ASSEMBLIES— World Book Week
In assemblies this week Miss Birch talked about the joy of reading and how it can
open up new worlds for the reader. This transformative power that books can
have was further illustrated by a short film from Book Aid International, the
charity which we collect for on our Dress-up Day. The students watched a 13-
year old girl called Rahmatu explain how books have changed her life and given
her a brighter future with dreams of becoming a lawyer. Each day a member of
staff from another department shared their love of reading too; thanks go to Miss
Smith, Miss Cihigoyenetche and Mrs Simpson for showing that it's not just English
teachers who love to read!
Year 11
To recognise the hard work of the students in the run-up to PPEs and the final
exams, we provided them with a free breakfast to celebrate their efforts. Well
done. Keep it going. It will be worth it.
Year 12
Ms Owen encouraged students to start thinking out their next steps after the
Sixth Form. If students are thinking about university they should start researching
into possible universities / courses now in preparation for applying this
September. If students are not sure what they wish to do, or if they do not want
to go to university they should make an appointment to see our Careers Advisor
Mrs Hayes for a 1-1, or take a look at the website notgoingtouni.co.uk for further
ideas / information.

confirmed that Student Finance Applications for all students planning on starting
university in September 2017 are now open. More information can be

Tonight is the PTA Year 7 disco fundraiser, including glitter face-painting. The
students should have a brilliant time!
VISITS AND TRIPS
Twelfth Night
On Wednesday, Year 13 A-level Drama went to
see the highly acclaimed production of
Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the National
Theatre, as part of their exam preparations.
This was a very visionary performance, which
excited and engaged a 21st
Century audience. It
was true to its original script but utilised all of
the modern production values, in particular a
set that continued to amaze by its
flexible use. This production had modern costume, live music, hot tubs, rain and even
cars and mopeds driving across the stage! Everyone had a very enjoyable evening.
Book Week—Author visit and other events
On Wednesday we were delighted to welcome popular writer Jenny McLachlan back to
Hillview to run some creative writing workshops with Year 7. In the Romance work-
shops the students plotted a whole book in an hour from the first meeting to the final
"fireworks" moment complete with glitter and feathers. Some of their ideas were so
good Jenny might be using them in her next book! In the Comedy Writing workshop
the students learnt how to use incongruity, the element of surprise and the Rule of 3
to successfully make the reader laugh, and were shown the importance of word choice
and sticking to things which could really happen too. Well done to those 6 students
to whom Jenny gave one of her books as a prize for their great contributions.
STARS IN THEIR EYES
From voting held in mentor groups this week to ascertain which children’s book was
the favourite amongst students—the results are as follows:
1. Winnie the Pooh
2. We’re going on a Bear Hunt
3. Matilda
4. The Tiger Who Came to Tea
5. Rainbow Fairies
6. The Gruffalo
7. Room on the Broom
8. Hairy McLary/Mr Men (tied)
9. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Celebrating World Book Day in Costume
The Science department’s
decorative theme was ‘Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory’. The
top student from each lesson
throughout the day was awarded
a "Golden ticket". The student
then took the golden ticket to
"Bill's Candy" store (the Prep
room) where they exchanged the
ticket for a Wonka Bar!
The judging of costumes by Mrs Burkett took place in the hall at lunchtime:
Best Newcomer: Shannon Matthews as the Queen of Hearts from Alice’s
Adventures in Wonderland
Best Pair: Katie Flynn and Megan Fransen as Tweedle Dee and Dum
Best Group: Phoebe Fillery and Emma Colville as Peculiar Children
Best Sixth Former: Rayan Choudhury as the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz
Best Individual: Robyn Haim as Jekyll and Hyde
Best Staff Group: The Exams Office (Mrs Foreman, Mrs Culmer, Mrs Blacklee and
Mrs Russell) as Cinderella and the Ugly Sisters
Finally, thanks must go to Mrs Quinnell and Ms V Birch for organising the day and
making things run smoothly.
