DRAMA
Drama typically use real life situation but mostly they start off with characters that are in a real life situation. They typically revolve around domestic/social situations. They are often ‘slice of life’ and in a short film will have a moralistic ending or a twist.
CONVENTIONS OF DRAMA
• They use real life situations using realistic characters, setting and story.
• It portrays character development
• Social interaction
• They typically make the audience feel strong emotions to the characters.
• They can include non diegetic sound to build emotions etc but often do not .
SUB-GENRES
Historical Drama: • Dramatic events that have happened in the past.
• This fits into our idea of having a watch/heirloom that is passed down in the family with different reasons of use for each owner.
• Our film is set in the present but the main character reflects on his experiences in the First World War.
• Our short film has a moralistic ending.
CONVENTIONS OF SHORT FILMS
• Short films typically have 2 or 3 characters to allow the audience to connect with the characters.
• Short films have a twist in the end or pass on a moral message.
• The budget is kept low because the director does not have the backing for the project.
• The max length of a short film is 35 min but most of them keep to the 5-10 min time.
• They use everyday situation so that the audience can relate to the story quickly.
