A Little Bit About Me This will be my 11th year teaching I began my teaching career in Annapolis, MD teaching 3rd grade in an
inner city school. From there my family and I moved around a little bit until we called
Georgia home. I taught 1st and 3rd grade in Richmond, VA. We then moved to Stoughton, Massachusetts where I taught 2nd
grade. Finally we moved to Georgia where I spent 4 years at King Springs
Elementary before transferring to Powers Ferry last year to be closer to my home.

Hands-on Learning With FractionsToday’s Objectives- 1. We are going to discuss the new resource
Hands-On Standards Common Core Fractions2. We will also discuss ways to teach fractions hands-on with manipulatives that you should be receiving 3. We will also learn fantastic resources you can use to help you teach fractions successfully

Opening Activity- Let’s Take a Poll Use your SMARTPHONES and follow the directions on the Poll slide!
Question- In what ways do you already use manipulatives when you teach your fractions unit?
*Try to be brief and tell us what manipulatives you use!

Why Hands-On Learning? Here is a short video that explains a little bit about why using those
hands-on activities in your classroom is so beneficial to student success.
• The lessons are aligned with Common Core State Standards, which as you know, Georgia is no longer using. However, our fractions standards with the Georgia Performance Standards of Excellence are similar. **In your packet you will see the comparison of both CCSS and GPSE**
• The hands-on lessons in this book were created with differentiation in mind.
• Each lesson will list all materials and resources that you will need, and will have vocabulary, a warm-up, skill practice, guided practice, remediation, independent practice,
enrichment, and assessments.

• Each unit in this Hands-On Standards, Common Core Fractions book includes Game Play suggestions, and at least one Fractions ExplorAction lab.
• This lab will give students an opportunity to explore a topic further

* Geoboard- This is a plastic square that has two sides. One side has a 5x5-pin grid, while the other side has a circle with a 12-pin circumference. Students use rubber bands to create form geometric shapes. The geoboard can be used to teach symmetry, geometric shapes, congruency, partitioning, area, and perimeter.
* Cuisenaire Rods- This set has 10 rods of different colors. Each color corresponds to a different length. These rods allow students to explore math concepts. You can use them to teach addition, patterning, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals, as well as data analysis.
* Deluxe Rainbow Fraction Circles- This set has 9 color-coded plastic circles. Each color represents a different fraction from one whole circle to halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eights, tenths, and twelfths. You can use these circles to explore fractions, equivalent fractions, and more.
Fraction Towers- These cubes will snap together to show students fractions as well as decimals and more higher level math concepts. These towers can be used to show the fractional parts of halves all the way up to twelfths. You can also use them for equivalent fractions.
Fraction Number Lines- These are double-sided number lines that can be paired with the Fraction Towers.
Dual-Scale Ruler- These rulers have both inches and centimeters.

1. Think- We already got together earlier with our opening poll thinking about how we already use manipulatives in our fractions lessons. Now, I challenge you to think about how either the Fraction Resource Book you will receive and the resources that you already know of or learned today, and think about how you can add more hands-on learning in your classroom.
2. Pair- Get together in groups of 3-4 people and discuss any ideas that you may have in ways you can teach your students using a more hands-on approach. I will give you some paper to jot your ideas down.
3. Share- We will take a few minutes to share some of your ideas. Before you leave please write down your Cobb County email, and I will create a folder of all the ideas from all three sessions and I will share them with you!
