ThecompanionHRSWI8amplifierisdesigned to supply speaker-level power to the HRSIW8 in-wall subwoofer, to producestunninglowfrequencyeffectsforyourhometheater.
This guide gives an overview of the featuresofyoursubwoofer.Furtherdetails of the system are supplied in themanualprovidedwiththeSunfireHRSIW8amplifier.

1. BindingPostsThe subwoofer has one pair of bind-ingpostsforconnectionwithspeakerwiretotheoutputpostsoftheSunfireHRSIW8amplifier.
Alwaysusehighqualityconnectionsand speaker wires, and make sure therearenoloosefittingsorstraywirestrands.Thespringconnectionsacceptbarewireorpins.
Connectthepositivespeaker-leveloutputoftheHRSIW8amplifiertothepositive(red)inputofthesubwoofer.Connectthenegativespeaker-leveloutputoftheHRSIW8amplifiertothenegative(black)inputofthesubwoofer.
Make sure that the positive and nega-tiveconnectionsdonottouch,orthismaydamageyourpoweramplifier.
2. SpeakerWireChannelTo ease installation, the speaker wiring arepassedthroughthesechannelstothebindingposts.Thisisrecom-mendedasthechannelwillsupporttheweightofthespeakercable,soitdoesnotpullonthebindingposts.
3. ClampsOncethesubwooferispressedintoanopeninginthesheetrock,screwson the front panel are turned to pull theclampsoutanddowntopressagainstthesheetrock,andsecurethesubwooferinplace.

5. ClampScrewsThesesixscrewsareusedtoclamptheloudspeakerinplaceonceithasbeenpressedintothesheetrockopeningofyourwall.

7. GrilleTo remove the grille, gently pry it away fromthecornersandreleaseitfromthemagnetsholdingitinplace.Thegrillcanbepaintedtomatchtheroomdecor.

The suggestions below will typi-callyresultinoutstandingperformance.However,althoughlowfrequenciesarenon-directional,factorssuchasroomreflections,standingwaves,resonanceandabsorptionwillstronglyaffectyoursubwoofer’sperformance.
SinceyourSunfiresubwooferisde-signed to be professionally installed into yourwall,engineeringservicesfromyourauthorizedSunfiredealerand/oroutsideacousticalresourcesshouldbeconsid-eredtoensureoptimumperformance.
TheSunfireHRSIW8amplifier’sDSPfeatures will tailor the sound to the room foroptimumperformanceinthelocationyouchoose.Controlsincludethecross-overfrequency,andslope,phase,andsubsonicfilter
Keep the subwoofer at least two or three feet away from any TVscreen,computer,VCRormagnetictapesanddiscs.Thiswill
reducethechanceofthemagneticfieldsupsettingtheTVscreenorerasingyourmagneticmedia.
LocationPreliminary
Beforecuttingaholeinyourwall,itisalways best to test the subwoofer in that locationfirst.Placeitonthefloorneartothe"possible"location,andconnectittotheSunfireHRSIW8amplifier.Playsometypicalbasspassagesthroughthesubwoofer.Thiswillhelpyouidentifyany problems in the sound due to the location,andyoumaybeabletofindalocationthatsoundsbetter.

wall,towardsthecornerwillreinforcethelowfrequencies.Thisisbestsuitedfor:
• Rooms larger than �00 square feet where a single subwoofer will be used
• Fordedicatedhometheaters
• For listeners who enjoy “heavy” bass.

CenterlocationInstallingthesubwooferclosertothecenterofthefrontwallwillstillprovideadequate
bass,butwilltendtobeless“heavy”andsomewhattighter.Thisisideallysuitedfor:
• For rooms smaller than �00 square feet
• Dedicatedmusiclisteningrooms.

Using Two SubwoofersIfyouwishtousetwosubwoofers,thesoundoutputwilldouble.Eachsubwooferwill
needitsowndedicatedSunfireHRSIW8amplifier.
Locatingthesubwoofersonthefrontwall,withonetowardseachcornerwillprovidemoreflexibilityincrossoverpoints,withoutcausinglocalizationthatcanhappenwithsubwooferslocatedonsideandrearwalls.Sunfirepreamplifiersandreceiversfeaturemultiplesubwooferoutputsfortheseapplications.Ifyourpreamplifierhasasinglesub/LFEoutput,useaYcabletosplititintotwooutputs,oneforeachamplifier.

Installation ReadandfollowallinstructionsandallimportantsafetyinstructionsintheHRSIW8amplifiermanual.Here follows a summary of the amplifierinstallationnotes:
• Theamplifiermayberackmountedusingthesuppliedrackears.Itwillfitintoastandard1U,19inchrackspace.Allowaminimumof1freerackspaceaboveandbelowforventilation.Thisisveryimportant.
• Theamplifiermayalsobeplacedonashelf,supportedonitsfeet.Makesureitisnotplacedoncar-petingorsimilarthatmayobscureitsventilationopenings.
• Neveropentheamplifiercabinetasthismightresultinanelectricalshocktoyou,ordamagetotheunit.Therearenouser-servicablecomponentsinside.
• Protecttheamplifierfromprolongedexposuretodirectsunlightandotherdirectsourcesofheat,suchasheatingventsandradiators.
• Topreventfireorshock,donotexposetheamplifierorsubwoofertorainormoisture.Iffluidorafor-eignobjectshouldentereitherunit,immediately turn off the power and contactyourSunfireDealer.
• Avoidexcessiveexposureto extremecoldordust.
• Donotplaceheavyobjectsontopoftheamplifier.
Heat rise• Allow adequate ventilation around
thetopandsidesoftheamplifier.
• Allow adequate ventilation if you arerack-mountingtheamplifier.
AC Power ConsiderationsEnsurethattheamplifierispluggedinto
anoutletcapableofsupplyingthecorrectvoltagespecifiedforyourmodel.
Unplugyouramplifier’spowercordfromtheelectricaloutletifitwillbeleftunusedforalongperiodoftime.
Routethepower-supplycordsoitisnotlikelytobewalkedonorpinchedbyitemsplaceduponoragainstit,especiallyatplugs,conveniencereceptacles,andthepointwhereitexitsfromtheunit.
Beforemakingorchanginganyconnections,ALWAYSmakesurethattheamplifierandyourothercomponentsareturnedOFF.Alsoturndownthevolumecontrolofthesubwooferamplifierandyourpreamplifierorreceiver.
SpeakerLevelconnectionsTheamplifier’sspeakerleveloutputs
canacceptspeakerwireswithbanana,dual-banana, bare wire, pins or spade terminals.Ifyouhavebananatypecon-nectorsonyourspeakerwire,makesurethat you tighten the binding posts before inserting.
Make sure that the negative speaker wiresnevertouchthepositivewiresasthis will short out and possibly damage youramplifier.
MagneticFieldsWerecommendthatyouplaceyour
subwoofer further than two feet away fromyourTV,VCR,tapedeckorcom-puter, so the speaker’s magnet won’t distortthecolorsofyourTVpictureorerase your video tapes, audio tapes or computerdiscs.

Read the details on page 7 to help determine the best position for your subwooferintheroom.
Thesubwoofercanbewallmountedvertically,centeredbetweenverticalwallstuds.Thisistherecommended(andeasiest)orientationtoinstall.
Horizontal mounting into existing constructionwillmostlikelymeancuttingaverticalstud.Thisinstallationshouldbedonebyanexperiencedandqualifiedcarpenter,topreventweakeningthewallstructure.Whentheextraframingis done, the installation and wiring is the sameasdescribedbelow.
Tools required:• Phillipsscrewdriver• Pencilorothersuitablewallmarker• Sheetrockhandsaw• Safety glasses• Level• Masking tape• Flashlight• Small mirror• Electronicstudfinderifneeded• Youmayneedanassistant.
Preliminary steps:• IftheTVdisplayisinplacenearby,
it should be removed from the wall, oratleastturnedoffandcovered.
• Clear the area where you are going towork,soitwillbesafe.Removeanyfragileobjects,smallchildrenorpets,andcoveranythingthatmightbeaffectedbydustfromcut-tingsheetrock.
• Putonyoursafetyglasses.
Subwoofer InstallationMarkingandcuttingtheopening
1. Choosethebestlocationforyoursubwoofer,preferablycenteredbetweenverticalwallstuds.Useastudfindertofindwherethestudsare.
Do not position the subwoofer closerthanoneinchfromthecabi-netsidestoastud.Thisallowsfortheclampstoswingout.
2. Tapethesuppliedcutouttemplateontothewallsurface,andusealeveltomakesureitisvertical.
3. Markthesheetrockwithapencilaround the inside of the template, andremovethetemplate.
4.Turnofftheelectricitytotheroom,justincaseyouaccidentlycutaliveACmainswire.
5. Drillasmallpilothole,andus-ingaflashlightandsmallmirror,lookforanyobstructionssuchaswaterpipes,gaslines,orelectricalwires that may interfere with the subwooferinstallation.
6. Ifallisclear,carefullycutoutthesheetrockaroundthemarkedlines,and remove any debris from the hole.

WiringTheHRSIW8amplifierhastwobinding
postsforconnectiontotheHRSIW8subwoofer.
1. Installthespeakerwiresfollowingalllocalcodesforlowvoltageelec-tricalwiringinstallation.Useclass2wiring,and12gaugeisrecom-mended,16gaugeistheminimum.
2. Followcommonlowvoltagepractic-eslikeavoidinghighvoltageelectri-calwiring,orifthisisnotpossible,trycrossingthemperpendicularly.Thiswillreducethechanceofpick-inguphumorotherinterference.
3. Ifrequired,passthewiringthroughthespeakerwiringchannelsinthebackofthesubwoofer.
4. Doanelectricalcontinuitytesttomakesuretheconnectionsaregoodfromtheamplifier-endofthespeaker wire to the ends of the wiresatthesubwoofer.
5. Securethewiringtotheloudspeak-er's spring-loaded binding posts, observingthecorrectpolarity.Gentlypullonthemtomakesuretheyaresecure.
6. Itisagoodideatosecurethewiringfromvibrationasmuchaspossible.Donothavetheweightofthecableshangingonthetermi-nals.Tryusingheavydutyelectricalstaplestoholdthespeakercablesecurelytothestuds.
Installing the Subwoofer 1. Pressthesubwooferintothesheet-
rockopeningmakingsurethatthespeakerwiresdonotgetpinchedorcut.

2. Screwinthesixclampscrews.Asthescrewturnsclockwise,aclamprotates out and presses onto the backofthesheetrocktoholdthesubwooferfirmlyinplace.
Tightentheclampssotheyaresnug, but do not overtighten, as theycoulddamagethesheetrock.

Final steps 1. Addthegrilletocoverandprotect
thewoofers.
2. Thegrillcanbepaintedifdesired,and this best done when it is not attachedtothesubwoofer.

TroubleshootingThe HRSIW8 subwoofer is designed
and built to provide years of trouble-free performance.Mostproblemsthatoccurcanusuallybesolvedbycheckingyoursetup,orbymakingsureallcomponentsarefullyoperational.
The following information will help you dealwithcommonproblemsyoumayexperience.Ifaproblempersists,pleasecontactyourDealerforassistance.
Poor or no sound • Checkalltheconnectionsfromthe
subwoofertotheamplifier.
• The speaker is designed to be powered onlybytheSunfireHRSIW8amplifier.Nootheramplifiershouldbeusedastheperfomancewillsuffer,andpossibledamagetothespeakerwilloccur.
• Checkthattheamplifierisnotdriventoohard.
• Manyprocessor/preampscansendtest tones through all the loudspeakers inyoursystem.Usethistoadjustthevolumeofeachchanneluntiltheyareallplayingatthesamelevel.Makesurethat any bass management options are setcorrectly.
• If the system bass is weak only when playingsurroundsources,checkthatyourprocessoriscorrectlysettodecodethesurroundmodes,suchasDolbyDigitalorDTS.
• SomeDVDdiscshaveamenuthatallowsyoutoselectwhichsoundtracktoplay.Checkthatthecorrectsurroundaudiosoundtrackisselected.
