Superior new Caterham delivers thrilALL Caterham Sevens are a mag-ic blend of new and old.

Sevens will always be fourwheels and a slim central body,but it’s what lies within that iscentral to the 620R’s approach.

Under the bonnet there is a2.0-litre Ford-sourced engine,which in the R500 produced amighty 263bhp. But in the 620R ithas a supercharger added, whichbumps the power to 310bhp.There’s also a six-speed sequen-tial gearbox, and the track-honedsuspension has been influencedby the Caterham F1 team.

The carbon fibre wings, mas-sive exhaust pipe and wide tyrestell the story of a car that isn’t

going to mess about. Finished ina choice of eye-catching colourswith the option of vivid stripes,the 620R is not what you wouldcall subtle.

Any Seven version is designedto be fun rather than a usefulload carrier, so you can forgetany notion of doing the weeklyshop in it. It’s also a car that re-quires nimble limbs and relative-

ly slim hips, as you slide into thetight carbon fibre bucket seats.

There is a boot, of sorts, whichcan fit five or six shopping bagsin it, but that’s also where theroof goes, so if it rains be pre-pared for some rapid repacking.

With a supercharger strappedto it the 2.0-litre engine has im-mense power and torque and insuch a light car its effects aremagnified. It’s worth remember-ing that it has a superior power-to-weight ratio than the BugattiVeyron. Caterham quotes a0-60mph time of 2.79 seconds.

It’s the same in the bendswhere the wide tyres offer hugeamounts of grip, the steering

is heavy but so communicativeand direct, and the brakes arestrong and reliable. A ten minutecross country blast can leave youdrained, but you’ll come back formore.

On the one hand the 620R’sprice tag of £49,995 seems like alot for a car with such a minimal-ist approach. There is no climatecontrol or other fancy luxuries,

and the options list is relativelymodest.

On the other hand there areonly a handful of cars that canhit 60mph in under 3 seconds –and the majority of them willcost you more than £100,000.

Everyone should try a Cater-ham, but perhaps not everyoneshould own a 620R.

If you’re the kind of personwho finds white water raftingtedious, then the 620R can de-liver the kind of adrenalin hitthat only fighter pilots and astro-nauts are used to.
