are generally true.• The structure is: if + present tense ... present tense
If you cut an onion, it makes you cry.If you are happy, I’m happy.
if - position• An if- clause can come at the beginning or end
of a sentence.• When it comes first, it is often separated by a
comma (,).If you visit London, go to The Natural History

London.
First conditional • We use it when we talk about a particular
condition or situation in the future, and its result.
• There is a real possibility that this condition will happen.
If I see John tomorrow, I’II talk him about it.( = I think, I’ll see him.)
First conditional • The basic pattern for first conditional
sentences is: if + present tense...will + infinitive
without to If you study chemistry, you’ll never stop
learning. If I have time, I’ll clean up the garden.I’ll be sorry if I don’t pass this exam.
Remember• Both parts of a first conditional sentence
talk about the future, even though a present tense is used after if.
• We don’t usually use will after if.If it rains, we’ll have the party indoors.NOT If it will rain, we’ll have the party
indoors.
Unless• We can use unless to mean if ... not.
I run every morning if it isn’t coldOR I run every morning unless it’s cold.
That plant will die if you don’t water it.OR That plant will die unless you water it.
