Al sur de la Bahía de Cádiz, baña-da por las aguas del Atlántico y ro-deada de marismas, Chiclana dela Frontera se ha convertido en unimportante núcleo turístico gra-cias a sus incomparables playas,sus preciosos parajes naturales,su clima y sus modernas infraes-tructuras. Fundada por AlonsoPérez de Guzmán en 1303 sobreterritorios antiguamente ocupa-dos por fenicios, cartaginenses yromanos, este municipio de alre-dedor de 75.000 habitantes haexperimentado un gran desarrolloen los últimos años -no en vanoposee actualmente el mayor nú-mero de plazas hoteleras de laprovincia de Cádiz-, algo que hasabido conjugar a la perfeccióncon el respeto al medio ambiente,a las tradiciones y a su rico patri-monio histórico y cultural.
Así, a siete kilómetros de su núcleourbano se encuentra la playa de LaBarrosa, merecedora de laBandera Azul de los Mares Limpiosde Europa y considerada una delas mejores playas de la costa an-daluza por la completa gama deservicios que ofrece, por su limpie-za y por su apariencia virgen y sal-vaje. A su lado, más pequeña perocon el mismo encanto, la playa deSancti Petri se extiende junto al an-tiguo pueblo pesquero del mismonombre, ahora abandonado, queaún conserva cierto aire marinero ybien merece una visita sólo por elplacer de pasear por sus callesimaginando lo que fue en el pasa-do. Desde ambas playas es posi-ble divisar el islote de Sancti Petri,terreno sobre el que se hallaba unode los más famosos santuarios dela Antigüedad, el Templo de
Hércules, dónde se creía que esta-ban enterrados los restos del héroemitológico y cuyo lugar ocupanahora las ruinas del Castillo deSancti Petri, fortaleza construidaen el siglo XVIII.
El centro urbano de Chiclana tam-bién posee atractivos de toda clase,empezando por el carácter amable yacogedor de los chiclaneros. Así,vale la pena adentrarse en el casco
antiguo y visitar alguna de sus tien-das de artesanía, recorrer el merca-do o acudir a las diversas bodegas,bares y restaurantes donde poderdegustar la estupenda gastronomía
local, prestando especial atenciónal magnífico pescado y marisco au-tóctono, a la repostería -imprescin-dible probar las tortas de almendradel Convento de las MadresAgustinas Recoletas-, y a los famo-sos vinos chiclaneros, elaboradosde forma totalmente tradicional yprincipal seña de identidad culina-ria de este municipio.
Divida por el río Iro en dos barrios-conocidos como "El lugar" y "Labanda"-, Chiclana también ate-sora interesantes monumentoscomo la Iglesia y el Convento deJesús Nazareno -la construcciónde estilo barroco más importantede la comarca-, la Iglesia de SanTelmo, la Ermita del Santo Cristo -construido en el siglo XVI, el tem-plo más antiguo de Chiclana-, laTorre del Reloj -en la Plaza Mayor,uno de los edificios más represen-tativos de Chiclana-, y la Ermitade Santa Ana, construida sobreun cerro desde donde se obtienenunas impresionantes vistas de lasmarismas, las lagunas que for-man el Complejo Endorreico deChiclana y los espacios protegi-dos pertenecientes al ParqueNatural Bahía de Cádiz que rode-an esta hermosa villa.
También resultan de gran interéslos numerosos pinares y parquesforestales perfectamente acondi-cionados para su disfrute que seextienden por los alrededores delmunicipio, así como las VíasPecuarias que unen muchos de lospueblos de la Bahía de Cádiz y quesuponen un aliciente excepcionalpara los amantes del senderismo oel cicloturismo. Junto a las playas ylos parajes naturales se levantancomplejos turísticos, hoteles, cam-pos de golf, balnearios, centros co-merciales y toda clase de facilida-des y ofertas de ocio para los turis-tas que hacen de Chiclana de laFrontera un destino incomparable.

Chiclana de laFronteraTo the south of the Bay of Cádiz,lapped by the waters of theAtlantic and surrounded by mars-hes, Chiclana de la Frontera hasbecome an important tourist re-sort thanks to its incomparablebeaches, beautiful landscapes,its climate and its modern infras-tructures. Founded by AlonsoPérez de Guzmán in 1303 on landonce settled by the Phoenicians,Carthaginians and the Romans,this town of around 70,000 inha-bitants has experienced muchgrowth over recent years. It hasthe largest number of hotel bedsin the province of Cádiz, but hasmanaged this to perfection withits respect for the environment,its traditions and its rich histori-cal and cultural heritage.
Just seven kilometres from itscity centre you will f ind LaBarrosa beach, which has deser-ved the European blue flag forclean waters, and is consideredone of the best beaches on theAndalusian coast because of thewide range of services on offer,its cleanliness and its wild, uns-poilt appearance. Alongside it,smaller but just as charming,Sancti Petri beach spreads outalongside the old fishing townthat shares its name, but whichhas been abandoned. Even so, itstill has a certain fisherman'sair, and it is worth visiting, ifonly for the fun of strollingthrough the streets and wonde-ring what it must have been likein the past. Visible from bothbeaches is the islet of SanctiPetri, land on which one of themost famous sanctuaries of an-cient times once stood, theTemple of Hercules, where it isbelieved the remains of themythological hero were buried,the site of which is now occu-pied by the ruins of the SanctiPetri castle, a fortress built du-ring the 18th century.
Chiclana's town centre also has at-tractions of all types, starting withthe pleasant, welcoming character
of the people of Chiclana. It isworth exploring the old quarter andvisiting some of its handcraftshops, going around the market orvisiting different wine cellars, barsand restaurants where you can en-joy the marvellous local cuisine,making sure you try the local fishand seafood, the desserts - anddon't forget to taste the tortas dealmendra (almond tarts) made atthe Madres Agustinas RecoletasConvent and the famous Chiclanawines, made using totally traditio-nal methods and the most famousculinary feature of this town.
Divided into two neighbourhoodsby the River Iro ("El Lugar" and"La Banda") Chiclana also hou-ses interesting monuments suchas the Church and Convent ofJesús Nazareno - the most im-portant Baroque-style construc-tion in the district. The Church ofSan Telmo, the Santo CristoHermitage, built in the 16th cen-tury and the oldest temple inChiclana, the tower of the clock-in, the Plaza Mayor, one of themost representative buildings ofChiclana- and the Santa AnaHermitage, built on a hill givingimpressive views over the mars-hes, the lakes forming theChiclana Endorreic Complex andthe protected areas belonging tothe Bay of Cádiz Nature Park thatsurround this beautiful town.

Desde las playas de Chiclana “La Barrosa” y “Sancti Petri”, situadas a 7kilómetros del casco urbano de la localidad, es posible contemplar la Islay el Castillo de Sancti Petri, donde según la leyenda estuvo ubicado eltemplo fenicio dedicado a Melkart (Hércules). Chiclana tiene una exten-sión de 203 km2, de los cuales cerca de un tercio lo ocupa el ParqueNatural Bahía de Cádiz compuesto de marismas, ríos, caños, cordonesdunares, islotes, etc. A ambos lados del río Iro, se forman varias lagunasy charcas temporales destacando las lagunas de Jeli y Montellano decla-radas reservas naturales y zona de especial protección para las aves. Deespecial belleza son el Pinar de la Espartosa, el Pinar del Hierro y el Pinardel Parque periurbano la Barrosa.
The beaches of Chiclana "La Barrosa" and "Sancti Petri" are found 7kilometres from the town centre, and offer views of the Islet and theCastle of Sancti Petri, where, according to legend, the Phoenician templededicated to Melkart (Hercules) was located. Chiclana covers a surfacearea of 203 km2, a third of which is occupied by the Bahía de CádizNature Park, which comprises swamps, rivers, canes, chains of dunes,islets, etc. Various temporary lagoons and ponds form on both sides ofthe River Iro, in particular the Jeli and Montellano lagoons, which havebeen declared nature reserves and whose bird life is subject to specialprotection. Pinar de la Espartosa, Pinar del Hierro and Pinar del Parquein the outskirts of la Barrosa are particularly beautiful.
Chiclana comparte las excelencias peculiares de la gastronomía andaluza,si bien posee elementos que le confieren un carácter genuino. Fe de ello sonsus apreciados productos de la huerta, sus mariscos y sus pescados deestero. En la elaboración de los embutidos se siguen procedimientosartesanales de fabricación, ofreciendo especialidades como la butifarra, loschicharrones, la longaniza o la morcilla. El plato más característico loconstituye la berza chiclanera. La repostería, con una amplia gama deespecialidades, también es objeto de merecida fama en la comarca. Esobligado mencionar la torta de almendras, que se elabora en el convento delas Agustinas Recoletas. El vino de Chiclana es, sin duda, la aportación másnotable de la ciudad, famosa por sus blancos, finos y moscateles,elaborados con procesos rigurosamente tradicionales.
Chiclana has the same specialities of Andalusian food and drink in general,but adds elements that give it genuine character. This comprises its highlyprized agricultural produce, seafood and marsh fish. Its sausages andprepared meats are still made using traditional methods, and includespecialties such as butifarra (sausage), chicharrones (pork scratching),longaniza (spicy pork sausage) and morcilla (black pudding). The mostcharacteristic dish is berza chiclanera (Chiclana Cabbage). Its confectionary,with a wide range of specialities, is deservedly famous in the area. The tortade almendra (almond tart) produced at the Agustinas Recoletas convent isalso worth a mention. Chiclana's wine is, without doubt, the city's mostoutstanding contribution to this area. White wines, fino wines and muscatels,produced using strictly traditional methods.
El principal eje histórico chiclanero gira en torno a la IglesiaParroquial de San Juan Bautista, bello ejemplo neoclásico, construi-da entre 1773 y 1819. En su interior destaca una parte del retablo dela antigua iglesia, obra de Roque Balduque (1552). El Convento deJesús Nazareno es la obra más importante del barroco en Chiclana yfue construido entre 1667 y 1674 gracias a los beneficios del comer-cio con América. En su exterior es de admirar la portada de mármolde Carrara. Dignas de mención son también la Iglesia de San Telmoque data del Siglo XVIII y la Ermita de Santa Ana, con planta ochava-da y rodeada de arcada, que es visible desde toda la comarca debidoa su altura sobre la ciudad.
The historical heritage of Chiclana revolves around the San JuanBautista parish church, a beautiful example of the neoclassical style,which was built between 1773 and 1819. Inside, part of the altarbelonging to the old church, work of Roque Balduque (1552) is of par-ticular interest. The Jesús Nazareno convent is Chiclana's mostimportant Baroque building. It was built between 1667 and 1674 withthe profits of trade with America. It has a beautiful facade, made ofCarrara marble. The San Telmo church, dating back to the 18thCentury is also notable. Lastly, the Santa Ana Hermitage, situated ona high spot over the city, is visible from all over the area. It has anoctagonal floor and is surrounded by arcades.
Como en otras localidades de la provincia, el carnaval es la primera fiesta delaño, seguida de la sentida Semana Santa chiclanera. Sin embargo, la fiestapor excelencia de la ciudad tiene lugar en junio y se vincula en su origen a unaantigua feria de ganado. Mantiene testimonialmente este carácter y se ha con-vertido en la fiesta más representativa. El vino fino de Chiclana se ha converti-do en elemento obligado en las reuniones de las casetas, que se convierten enel segundo hogar durante la feria. La noche del 23 de junio es conocida popu-larmente como la fiesta de "Juanes y Juanas" (Hogueras de San Juan). Un mesdespués se celebra una gran verbena y la exhibición de fuegos artificiales ha-cen de los aledaños de la Ermita de Santa Ana un lugar muy animado durantela noche. Tras el verano, el 8 de septiembre se celebra la festividad de la patro-na, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, con olores de vendimia en el ambiente.
Just like so many towns in the province, Carnival is the first festival of theyear, followed by the heartfelt Easter Week. Nevertheless, Chiclana'sfestival par excellence takes place in June and had its roots in the oldcattle fair. It still has elements of this kind, and it has now become thecity's most characteristic festival. Chiclana's fino wine is a vital part of thegatherings in fiesta houses, which in practice become a second homeduring the fiestas. Commonly known as the Juan y Juanas fiestas(Hogueras de San Juan - Bonfires of San Juan), on the night of 23 June.One month later, a big street party and firework display is celebrated bythe villagers at the Santa Ana hermitage, a very lively place on this night.The festival of the patron saint "Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios" takes placeon 8 September, with the scent of the grape harvest in the air.
