Dear FriendsWelcome to the Festival of the Sound’s sixth season in the visually and acoustically stunning Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts!
Musicians love travelling to Georgian Bay each summer to play in the intimacy of the Charles W. Stockey Festival PerformanceHall and, thanks to their enthusiasm, we have even more concerts for the 2008 season. Judging from our ever-increasing attendance, our audiences also enjoy listening to wonderful music presented in what is simply the best chamber music hall that I and many of my colleagues have ever performed in.
This summer there are more than 200 artists from three continents performing in over 50 concerts of chamber, orchestral, choral, opera and jazz music. As part of our growth, I’m very pleased to announce the establishment of the Festival Chamber Orchestra, a new, integral part of our
programming, and an opportunity for us to present works we’ve never offered before. Again this year you’ll have the chance to meet the musicians who perform during
the Festival in one of many on-stage interviews, such as those with Canadian icons Phil Nimmons, Peter Appleyard, Gene DiNovi and Walter Homburger. Learn about the Romantic Era with musician and teacher Jeffrey Stokes, and about the history of our own Canadian music with composer-in-residence, Gary Kulesha.
If you have yet to attend a concert in the Stockey Centre, this is the year to come to Parry Sound on beautiful Georgian Bay and discover for yourself how impressive the performance hall and our concerts really are.
Let the 2008 journey begin!

WESLEY BATES was born in Whitehorse, grew up in Saskatchewan and studied fine art at Mount Allison University. In 1982, he took up wood engraving and freelance illustration and established Wood Meadow Press, a small private press through which he illustrates and publishes limited edition books. He also does work for other small presses such as Gaspereau Press and illustrations for books by authors such as W.O. Mitchell and Timothy Findley. In 1994 Porcupine’s Quill published The Point of the Graver, a collection of prints and commentary by Wesley Bates. He now lives in Clifford, Ontario. His Studio in a circa 1880 building still has its original stained glass windows and exterior wood work, a lovely example of rural Ontario storefront architecture.

Music from the Inside OutIn this series of free lectures, discussions and open rehearsals, the
Festival invites you to improve your understanding of and appreciation
for the music you’ll hear this summer. Jeffrey Stokes’s inspiring
explorations of the Romantic age provide the perfect introduction
to the concerts of Week 2. Keith Horner’s chats with musicians provide
a glimpse into the lives and legacies of some of Canada’s most
influential musicians. Meet four Canadian “Icons” all in their eighties
and all still active in their musical careers: Walter Homburger, Gene
DiNovi, Phil Nimmons and Peter Appleyard.
Gary KuleshaOur 2008 composer-in-residence Gary Kulesha is a pianist, conductor
and teacher as well as one of Canada’s most active composers. His
music has been commissioned, performed and recorded by musicians
and ensembles all over the world. A supporter of young composers
and performers, Gary Kulesha directed a Discovery Series of concerts
at the Festival of the Sound from 1996 to 2004. Hear his works at
several concerts this season and meet him in our Overture series.
Beethoven Piano TriosThe Juno award-winning Gryphon Trio has been described by the
Globe and Mail as “one of the best ensembles of its kind in the world,
consistently making music of rare excellence.” They will perform their
cycle of six major Beethoven Piano Trios over three days, July 21 to 23.
Island Queen CruisesEnjoy Georgian Bay sunsets as the cruise ship Island Queen takes a
wandering three-hour route through the wild and rugged beauty of
the 30,000 Islands, a region recently designated by the United Nations
as the Georgian Bay Littoral Biosphere Reserve. These cruises have
been a highlight of every Festival season since our inception, blending
wonderful music with breathtaking scenery. Performances are on the
lower deck of the Island Queen and heard throughout the ship.

∏rinity College Choir CambridgeTrinity College’s long and distinguished choral tradition dates back
to the fourteenth century. Tudor composer Thomas Preston and
20th Century composer Ralph Vaughan Williams are only two of the
well-known names associated with this prestigious choir. The current
mixed choir was established in 1982, a few years after the admission
of women to the undergraduate College. Hear one of England’s
leading choirs on Monday, July 28 in a relaxed evening of music on
the Island Queen and again on Tuesday, July 29 in the outstanding
acoustics of the Charles W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall.
∏he Virtuoso ViolinBring together a group of virtuoso violinists . . . add a selection of
the world’s most impressive violin music by master musicians such as
Paganini, Wieniawski, Sarasate and Heifetz. Don’t miss the spectacular
results in a concert hosted by Moshe Hammer, on Tuesday evening,
July 22 at the Stockey Centre.
Festival Chamber OrchestraAs James Campbell has told you in his introductory remarks,
the Festival of the Sound is proud to launch the Festival Chamber
Orchestra. The orchestra members, the core of whom are drawn
from the Festival’s regular chamber music players, perform without
conductor. We are confident that this vibrant new ensemble will
quickly engage us with its great repertoire, inspired performances
and friendly connection with the audience. Bach’s Concerto for
two violins, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Mozart’s Concerto for
two pianos and orchestra are among the works on the two inaugural
concerts, July 25 and August 8.
Carmina BuranaBased on a collection of 13th century poetry found in a Benedictine
monastery, Carmina Burana embodies themes of love and pleasure,
camouflaged by Latin and old-German text. Carmina Burana occupies
a unique place in the world of classical music incorporating musical
styles from dramatic chants to lyrical songs. The version performed on

This year, you can start your Festival of the Sound experience in June!
Tafelmusik, Canada’s renowned orchestra on period instruments, was
established in 1979, the same year as the Festival of the Sound. The two
organizations have a lot in common, not the least of which is long-term
inspired artistic direction. Under the leadership of Music Director and
concertmaster Jeanne Lamon since 1981, Tafelmusik has achieved
international recognition for its concerts and recordings. The eighteen
core members are all specialists in historical performance practice on
period instruments. When Tafelmusik’s Managing Director Tricia Baldwin
paid an informal visit to the Charles W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall
in its opening season in 2003, she said, “This hall is a Tafelmusik space”
and we agreed to work together to bring the orchestra to our wonderful
Festival audience as often as we could. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to
hear Canada’s finest baroque orchestra in one of its favourite concert halls.
“When the big names of the Baroque era composed their masterpieces 300 years ago they must have dreamed about their hits sounding this good…∏afelmusikwas a time-machine last night, sweeping the audience out of its seats and back to that magic period between 1650 and 1750.”

Magdalena von Eccher is distinguishing
herself as one of Canada’s finest young pianists. Her playing is
intensely expressive, with integrity and grace, in a variety of solo,
chamber, and concerto repertoire. She was awarded first place at the
2006 Canadian National Music Festival as well as the SOCAN award
in the 2007 National Bösendorfer Competition. At 15 she received full
scholarship for the Interlochen Arts Academy program in Michigan.
She has also received sponsorship from the Alberta Foundation for
the Arts for studies at the Orford Arts Centre. Magdalena completed
her Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Lethbridge and
was the recipient of the Faculty of Fine Arts Gold Medal (2007) for
the highest academic achievement. Following the upcoming season
of performances in Canada, U.S.A., and Austria, Magdalena plans to
pursue graduate studies in piano performance. Her first Festival of
the Sound performance was at the Piano Gala in 2007.
Jan Lisiecki is thirteen years old and has been studying
piano since the age of five. He has won a number of awards, including
first place at the National Finals of the Canadian Music Competitions
for four years and the CBC Galaxy Rising Star Scholarship. Last year he
won major prizes in the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition
in Palm Desert, California and the Manchester Concerto Competition
in England. Jan had his orchestral debut with the Calgary Civic
Symphony at age nine, as the youngest winner of the Calgary Concerto
Competition. In 2006, he appeared as a soloist in five concerts at the
National Arts Centre in Ottawa, including the Gala Concert where he
performed alongside Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and Pinchas Zukerman.
After his memorable guest appearances at the 2007 Festival of the
Sound, he is a natural choice for one of our 2007 Stockey Young Artists.
Charles Stockey loved young artists and often expressed his desire for them to perform in the wonderful acoustics of the concert hall that he helped to build. The Festival of the Sound names the Stockey Young Artists each year to honour this wish.
RBC Stockey Young Artists are generously supported by:
RBC Dominion Securities and RBC Foundation support arts and culture through the RBC Emerging Arts Support Project because of their belief in the power of the arts to enrich lives and enhance communities. The Festival of the Sound is developing the RBC Stockey Young Artist program to support exceptional young musicians in their transition to professional careers.

June of 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of one of Parry Sound’s defining landmarks, the CPR Trestle that crosses over the valley of the Seguin River just up the street from the Stockey Centre. At 1,950 feet, it is the longest trestle bridge in Ontario. The June 17, 1908 edition of the Parry Sound North Star reports, “For three years an army of men numbering at one time as high as 5,000. . . has drilled, blasted, bridged and filled its way northward for many miles through country heretofore almost untrodden by the foot of man and today comes the shout of victory in the knowledge of a distinctive engineering triumph.”
The history of Parry Sound has been deeply influenced by the railway with both trans-continental lines passing through town. Any who attended Festival of the Sound concerts in the Parry Sound High School gym will remember the train whistles that played such a prominent role in many concerts. We celebrate those memories and the 100th anniversary of the CPR Trestle with the cover image of the CPR Trestle, done especially for this occasion by wood engraver Wesley Bates.

The Festival’s innovative education program Music Scores is completing its first full cycle of concerts in the spring of 2008. Children in thirteen area schools who are completing Grade 6 have had six concert experiences, including a brass trio, a woodwind quintet, a jazz ensemble, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, Strings Across the Sky and James Campbell with the Zapp string quartet. Prior to each of these concerts, the musicians visited every school, getting to know the students in an informal setting, demonstrating their instruments and preparing them for the concert. Then all 700 children come to the Stockey Centre by bus or on foot to listen to the musicians, now their friends, in a formal concert setting. No opening night audience can match the excitement that precedes each of these concerts.
Music Scores is offered without charge to the children, their families or the schools. The Festival of the Sound thanks the following for the support that makes Music Scores possible:
The Recording Industries Music Performance Fund of the American Federation of Musicians
Ontario Arts Education Partnership Initiative, Ontario Ministry of Culture & Ministry of Education

The Festival of the Sound delivers Canada’s finest summer experiences – intimate performances by outstanding chamber musicians in the spectacular Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts on the shores of Georgian Bay. To present world calibre concerts at affordable ticket prices, the Festival Board raises two dollars for every dollar generated at the Box Office. Since we keep administrative costs as low as possible, your membership donation has a direct impact on artistic programming and free educational opportunities for children and adults. A recent survey of 226 Canadian performing arts organizations showed that 8% of the total revenue was raised through individual donations. At the Festival of the Sound, our individual donors contributed 18% of our revenue in 2007. Thanks to the support of this wonderful membership base, we are now one of Canada’s most successful musical organizations.
All contributions are gratefully received and are eligible for a tax credit receipt. With a donation of $25 or more, you will become a member of the Festival of the Sound and receive a pre-Christmas mailing with special offers on passes and merchandise, our newsletter Soundings outlining advance information about the upcoming season, early mailing of the season brochure, and listing in the souvenir programme. The Festival Board offers contributors of $250 or more tickets to their concert of choice (excluding Opening Night, cruises and special events).
Your investment in the future of the Festival of the Sound is very much appreciated.

Since May of 2006, donations of publicly listed securities (shares, mutual funds, bonds and bills listed on a prescribed stock exchange) to charities are exempt from Canadian capital gains taxation.
Making a gift of securities to the Festival of the Sound is quite simple. Meet with your broker or financial advisor to discuss the securities that you wish to donate, and then contact us at the Festival Office to inform us of your intentions and to get our account information. Your broker can transfer the funds electronically to the Festival’s brokerage account. You will be issued a charitable donation tax receipt for the full value of the security at the close of the day it is received. The Festival of the Sound will sell the securities without being subject to capital gains tax. You may direct your donation to our annual operating campaign or to the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund.
Call the Festival Office at 1-866-364-0061 and ask to speak to Executive Director Margaret Boyd if you would like further information.

24 Fesπival of πhe Sound 2008 1-866-364-0061
In 2002, long-time Festival of the Sound supporters Charles and Lois Stockey made a donation of $1.7 million to name the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. At last the Festival had a home, an intimate performance hall that has come to be ranked as one of the finest in the world for chamber music. During the 25th Anniversary Season in 2004, the Festival Board established the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund to honour our benefactors. To ensure the long-term health of the organization, all donations directed to this fund are invested, with the interest used to support annual operations.
Charles Stockey died in September of 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lois lives in Victoria but maintains a keen interest in news from Parry Sound and looks forward to her annual visit for the summer concert series.
Information about the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund is available at all Festival of the Sound concerts. Speak to one of the Directors wearing a “gold badge” or call the Festival Office. Contributions of any size are welcome and are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
