Back Ground • He was Monk • He was one of the first reformers to try and change the church • In the late 1400’s he asked churches to melt all their gold and silver

ornaments so they could feed the poor members of the church by buying bread

Bonfire of Vanities

The Bonfire of Vanities • He convinced to gather jewelry and then burn it• The people made an enormous fire that was known as “ the bonfire of vanities” and they burned everything because they wanted to melt it down and get money for the poor.

Preachings

Preachings • He preached about church officials and why they were corrupt • At first, he was allowed to continue his preachings• Pope Alexander excommunicated him after a while for spreading ideas

that were dangerous

Religious Disunity • He spread his ideas very fast • Since his sermons were very powerful many people followed him

Death• After a while the people of Florence did not like his preaching’s• He was then tried for heresy• He was hanged in Florence in 1498
