From the Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers
This week our Year 3 and 5 students have been involved in the National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). On Tuesday they sat the Language Conventions and Writing tests. The Language Conventions test looks at spelling, punctuation and the ability to use words correctly in sentences. The Writing test focussed on Persuasive text. Today the students sat the Reading test and they will sit the Numeracy test on Thursday. We look forward to being able to use this information to inform our future teaching.
READING This week most parents should have received information about the ‘Phase of Reading’ that their child is currently working at. The parent information is designed to enable you to use strategies at home which will reinforce the classroom work students are doing. I would encourage you to read this information and contact the class teacher if you have any questions.

HISTORY We have been offered the opportunity to be involved in a very exciting project at the Military Museum this weekend. A group of Year 6 students will be attending the live filming of the new series, ‘Tony Robinson’s Tour of Duty’. The HISTORY channel will be filming an episode in Darwin to commemorate the Centenary of WW1. The students are making and collecting items that will be put into a specially made time capsule that will be opened in 50 years’ time. This will be a very exciting time for the students and although we were given very short notice to participate, they are very excited.
WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY – PINK DAY Our SRC have decided to combine two very special activities into the one day. The National Walk Safely to School Day will be held on Friday 23rd May. As stated in last week’s Flyer all classes will be walking around the school from 8.30. Parents and siblings are welcome to join us for the walk.
We would also like to encourage all students and parents to wear something pink on this day and make a gold coin donation. The SRC will be selling pink ribbons. The proceeds from this will be given to the Breast Cancer Foundation in the name of Mrs Liz Roberts. Many of you would know that Liz was a much loved parent at our school and had three sons; Liam, Ethan and Callum. Liz passed away last month and as many of our students knew her and the boys, we ask that everyone join us for this very worthwhile cause. Further information about the cost of the ribbons will be put in next week’s newsletter.
UNIVERSITY OF NSW – ICAS Next Tuesday the students who have paid to take part in the Computer Skills Competition will sit this test. We wish them luck in this. Science, Writing and Spelling competitions will be held later this term. The English and Maths competitions are scheduled for Term 3.
Yours sincerely Yvonne Harding Acting Principal
