A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Marge Jones
Newsletter
Marianne Gage 706-973-0611
The Scarecrow Stomp is behind us now and the winners have been announced and congratulated. Now it is time to move on and get involved with the Christmas Market. That is another fun event we host – making and selling craft items we make as well as making and buying the baked goods we all donate. Come to a “Crafternoon” and bring your own ideas for crafts we can make, and offer to help on the days of the event.
I know you may think that I keep saying the same thing about all of us working togeth-er to make our projects successful – but it is absolutely true. We cannot do all that we do without every member’s help and involvement. We have a “core” of long time members who help with almost everything we do. And I appreciate your devotion to helping us to succeed. But I need more of our newer members to step up and get more involved. Don’t be afraid to take on the chairmanship of something we are plan-ning. Or perhaps co-chair with someone you would like to work with. And if you don’t feel you are ready to head up one of these events, at least offer to help and get involved.
The club needs to grow to be able to do the work we would like to do, but we need everyone helping in some way. There are members who have chaired these events many times over the years and are willing to help with details and planning. But I need every member contributing your talents and skills for the club to continue with the current projects and hopefully some new ones.
Let your ideas be heard and step up to offer your help. Get involved!! Stay connect-ed!! Talk about the club to friends and neighbors!! This is how we can grow together and be able to offer even more help to our community.
Marge
TREASURER: Karoline DeJarnette
1st VICE PRESIDENT/MEMBERSHIP:
Pat Wozny
We currently have 38 dues paying members. Thank you to
each and everyone who has invited guests to our meetings.
GFWC challenged each club to increase membership by 10%
this year. We have reached this goal. My wish is that we can
have six more members by year end. Invite your friends and
neighbors to our meetings. Introduce yourself to some of our
new members. Everyone needs to feel they are part of this
wonderful organization.
2nd VICE PRESIDENT: Marianne Gage
As of September 30, 2018, we have balances of $16,836 in our Operating Account and $20,206 in our Money Market Account. The Scarecrow Stomp was a huge success! The com-mittee did an outstanding job limiting our expenses to a total of $300 giving us a net profit of $3,000.00 which will be donated to the Lumpkin County Library.
SECRETARY: Lana Hootselle
It is that time of year when we look back on our volunteer
efforts and begin the process of writing narratives and filing
reports on our wonderful projects and accomplishments over
the past year. This has been a busy year with many projects,
hours and donations and I look forward to sharing these
achievements with GFWC Georgia. Give yourselves a pat on
the back, this has been an outstanding year.
Thank you to all CSP chairwomen for attending our recent
meeting to update your books and to review the new reporting
guidelines for 2018 -2020. A special welcome to our new
chairs, Donna Brown with Arts and DJ Gordineer with Public
Issues. GFWC and GFWC Georgia have shared some wonderful
new ideas and everyone left the meeting inspired to do some
new and exciting things in the upcoming year.
If you have not signed up to participate in one of our six Com-
munity Service Programs I encourage you to contact one of
these ladies and attend their next planning meeting. I promise,
it will be a fun, rewarding and exciting year and one that will
benefit our community in so many ways.
CARES & CONCERNS
Our sincere condolences to Margaret Nemec on the passing of her brother.
Come take a trip in the mountains with us on November 8th. We will have a carpool leaving from the Walmart parking lot at 9:15 going to the "Gourd Place", followed by the "Mark of the Potter" and "Hickory Flat Pottery" then lunch at Chop House at Laprades in Clarksville and then the "Burton Gallery". It should be a fun filled day. Hope you can join us. There is no charge except for lunch on your own at the restaurant. There will be a sign up sheet at the November general meeting.
A lovely fall day was enjoyed by nine of our members who were led on a tour of the newly renovated Gold Museum by Site Manager Sam McDuffie. The $800K renovation added a much needed facelift to the prop-erty and added many new and interesting displays de-picting the "golden age" of Dahlonega. After the tour, the group had lunch at Gustavos.
GFWC Georgia North East District Fall Meeting
Six of our members enjoyed a fun day of learning and making
new friends at our Fall District Meeting. The “Mini-Mart” was
filled with great ideas for us to use at our club.
ARTS: Donna Brown
Arts Report: The Arts Committee invites the DWC membership to join us in visiting the Annual Quilt Show at The Bowen Cen-ter for the Arts, 334 Hwy 9 North, Dawsonville, GA. We will meet at the Community House on Thursday, October 11 at 10:30 and carpool to the Bowen. After viewing the show, we will eat lunch and then return to Dahlonega. Please contact Donna Brown (404-694-4534 or [email protected]) to let me know you are going (that way we will know not to leave you). The University of North Georgia Music Department has started
their Fall concert series. Concerts are free and offer excellent
opportunities for the community to enjoy a variety of music.
Mark your calendars now for these unique opportunities.
Dr. Philip Snyder will present a classical guitar performance of
Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo with pianist Vivian
Doublestein in the Gloria Shott Performance Hall on the
Dahlonega Campus.
On Oct. 24, Dr. Joe Chapman, concert pianist and UNG director
of keyboard studies, will perform a concert featuring music
from Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. The program will be held at
8 p.m. in the UNG Dahlonega Campus Nix Fine Arts Center.
Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.
The UNG Musical Theatre Workshop group will present the Musical Theatre Macabre on Oct. 30 and 31. The show will fea-ture a variety of selections from Broadway shows and movies such as "Sweeney Todd," "Little Shop of Horrors," "Harry Potter," "Wicked," "Jekyll and Hyde," "Young Frankenstein" and many more. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and 2 p.m. Oct. 31 in the Gloria Shott Performance Hall on the Dahlonega Campus. The shows are open to the public and admission is free. In November, the UNG Orchestra will perform Handel's "Messiah" in collaboration with the Dawson Community Cho-rale. This particular presentation will be somewhat unique when compared to traditional "Christmas" Messiah concerts, because it will also include some of the favorites from the "Easter" portion of Handel's classic, such as "The Trumpet Shall Sound" and "Worthy Is the Lamb," along with the ever-popular "Hallelujah Chorus." Performances are scheduled for Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hoag Student Center Auditorium on UNG's Dahlonega Campus and Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Dawsonville. General admission is $10, but UNG fac-ulty and staff and Dawson County Arts Council members get in for $5. The concert is free to all UNG students with a valid ID.
Other upcoming free performances include: The UNG Wind Ensemble will hold a free concert Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. at the Hoag Auditorium on UNG's Dahlonega Campus. The Patriot Choir and UNG Men's Quartet will hold a free fall concert Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. at the Gloria Shott Performance Hall on UNG's Dahlonega Campus. The UNG Singers and Le Belle Voci will hold two free fall con-certs. Their performances are scheduled for Nov. 9at 8 p.m. at the Dahlonega Baptist Church and Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. at the Dahlonega United Methodist Church. The UNG Singers and Le Belle Voci will also perform a concert as part of the community's "Musica Variata Series" Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. at the Chapel at Big Canoe. Voice majors from the Dahlonega and Gainesville campuses will perform a cooperative fall student voice recital at the Gloria Shott Performance Hall on the Dahlonega Campus Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. On Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m., the UNG Singers, Le Belle Voci, UNG Chorale and the Men's Ensemble will hold a cooperative con-cert at the Chapel at First Baptist Church in Gainesville. On Nov. 19 at 8 p.m., the UNG Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz will perform at the Gloria Shott Performance Hall. The All American Piano Celebration concert, featuring Dr. Joe Chapman, will be held Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. in the Gloria Shott Performance Hall. On Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m., the UNG Singers and Le Belle Voci will hold a concert at Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega. The UNG Chorale and Men's Ensemble will hold two free holi-day concerts. The performances are scheduled for Dec. 1 at the Ed Cabell Theatre on UNG's Gainesville Campus at 7 p.m., Dec. 3 at Briarwood Baptist Church in Watkinsville at 7 p.m., and Dec. 5 at the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Center at 2 p.m. Check the website https://ung.edu/music/music-events.php for additional performances by the Jazz Band and the Orches-

We did our last Adopt-a-Road pickup on 7 Sep and will
wait until springtime to do the next one. Thanks to Lau-
ren, Karen, Lucille, Marianne, Karoline, and Lana for
scouring Rock House Rd for other people’s trash. Several
members met at my house on 14 Sep to make potential
crafts for the Christmas Market. Lana, Lauren, Laurie,
Marianne, Marge, Karoline, and Donna created a variety
of items to be considered for sale, including clothespin
wreaths, refrigerator magnets, rock art, and a clothespin
cross.
Our next Conservation opportunity is a work day at the
Tallulah Falls School’s President’s Garden. Any club
member who wants to participate will meet at the
WalMart parking lot at 9:15 am on Monday, 15 Oct, and
carpool to the school. Bring work gloves and garden
tools (rakes, clippers, etc.). A 4th quarter meeting will be
held later; date to be determined.
Education Service Program will have a meeting at the Commu-nity House, Nov. 7th, Wednesday, 10:30 am. Coffee and snacks will be served. We will discuss the Short Story Contest for Middle and/or High School students. We will also discuss dates and places for a Ronda Rich After-noon/Evening in order to compose a proposal for the Board. Both projects will be carried out in 2019, but they need plan-ning now. School supplies and K-cups were delivered to Mandi Norton in the Veteran and Adult Learner Office at UNG. Mandi was ex-tremely grateful and thanked the Education and Conservation Committees for the $100 donation last month.
Home Life had a new facility that we visited this month, Tan-glewood Personal Care. This is a lovely facility with only 8 resi-dents so far. On Wednesday, September 26th five DWC ladies helped give manicures to 4 charming ladies ranging in age from 97-102 years old. We all had a wonderful visit and it was a special blessing to spend time with these beautiful ladies. We plan on coming back soon to play bingo with them. On Friday, November 2, at 1:30pm, an Auction Party is planned at Gold City Assisted Living. This is our second Party for Gold City this year and all 23 residents are looking forward to our visit.

A GREAT BIG, HEARTY THANK YOU to everyone who
helped make this year’s Scarecrow Stomp a success, and
to Lori for being a good co-chair who offered help before
I even knew that I needed it! Over a period of 2+
months, 5 work sessions, one take-down and clean-up
day, the following people were front and center with
their ideas, materials, money, time, patience, and help-
ing hands: Karen (eternal thanks for your barn!), Eris,
Pat, Laura Y, Lana, Marge, Marianne, Lori, Lauren (with
AND THE WINNERS ARE
husband Steven and g-daughter Brynli), Linda E, Dale,
Leah, and Laura L. If I missed anyone, I sincerely apolo-
gize. This year we had 48 entrants to sign up and 12 do-
nors who, all added together, allowed us to raise a dona-
tion of $3000 for the library. Marianne, Lori, Marge, and
I met for a wrap-up meeting on 5 Oct to talk about how
things went and to make some notes for next year’s
Stomp. As they say in show business, “It’s a wrap”!

Christmas Market
Remember to wish these lovely ladies a
Happy Birthday
Please let Rita know if you are unable to attend.
Each year during the Christmas Market we work togeth-
er to create beautiful gift baskets to sell in our booth. If
each member donates a few items or asks friends who
are shop owners or crafters (preferably outside of
Dahlonega) for donations, then, during a Crafternoon
session we work to create beautifully decorated, cello-
phane wrapped baskets. The following are some of the
items that have worked well in the past. We are always
open for new suggestions and all your creative ideas.
Spa Basket: decorative soaps, luffa, face masks, bath
salts, towel. Bird Basket – (Already donated – wire feed
block and holder) needed: additional food, anything
decorative with a bird theme. Garden Baskets –
(Already donated – two sets of hand tools, seed packets
and peat pots) needed: kneeling cushions, gardening
journals, gloves, small decorative pots, flower bulbs.
Wine Baskets – (Already donated – one set of wine
glasses, glass charms) another set of wine glasses, stop-
pers, cork screw, wine gift bags, packaged snack crack-
ers, and bottles of wine. Picnic Basket – plastic plates
and cups, plastic wine glasses, bottle of wine, snacks,
tablecloth. BBQ Basket – grill tools, grilling cookbook,
hot pads, apron, drink mugs. Health Basket – teas,
health bars, exercise mat, towel, bath salts. Gourmet
Cook Basket – cook book, kitchen tools, kitchen towel,
apron, hot pads, gourmet salts and spices. Anything
you can do to help would be greatly appreciated. We
are setting up a Sign-Up Genius account to help elimi-
nate duplications of items. That will be sent out to all
members very soon. Next Crafternoon will be on Thurs-
day, October 18th, 1:00 at the Community House. We
will be making decorative bows, so any wired ribbon
you may have would be much appreciated, along with
your wonderful creative, crafty helping hands.

Congratulations to DWC’s dynamic spelling bee team
“The Fruit of the Looms”! Susie Barefoot was the bunch
of grapes, Trish Hawkins was the apple of our eye and
Nellie Medina aka Carmen Miranda with a fruit basket
on her hat was rocking it.
Not only were they great spellers, finishing in second
place, but they won the “Stinger Award” for the best
costume and skit performed to the tune of Copa Cabana.
Ladies you were hilarious! You had the audience falling
in the aisles and laughing until we cried.
You were a fabulous trio and thank you for repre-
senting Dahlonega Woman’s Club in the true spirit of
the Lumpkin Literacy Spelling Bee. Thank you also to
those members who worked behind the scenes and to
those who attended and cheered our team on. WELL
DONE!
