Decodes / Deciphers Abbreviations into MeaningsHow to Study in College by Walter Pauk and Ross J. Q. Owens [tenth Edition] -- PDF File http://www.teachersyndicate.com/ttsd/sites/default/files/How%20to%20Study%20in%20College%2010th.pdf The authors recognize abbreviations, as a form of alphabetic shorthand, on the following pages. Page 118 The same applies to historical or cultural references. Many of them have become part of your personal body of knowledge. Authors know this and can use these references as a kind of shorthand to efficiently express complicated ideas in just a word or two. Page 264 Figure 10.15 - List of suggested abbreviations to use

Page 32: Global Education ‐ Helping Students Maximize Their Performance Part 1 - Course Technology Computing Conference

Decodes / Deciphers Abbreviations into MeaningsPage 369 Develop your own abbreviations for words you commonly use. For example, if you’re doing research on earthquakes, you may want to use RS to stand for “Richter scale” and tct plates to abbreviate “tectonic plates.” Be careful not to go overboard with abbreviations, however. Abbreviating words may save you time to begin with, but you don’t want to waste that time later trying to decipher your unfamiliar shorthand. Stanford University recognizes the importance of using abbreviations and symbols and has identified the use of these as Note-Taking Shorthand on their university website -- http://studentaffairs.stanford.edu/oae/schwab/notetaking-shorthand. Because of Stanford's reputation in this area Harvard, Dartmouth and numerous other major universities use Stanford's same information for taking notes. Today My Classroom Notes – Collegiate and My Classroom Notes K - 12 has overcome the decipher objection with digital technology.
