Sources of Energy
We use many different energy sources to do work for us. Energy sources are classified into two
groups—nonrenewable and renewable. In the United States, most of our energy comes from
nonrenewable energy sources. Coal, petroleum, natural gas, propane, and uranium are nonrenewable
energy sources. They are used to make electricity, to heat our homes, to move our cars, and to
manufacture all kinds of products.
These energy sources are called nonrenewable because their supplies are limited. Petroleum, for
example, was formed millions of years ago from the remains of ancient sea plants and animals. We
cannot make more petroleum in a short time.
Renewable energy sources include biomass, geothermal energy, hydropower, solar energy, and wind
energy. They are called renewable energy sources because they are replenished in a short time. Day
after day the sun shines, the wind blows, and the rivers flow. We use renewable energy sources mainly
to make electricity.
Electricity is different from the other energy sources because it is a secondary source of energy. We
have to use another energy source to make electricity. In the United States, coal is the number one
energy source for generating electricity.

Teen companies Would you like to win $100,000?
A large company has organized a national competition for
young teenagers. It has given $200 to each group of students
taking part, and the students have set up their own companies.
The objective of the competition is to make money. After six
months, the group with the most money will win the prize of
$100,000. The winners will then make a donation to one or
more of their favorite charities.
“The competition isn’t just about raising money for charity,” says
Bob Franks, the competition organizer. “It’s also a way of
inspiring young people to overcome problems, and be
successful in their working life.”
One group of students at a high school in Iowa has already set
up their company, Sandwiches 4 U. They make and sell
sandwiches to other students at the school. Some of the
teachers have started to buy them, too. The group used their
$200 to buy food, and they have advertised in the school
magazine, and on the school website. “We’ve made some
mistakes, but we’ve learned from them, and now we’re very
successful,” says Gilly, the manager of the company. “Everyone
loves our sandwiches!”

The only country I’ve been to on vacation is
Canada. It was great, but I’m very excited about
going to South Africa. We’re going to spend a
week in Cape Town, and one day we’re going to
go by ferry to a small island called Robben
Island. Nelson Mandela was in prison there.
Bella: I’ve never heard of him. Who is he?
Andy: He was President of South Africa from 1994 to
1999. My dad has read his book, Long Walk To
Freedom. It’s amazing.
Bella: I’ve seen a TV show about extreme sports in
South Africa. Are you going to do anything like
that?
Andy: I’m not, but my cousin, Kyle, is. He’s going to go
bungee jumping at Bloukrans Bridge. The bridge
is 216 meters high, and it’s the highest bungee
jump in the world. Has anyone in your family ever
been bungee jumping?
Bella: No way! It looks too terrifying. What other things
are you going to do on your vacation?
Andy: In our second week, we’re going to visit a
volunteer program. They look after elephants. I
can’t wait because I’ve never seen an elephant.
