning to show as the result of conversation and discernment.
The first two projects to come out of this intentional work are a response to determining that we especially invested in supporting East School and the surrounding neighborhoods as “our community.”
For East School, we are developing an attendance incentive program to address what the principal, Julie Martin, and other East School staff named as one of their biggest problems. The details are still to be determined but may include such things as a targeted program for families, incentives and support for parents, and school-wide recognition for those with the best and most improved attendance. Vivian Murphy has stepped up to help coordinate this, in addition to her ongoing work with the mentoring program.
For the larger community, we want to cultivate relationships and find ways to empower and support them. To help begin the conversation, we are planning a block party for the neighborhood. There will definitely be food, possibly entertainment, but most importantly an opportunity to share stories and get to know one another. We also hope to enlist community agencies to come and provide information and resources. Elaine West will be coordinating planning for this event. There is potential for a great harvest to come from these early sprouts, but it will require tending by many hands, both now and in the future. Please let myself, Vivian, or Elaine know if you are interested in being a part of either of these efforts. The opportunity is before us to live into the vision of “worshipping God, growing in faith, and serving all in need.” May we find ourselves co-laborers with God in our community, living out our faith for the benefit of others. Grace and peace for the journey, Rev. Sarah Kingsbery

MUSIC MINISTRY
SPECIAL MUSIC: We are pleased to have Curtis Sudduth with us at the 8:20 service this Sunday to share the anthem. Curtis is the son of Rev. Cornell Sudduth, minister at Second Baptist Church. Some of you may recall that he sang at the memorial service for Diana Echols of our congregation. He has an amazing voice and is well known in town for his work on local theatre productions. I know we will be blessed by his gift! This is his first time in worship at FCC, so please give him a warm welcome. The Chancel Choir closes out its musical season this Sunday, sharing the anthem, “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” at the 10:40 service. I’m so grateful for each and every choir member who gives of his/her time and talent throughout the year to bring musical offerings to the Lord. Many of these individuals will be sharing music throughout the summer, too, in the form of instrumental and vocal solos or small ensembles. There is still plenty of room for more, however, so I hope that those of you who do not sing regularly with the choir will consider signing up to offer special music this summer – the sooner, the better! This invitation is open to ALL ages! If you wish to preview congregational song at the 10:40 service this coming week, check out these songs online: “One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails)”; “What a Savior”; “This Is Amazing Grace”; “Mighty to Save”; and “Just As I Am (Travis Cottrell arrangement).” None of these are new to us, but listen to them this week so you can raise a mighty voice to our God who saves! Gretchen Huedepohl FOR YOUR CHRISTIAN PLAYLIST: Add the songs below to your playlist for a spontaneous time of worship as you work out, run errands, work in your garden, or experience a lot windshield time this summer. You may start hearing some of these in our 10:40 worship as well in the next few months!
“Enthroned on High” (the Neverclaim) “Thrive” (Casting Crowns) “Because He Lives (Amen)” (Matt Maher) “Greater (MercyMe) “Beautiful Things” (Gungor) “Cast My Cares” (Tim Timmons) “Worthy, Worthy” (Vertical Church Band)
“Absent from Flesh” (Sojourn) “Lift Your Heads, Weary Saints” (Crowder) “Our God Saves” (Paul Baloche) “Made to Worship” (Chris Tomlin) “God of This City” (Chris Tomlin)
