Homes are equipped with multiple devices such as television, audio systems, refrigerators, electronic meter,
etc., and these devices work as a standalone equipment with limited connectivity with other devices or internet.
Smart homes, on the other hand, is an extension to this concept as the equipment are enabled with advanced
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) features.
In a smart home, the owner can easily monitor and control wide range of applications such as lighting control,
access control, fire detection, leak detection, energy efficiency, temperature monitoring, Heating, Ventilation
and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control, automated meter reading, family care, etc. from anywhere in the world
through his/her smartphones or internet.
The installation of smart products in a home provides various benefits which results in savings of time, money
and energy. Moreover, home automation technologies used in smart homes provide intelligent feedback and
information to the owner. For instance, a smart home is capable of watering the plants, feeding the cat, etc.
With increasing burglary cases, consumers are inclining towards smart homes, which include advanced security
systems with cameras, motion sensors and a link to the local police station or a private security company.
Smart homes also use key cards or fingerprint identification in place of conventional locks, making it harder for
someone to break in. However, high initial installation cost, IT security issues and lack of standardization are
some of the major factors restraining the demand for smart homes all across the world.
In Europe, Installation Bus is used as a recognised smart home technology protocol for digital communication
between smart devices.
