100,000 slaves united to
fight for freedom.
They were led by
Toussaint L’Ouverture, a
former slave.

France sent soldiers to
deal with the situation.
L’Ouverture was caught
and imprisoned in
France where he died.

In spite of his capture,
with all that France
was already dealing
with, France was
unable to defeat the
rebellion even though
they captured the
leader.
Haiti declared its independence. It is the ONLY successful slave revolt in history.
Unfortunately, today Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and an earthquake destroyed much of the country a few years ago.
