James’ PerspectiveWhenIcametoCarmelImanagedtogetusedtoitquickerthanIimaginedthankstothesupportofthestaffandtheotherstudents.IenjoystudyingFoundationLearningbecauseIfinditextremelyhelpfulandinformativeandIknowthateverythingIstudyisworthwhile.Iwassurprisedatthelevelofunderstandingandsupportthatwasofferedtomebythestaffwhoknewexactlyhowtohelpme.AfewmonthsafterstartingatCarmelIdiscoveredIhadatalentforentertainmentandwiththeencouragementofeveryonearoundmeIhopetobeabletobuildonmytalentandgetajobasanentertainer.IhavealwayshadadesiretohelppeoplelessfortunatethanmyselfandasaresultIhavealsoconsideredjoiningtheRoyalBritishLegion.

What will I study?

ThecourseissuitableforstudentswhoareworkingatEntryLevel1throughtoNVQLevel1.

Personalisedlearningprogrammescoverthreemainareas:

Vocational / Subject Learning: Thiswillinvolvedevelopingskillsaroundtheworldofworkbothgenericandspecificworkareas.ForexampleBusinessandRetail,ICT,HealthandSocialCare,SportandActiveLeisure,HairandBeauty,LandBasedStudies,Media,andTravelandTourism.

Personal and Social Development: Thiswillinvolvedevelopingskillsandknowledgearoundyourpersonalandsocialneeds,forexampleHealthyLiving,TravelTrainingandSocialAwareness.Itallowstherecognitionofalltypesofachievementsgainedoutsideofformallearningandachievementsinareasoflearningthatareofkeysignificancetotheindividual.Itprovidesastructureinwhichlearnerscanidentifytheirownstrengths,weaknessesandgoals.

Functional Skills:ThesequalificationsaredesignedtoprovidethenecessarylevelsofEnglish,MathsandICTskillsneededto‘function’intoday’ssocietyandworkplace.

TheyareakeycomponentoftheFoundationLearningatEntrylevelandLevel1.

Aspartofthelearningprogramme,

sometimesyouwillbeawayfromthecollegepremisestolearnnewskillswhichmayinvolverisk,egindependenttravel.Youwillalsoneedmoneyoccasionallyfortripsout.

How will I be assessed?

Initial Assessment: Thiswilltakeplacetofindoutwhichlevelyoushouldbeworkingatandtodevelopyourpersonalisedlearningprogramme.

Recording Progress:Progresswillbeassessedbothformativelyandsummatively.YouwillbuildaportfolioofevidenceandyourIndividualLearningPlantargetswillbeformativelyassessedattheendofeachsessiontorecordyourprogress.

EachtermyourPersonalTutorwillcompileareporttorecordyourprogressacrossthewholecurriculum.

What is the department like?

Youwillbestudyinginwellresourcedclassroomswithmultimediatechnologyandwillhaveaccesstocomputersandtheinternettohelpyouwithyourstudies.Allourclassroomsareaccessibletoallstudentsregardlessofdisability.Wealsohaveawellequippedflatinwhichyoucandevelopyourindependentlivingskillsandourowngardenandgreenhouse.

What support will I receive?

Wearecommittedtosupportingyouasanindividualandwillhelpyoutoachieveyourpersonaltargets.Groupsizesaresmallataround10students.Youwillbesupportedinyourlessonsbyourteamofclassroomassistants.Teacherswillhelpyoureflectonyourachievementsandguideyouinthesettingoftargetstohelpimproveyourperformancethroughouttheyear.

Danielle’s PerspectiveThethingIlikethemostaboutcomingtoCarmelisseeingmyfriendsandthestaffeveryday.DuringmytimehereI’vedoneNailsandBeautyenrichmentwhichwasreallygood.Ilearntalotofnewskillsandnowpracticeonmyfriends.IalsowentontheresidentialtoRookinHouseintheLakeDistrictandreallyenjoyedtheactivities,particularlythehorseriding.Thehighlightofmytimeatcollegehasbeendevelopingconfidencewhenusingtransportandgainingmoreindependenceandconfidencewithinthecommunity.Iamalsoabouttogetabuspassandtraveltoandfromcollegeindependently.WhenIleaveCarmelIhopetostudyChildcareorahairdressingcourse.

How do I apply for the course?

YoumustapplyusingthestandardcollegeproceduresanddeadlinedatewhichcanbefoundontheCarmelCollegewebsite.WehaveanumberofOpenEveningsduringNovemberatwhichyoucanspeakwithamemberoftheFoundationLearningteamshouldyourequirefurtherinformation.

How will I get to college?

Wehaveseveralcollegebuseswhichyoucanuse.Howeverifyouareunabletotravelindependently,theLocalAuthoritywillprovidefreetransporttoandfromcollege.

What activities will I do in my lessons?

Youwilltakepartinarangeofactivitiesincluding:

Daily Living Skills: shoppingforfood,cookingmeals,washingandironingclothes,cleaningtheflat.

Community and Leisure: personalsafety,travellingaround,shopping,seekinghelpandadvice,usingcommunityfacilities,citizenship.

Practical and Vocational Skills: workskills,workexperience,careersadviceandinformation,andarangeofvocationaloptionse.g.ICT,Media,Environment,NailsandBeauty,Retail.

What will happen at break time?

Youareencouragedtobeindependentatbreakandlunchtimehoweveryoumustremain

oncollegepremises.Ifyouneedsupportitisavailableandwillbediscussedaspartofyourinitialassessment.

What if I have personal care or medical needs?

Wehaveacareteamthatcansupportyouwithyourindividualneeds.Thiscanbediscussedatyourinitialassessment.

What can I do after I have completed my course?

Thereareanumberofprogressionroutesavailable.Theseincludefurthereducation,vocationaltrainingandemployment.ThereisaConnexionsAdviserlinkedtothedepartmentandtheyworkcloselywithyouthroughoutyourcoursetoensureyoumakeawellinformed,realisticdecisionaboutyourfuture.
