Global Distribution of GEF Transport Projects

• GEF support for transport project started in 1997;• 64 projects in over 110 cities and 50 countries;• $311million committed, with $5.1 billion leveraged in co-financing.

Asian Sustainable Transport & Urban Development Program

First programmatic approach in the area of transportation

•Agency: Asian Development Bank

•Objective: Support Asian cities in realizing GHG reduction and local co-benefits through the integration of low-carbon transit infrastructure

•Financing: GEF $13.6 million; Co-financing $988 million

•Child Projects:– Bangladesh: Greater Dhaka Sustainable Transport Corridor Project

– China: Jiangxi Fuzhou Urban Integrated Infrastructure Improvement, etc.

– Mongolia: Urban Transport Development Project

•Key result so far: has mobilized other cities in the region to purse low-carbon transit system

GEF support for sustainable transport projects over the next four years (2014-2018)

• Innovative policies and mechanisms for freight and logistics services with the engagement of the private sector

• Urban sustainable transport infrastructure and systems that reduce demand for car travel, including

Road and parking policies and pricing, Zoning and street/urban design codes, and Congestion pricing.
