Genetically modified organisms (GMO) is any organisms whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Genetic engineering was first accomplished by Herbert Boyer and Stanely Cohen in 1973 . GMOs are very useful in different fields like GM bacteria are used to produce foreign protein human insulin. Australian company Florigene and Japanese company Suntory created blue rose. Transgenic animals are used as experimental models to perform phenotypic and biomedical research. There are certain controversy and regulation regarding genetic modification of organisms with some of the most marked difference occurring between USA and Europe.
