I am VERY proud of the performance that was put on stage Saturday. I am proud of the chorus and organization that we are building in Tampa. Great days ahead for us with super sounds and experiences. Huge thanks to all of the members for the many ways they showed up on show day. Now let’s continue to spread the word and find some more ‘singers’ to join the fun!!!
Congrats to all and thank you again for your leadership Mr. Roberts!!! ~Tony D., Director
“Enjoyed the concert today very much. Great singing, awesome guest quartets and your wonderful chorus.” ~Anne Rankin, Facebook Friend
Tony, Thank You for a wonderful day. You are always the performer but what you gave to the chorus was a magical ‘leadership’ performance, all day long.
We have come to expect audience remarks that are glowing in their appreciation but some comments this year from experienced barbershoppers were exceptional. One that really stuck was ‘I just couldn’t believe how beautiful the chorus made the music’.
Tony, that is all to your credit. You have made it exciting to rehearse, to perform, to compete and I can’t thank you enough. ~Dave Roberts, President

Heralds of Harmony
History

RN
ER
On May 29, 1945, Tampa #1 was chartered with the Barbershop Society with 44 members and was the first chapter in the Dixie District.
Why is this important? We have a big birthday coming up in 2015. The Tampa Bay Heralds of Harmony will be 70 years old; so let’s plan a huge birthday party!
You can read all about our Charter on the website, “Our History” (on the blue bar); click on the 1940’s, then click on 1945.

There’s a lot more folks involved in the support of our website and that is the way it should be. In the beginning, I loaded the website with the music and membership data as a demonstration to the Board. But once the Board approved, then this data was ‘live’ and remained in place. John Pennington then signed on to handle the input of new music and new members and provided valuable insight on ‘how things worked.’ He provided new roles and responsibilities which continue to serve us today. Larry Clapp researched the communication function of the site and supports it as well.
After about a year, the public side of the website was developed. We had a support team from Groupanizer develop the framework for the public side; and I continue to support it along with help from Roxanne Clapp in the graphics design. If you find anything attractive about the site, it is her work. My input is the functional part.
At the beginning of this year, we decided to make some changes in how the website information is supported. The website was aligned by function and mapped to responsibilities of members of the Board, with one exception, the development of the Valentine Program support was done by Rod Rodrigues. Chuck Steiner, along with Ed McKenzie, supports the “Calendar” and “Music” functions. This is a huge effort and has forever changed the responsibilities of Music Administration.

The support of Membership Administration is now handled by our Secretary, Brian Wunderlin. Each member can and should support his own profile information; but Brian is there to assist. Each new member is added by Brian.
Brian also supports the link to the “Weebly” website that contains our rehearsal and show videos.
I still support the front page and all the public information on the website. To summarize:

From the Presidentby Dave Roberts, Tenor
The following is my status report to the Board. I thought that I would share it with you in my ‘From the President’ column.
Last month, I received a suggestion from our Secretary, Brian Wunderlin, to share my view of how things are going with the Chapter operations; so this month, I thought I would take him up on his suggestion. I don’t intend to make you suffer each month by having to read some of my thoughts; and some of you definitely need a break, like Chuck, as you already get endless suggestions from me. I definitely have the advantage, as I spend a good part of my day thinking about the Heralds and what it would take to continuously improve everything about us. Sometimes, I have actual work to do for the Heralds!
First, we as the Board of Directors, along with our musical leaders, can be pleased on how we have progressed. Each of you have stepped up to your assignments and produced noticeable results. As we look at year-to-year comparisons, we can see that we are continuing to improve on all levels.
Ed McKenzie took on the Valentine Program and doubled the revenue. He also increased the profit; plus, we have ‘paid for’ inventory that will be used in 2015.
The Music Team introduced two songs through June, 2013, versus four through June, 2014; plus a new section of “God Bless the USA.” And, in six short months, we improved our contest score 22 points. In so doing, we won the District Championship for the 10th time. The Show Team put on an outstanding annual show which produced a profit of an estimated $10,000. Last year’s show profit was $3,472. Ed McKenzie, our Music Administrator, has put in place a process to not only get us legal in our copyrights and licenses, but to keep us legal. Our song learning process has been improved thanks to the efforts of Chuck Steiner and Joe McCarthy. We should be very pleased with our results.
The Membership Team has added six new members, plus one returning member to our roll. They are Bill Glasgow, Rob Hargen, Bob Slaney, Paul Stiles, Nick Nicosia, Shane Scott and Gregg Hunsberger. These seven new Heralds represent 14% of our active singers.
Our Money Team has improved every metric. Year-to-year, ticket and Valentine sales are up and show program revenue increased five-fold.
All Chapter legal requirements have been met by Secretary, Brian Wunderlin, and Treasurer, Al Kelly. Our thanks to you both.
Our Events V.P., Dick Sipple, provided his magic by completing uniforms for various members at our Spring Contest. He has built stage props that added decor to our show performances. He has saved us money by closing the outside storage unit which was costing us $100 per month.
Our TPCC liaison, Steve Cragg, continues to provide guidance to the Board keeping us apprised of the Church leadership’s thoughts
regarding the Heralds. Tickets for our June 29 show for the Church were offered to the congregation this past weekend and were gone in twenty minutes.
Steve Matheson, in his Marketing Program is doing an outstanding job. Advertising for the annual show produced up to 60 new patrons. The dynamic part of this is these new patrons saw an outstanding show; and I am certain they will invite their friends to our Christmas shows.
So, in my opinion, we are having a very good year.
However, we do have challenges ahead. Musically, the combined chorus for the Fall Convention, plus the three Christmas shows, will be another ‘step up’ in performance opportunity. I am sure there will be new songs to learn.
In membership, we need to continue to recruit, and we have tremendous opportunity with our performance lineup. A chorus that continues to improve will attract good singers. We need them on board to help us with contest and with our shows.
Money and budget will be the challenge. We are down on our budgeted revenue by about $6,000 at this point in time. We lost a budgeted show for $6,500; so, Steve Stenzler and his team have some work to do. I know he has opportunity with our “Friends of the Heralds” Program, a repeat performance of show program ads, our County grant, and sell-outs of our Christmas USF shows.
We will continue to support Steve Matheson’s marketing efforts and that takes money. We will have to adjust our spending budget accordingly.
As for the future, in October, we will again meet as a Board to plan 2015. I have begun assembling the ‘singing’ events. It is very preliminary, so treat it as such, and I will end my report with this list.

Rehearsal Note Summary
(Continued on next page)
Active HoH Members, watch your inbox for weekly rehearsal notes sent out by The Colonel, Russ Powell.
Rehearsal Notes, May 19, 2014aFantastic, Exhilarating, Energetic Rehearsal. “It’s Great to be a Barbershopper!!”
aFollow the Director. Shane demonstrated how important it is to pay attention to the guy in front. With his creative pauses in “Keep The Whole World Singing,” some guys finished the song before he did. Keep your eyes on the director and the director’s hands. Tony gives us great cues; great musical cues and great emotional cues. Watch for entrances and releases. A good release is like throwing a bird in the air that just soars away from you.
aMelodic singer. Be aware of the melody. Making music together is more than just singing your part or singing an isolated note in the chord. Be aware of how your placement and volume adjustments affect the overall sound complexion of each passage. Tune into the melody all the time. Be a melodic singer along with the lead.
aSell tickets. Don’t give up on your customers. You are doing them a favor. You are providing them a great service. Remind them, again. You are giving them an opportunity to experience a show that will be an event to behold. Sell, sell, sell right up until show time.
aShow order.
First half (8 songs) “Show Me Where the Good Times Are,” “Slow Boat to China,” “ Twilight Time,” “Tonight,” “Drunken Sailor,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “Strike Up the Band,” and “Smile.”
Second half (5 songs) “Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless the U.S.A.,” “Armed Forces Medley,” “The Lord Bless and Keep You,” God Bless America.”
aKeep presenting, keep presenting all the time, even when you are not singing. Who? Me? Yes, You!
aa Next rehearsal. Wednesday, May 28. Early-bird choreo, 6:15 p.m. Preparation. Make sure you are qualified on all the 13 show songs. Check on Groupanizer or with your section leader. Sing each song at least two times between now and next rehearsal to keep them fresh and performance-ready. Continue practicing choreo in mirror. Start practicing the songs in show order.
Rehearsal Notes, May 28, 2014.Our performance celebration is quickly approaching. Now is our opportunity to show the audience how good we are and how much we have improved since the last time they heard the Heralds. Remember to HYDRATE, stay focused, remain in the moment, and
most importantly, have fun.
a”The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” Continue selling. When there are twelve “Amens,” each one has to be different or we will lose our audience. Continue to engage the audience by making each repeated word even more interesting than the previous word. Each part has exciting moving notes that need to be brought out and embellished to hold audience attention.
aMake The Change. When a vocal or performance ‘note’ is given or when Tony requests that we change the way we are singing something, make the fix right away. Our role is not to question the request, but to implement it immediately, on the spot, using our wide range of skills!! Tony can then give us feedback for further modification. If Tony requests a change, and no change occurs, then the whole process is pointless. An “A Chorus” is immediately responsive to these requests. A “B Chorus” thinks that the director must be talking to someone else on the risers. Assume it is YOU, and do something different to make the change.
aShoe in the Dryer. Rhythm unsteady in ‘Show Me.’ Avoid the Shoe in the dryer or the three-legged goat syndrome. Keep the tempo even. Thank you, Basses, for a steady meter.
aNo wondering eyes, please. All eyes on Tony when applicable. If his shoulders are square to us, then most likely we are to be looking his way. Aye, aye!!
aSaturday show production schedule. 11:30 a.m. call. Drop stuff in dressing room. 12 Noon meet in Choir Room for warmups. Casual dress. 1-2 p.m. on stage for run-throughs. 2 p.m. released to get dressed. 2:45 p.m. back in Choir Room ready for show. (2:40 p.m. Basses with Chris in Choir Room.)
Note from Chuck: Upon arrival at the venue, please hang out in the dressing room or rehearsal room. Guys are busy on stage making last minute preparations and prefer not to be distracted by additional traffic. Thanks.
No Rehearsal June 2, 2014
Rehearsal Notes, June 9, 2014aGuest night. 33 guests!! Wow!!! By all accounts, this was very successful. The guests got a sampling of what it is like to sing in a large competitive chorus. It is always exciting to see this many guests participating; and, hopefully, many will return inspired by their motivation to be part of something greater than themselves. Being in a semi-professional show chorus could be the opportunity of a lifetime. Show that we have a lot of fun together as we continue to get better and better. Hope to see many back next week.
aRiser Buddy. Each new singer will be paired with a designated riser buddy to introduce him to our culture and show him what it means to be a Herald. Our culture has a mighty steep learning curve
The Tampa HERALD Page 12 June 2014
even for the most accomplished singers. Be mindful that life is an incredible balancing act and our guests are trying to determine if this is something they want to add to their already busy schedule. Being a good riser buddy helps the process and makes it easier for them to make a positive decision to join and flourish in our ranks: A cheerful greeting, a welcoming smile, a bit of encouragement, showing that you care, making sure they have music, making room for them on the risers with their own window, the qualification process, our website, being attentive to their questions and needs. The Herald’s expectation level is really pretty high and a good riser buddy will make it less overwhelming.
aQualification. Leads are leading. The leads have demonstrated that we don’t have to wait until the last microsecond to get qualified on new music. Why not get the process started sooner rather than later? It all started with a challenge from Larry. This is probably some kind
of record. It is pretty remarkable that all the leads qualified on new music in approximately one week. A precedent has been set. So do it now already, and don’t be a July straggler. Get qualified now so that you can begin to help the Heralds make music together.
aConversational singing. It is all about sound production and good vocal technique with the lyrical message always in mind. The focus should never be showing off your voice; the focus should be telling a story as you would speak it. The focus should be the lyrical message of the song and not the messenger.
Next week. Continue work on “First Hello,” plus prep for June 29 show. Focus on patriotic set: “Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America,” Armed Forces Medley,” “God Bless the U.S.A.” In addition, review “Drunken Sailor,” “ Tonight,” “Strike Up the Band,” “ I’ll Be Seeing You,” “Twilight Time,” ‘Show Me,’ “Smile,” “The Lord Bless and Keep You.”

Rehearsal Note Summary
LEADing the Pack
Larry Clapp challenged all Leads to spend their recent Monday night off from rehearsal working on the new song, “From the First Hello To the Last Goodbye,” and submit a qualifier recording by Saturday the 7th. They did it!!! All Leads were qualified by the next rehearsal, Monday, June 9th. Will the rest of the chorus be qualified by the next rehearsal?!? THAT would be cool.
Maybe we could have a prize?!....

The Healthy HeraldPerformance Postureby Dan McFarlane, Tenor
Have you ever heard the expression, “An audience listens with its eyes?”
In 1971, a University of California professor named Dr. Albert Mehrabian published the results of a study to learn how speakers affect listeners. An audience only listens to a speaker when they feel comfortable with him or her. (Think of how hard it was in school to pay attention to a teacher you didn’t like.)
Mehrabian’s study showed that the words the speaker said accounted for only 7% of the audience’s comfort level with the speaker. The speaker’s tone of voice created 38% of the influence, but a whopping 55% of the reason an audience liked a speaker was a result of what the speaker looked like. He further found that if the words and the tone of voice were inconsistent with the speaker’s body language, the listener would believe the body language.
These findings make a strong statement about the importance of your nonverbal message. The way you carry yourself when you walk into a room or stand up to speak, makes an impression of one kind or another.
If your audience’s first impression of you is favorable, they will be favorably disposed to listen to you right from the start. If, on the other hand, you present an unappealing first impression, you will have created an obstacle between yourself and your listeners which must be overcome before they will give you their attention. Your listeners are unlikely to make the effort to overcome that barrier, so you will have made your own job a lot harder. By starting with an appealing “look,” you tip the scales of acceptance in your favor.
Most of us spend a lot of time sitting at computers or at the wheel of a car. Have you noticed that in
those situations we often sit with our chin poked forward and our chest sagging? Did you know that your head weighs from 12 to 14 pounds? Think of the strain that chin-forward position puts on the muscles at the back of your neck! It’s little wonder we get headaches and backaches!
Here’s a quick way to get the feel of good posture:
1. Look at the ceiling and point at it. Stretch your arms up as if you want to touch the ceiling.
2. Bring your arms down to your sides as if they were going to be a stripe down the sides of your pants. Don’t let your chest sag.
3. Bring your eyes level.
4. Drop your shoulders.
You are now standing with good posture.
Your posture speaks to your listeners. Upright posture is the most important element in good stage presence. Good posture radiates confidence. It says that you are sure of yourself and that you have something worthwhile to say, something worth listening to.
Your posture can make people sit up and take notice, or it can turn people off. Good posture is important not just for the visual impression you make, but for making the most of your voice and for improving your general health. Your body was designed to stand tall. What’s more, according to the “act as if” principle, simply standing with confident-looking posture will make you FEEL more confident.
