line approach – economy, society and environment – to create added value for all stakeholders.
Holcim’s key objective is the creation of value. By taking a holistic approach, the company’s long-term success is secured. The basis for this is exceptional operational performance and a solid return on the capital invested.
The most important foundation, upon which everything rests, is a workforce that gives its best. Aiming to maintain a balanced portfolio, Holcim’s strategy is based on continuous growth in both developed economies and emerging, high-growth
markets, where around three-quarters of operational capacity is based, accounting for almost half of the Group’s net sales.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index highlighted Holcim as ‘Leader of the Industry’ for four consecutive years (2005-08). Holcim was recognised as having the best sustainability performance in the global building materials industry.
Thanks to its market-oriented structures, product innovations, skilled employees, and efficient environmental management systems, Holcim is in a strong position to build on its heritage of success, now and in the years to come.

Holcim expanded its reach in South East Asia in 1999 with the takeover of Tenggara Cement in Johor, Malaysia – renaming the company as Holcim Malaysia. In subsequent years the business was transformed to align all processes and quality standards with the Holcim Group.
Our Local Presence: Holcim in Malaysia
The acquisition was timely, with developments in the state resulting in the creation of the Iskandar Economic Region in 2006. Holcim has since focused on gaining a strong foothold in the southern region, expanding its presence in Johor and becoming one the area’s largest cement and construction materials companies.
In 2011, Holcim was certified as Malaysia’s first ‘green’ cement manufacturer by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM), securing the prestigious international eco-label certification for Holcim Top Standard and Holcim Duracem. Thus a precedent was established – a new strategy focused on sustainability that would guide the company’s future development.
In 2012, Holcim Malaysia expanded it’s portfolio into aggregates and further enhanced its service
with the introduction of iShop, Mobile Labs, and a specialist Large Infrastructure Projects (LIP) team to pioneer innovative solutions for customers, as part of the company’s new direction to become a trusted solutions provider.
Today, Holcim Malaysia aspires to be recognised as the industry’s most responsible and sustainable construction materials company, and the government’s consultant in developing low-carbon cities and implementing sustainable development.
Taking a leading role in promoting sustainable development, Holcim Malaysia is undergoing a strategic market repositioning, creating a premium range of sustainable products, services, and solutions designed for specific applications. This will deliver better value for clients – assisting in the timely completion of projects and in meeting the highest construction quality and safety standards.

2 Enhancing operational efficiency is one of Holcim’s key priorities. Simply put, this means doing more with less – which is good for the environment and good for our customers. This involves providing sustainable responses to needs arising from the changing business landscape.
In line with this philosophy, Holcim has migrated to a state-of-the-art seamless single technological platform that interconnects GPS, SAP, RFI, and bar-coding to minimise errors and duplication, while ensuring a high level of accuracy throughout the process.
The company continues to invest in new technologies, systems, and infrastructure while developing and cultivating talent. This
approach to innovation permeates the entire organisation and is ingrained in its culture, enabling optimum performance.
Building on this, Holcim supplies dynamic logistical solutions to suit the specific needs of clients and their projects, particularly offshore engagements where the complexity of the environment highlights the value of advanced logistics capabilities.
“ We always work to anticipate what is coming

20 Petronas Regasification Terminal
“ Holcim has been a great partner – able to
deliver where others simply could not. Their
sales team went to extraordinary lengths to
understand and accommodate our needs. ”
Stephen Yoong Managing Director of Durable Mix Sdn Bhd
The ClientDurable Mix Sdn Bhd was contracted
in 2010 to supply all the project’s
concrete and cement requirements.
Stephen Yoong, the managing director,
today buys 95 percent of Duramix’s
supply from Holcim.
The ChallengeAs an offshore construction project,
the biggest challenge was logistical.
The supplier needed to ensure concrete
and cement were readily available on
site, round the clock. Being situated 8
kilometres offshore, simply reaching
the site posed challenges.
Holcim’s Solution:Holcim assisted Durable Mix in the
timely completion of this project
through:
• Accurate and efficient project
management and logistics to
ensure optimal consistency in the
supply of the floating plants.
• Sophisticated logistical planning
and production mapping, which
was necessary due to limited road
infrastructure, festive season road
closures, and weather disruption
in the interior of Melaka, hindering
the access of cement trucks.
Petronas Regasification TerminalSungai Udang, Melaka
With LNG shortages and subsidisation providing new challenges, Petronas decided to build a new state-of-the-art offshore facility incorporating a world-first jetty regasification unit. Situated 8 km off the coast of Melaka, the Sungai Udang regasification terminal accommodates super tankers, a necessity as local supply is depleted and the need for imported gas becomes a reality.
The terminal is 980 metres long and has annual capacity of 3.8 million tons, with two floating storage units permanently berthed at the jetty to receive and store LNG. The island jetty and processing units transport regasified LNG by subsea pipeline to the Peninsula Gas Utilisation pipeline network.
Completed in July 2012, the terminal’s innovative design enabled it to be built within a 1 billion ringgit budget, instead of the originally estimated 3 billion. Being located offshore also saved two years of construction time.

“ Given the demanding nature of this project
and the precision in meeting standards that
was required, we were looking for a partner,
not a supplier. We wanted to be sure that the
chosen party would take this commitment
seriously, and Holcim was fastidious in
attending to every issue that arose, promptly
resolving them. ” Steven Toh General Manager of PEC (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd

Research & Development
In construction, quality plays a critical part in the success of any given project, and managing the demands of the project with the quality required is a key concern. Holcim has initiated quality certification at the highest level, placing tremendous emphasis on its supply of raw materials, use of technologies, and dedicated follow-through on quality control procedures.
Quality management at Holcim is perpetually evolving, embracing the
Quality Managementlatest research and development, the newest technologies, and supported by teams of experts who bring together the best talent in various fields related to construction. Clients receive the assurance of quality and international best practice that is applied in quality planning and control. These procedural advancements are the result of a century of experience spanning the globe, and today are among Holcim’s defining traits.
R&D is a founding business philosophy at Holcim and key to the company’s strategic market positioning. It focuses on two critical areas:
First, meeting the needs of clients who are faced with specific challenges that can be overcome through product innovation and reformulation. This often results in the discovery of new health-related benefits, environmental benefits, or interesting new characteristics that may be appreciated by the entire market.
Building on this, Holcim is in the unique position of having formulae to produce project-specific cement products that result in superior quality and enhanced construction efficiencies, specifically for purpose-based projects.
The second area is operational efficiencies and sustainability, both core business philosophies integral to Holcim’s vision for the future. This involves finding ways to increase the use of recycled material in product formulation, increasing levels of recycling and waste reduction at the plant, and reducing energy consumption.
These principles and practices were put to the test when Holcim Malaysia became the first cement company in the country to secure the prestigious international eco-label certification from Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM), securing its place as the first ‘green’ cement manufacturer in Malaysian history.

Materials 39 38 Holcim in Malaysia
Materials
Quality, innovation, engineering, and the materials involved are all interlinked and interdependent. Holcim’s ability to deliver quality products and innovative solutions while meeting the highest engineering standards depends on the quality of the raw materials sourced and used. Suppliers are strongly supported, educated, and developed as partners, thereby ensuring long-term supply security in quality and quantity.
Aside from material quality, Holcim consistently undertakes research and development to find innovative materials that improve quality, enhance particular characteristics, and meet clients’ requirements while becoming increasingly environmentally-friendly. Part of this has involved greatly increasing the amount of recycled constituents in product manufacture – as
well as the use of alternative materials. Before production takes place, the core materials are analysed to ensure they are of the best quality. This process is conducted by experienced personnel for every batch of raw materials.
One of Holcim’s initiatives in 2010 included replacing clinker in cement with fly ash recycled from a previous process. This substantially reduces the carbon footprint of the product. Holcim is also developing materials to increase the durability and longevity of buildings and roads. The group is currently conducting detailed lifecycle assessments with government, academics, and other partners for various infrastructures, giving exceptional insights into local conditions that impact quality and durability, and enabling the continued development of relevant and industry adaptable products.
Talent is integral to maintaining technological superiority in today’s marketplace. Holcim employs some of the world’s foremost engineers and construction specialists and also supports academia, resulting in unparalleled access to the latest research advancements internationally through the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Development.
Holcim also believes in using the latest and most advanced technologies, machinery, and equipment to ensure the highest engineering and construction standards are maintained. It also shares its vast experience and provides clients with
sophisticated advisory support at every stage of construction, covering almost every type of infrastructural, social, and commercial development.
Holcim is also able to analyse the surroundings and conduct survey testing to evaluate the environmental, social, hydraulic, structural, and geotechnical effects of the project. Where requested by the client, Holcim will plan and design the project, map out a detailed logistics plan, produce a site development plan, and outline the involvement of various suppliers.

Technical SupportQuality is vital in construction and has shaped Holcim’s market perception. The technical support team is dedicated to ensuring product quality, and that consistency is properly and effectively managed. As an extension of this function they are also able to provide advice on all aspects of the use and application of cement and concrete. This is possible as the team is made up of civil engineers with considerable experience in cement and concrete technology, including on-going advances in local standards, specifications, and building practices.
Holcim’s dedicated contact centre and customer care team supports the sales team with fast and efficient after-sales service, order handling, deliveries, coordination at job sites, logistics tracking, and any special need arrangements. This ensures smooth day-to-day supply management between clients and Holcim. Experienced personnel can troubleshoot issues in non-critical or non-specialist areas as necessary.
Sales PersonnelSales Personnel
Holcim’s philosophy is that sales is not about targets being met and transactions taking place. It is really about building and sustaining relationships. At Holcim, the foundation of the sales principles is unwavering commitment to deliver on the promises made. In line with this approach, exceptional efforts have been made to ensure the sales team receives extensive training locally and internationally from high-calibre professionals through seminars, workshops, international training and placement assignment, mentoring programmes, and much more.
In this way, sales teams are able to execute a high degree of professionalism in their conduct. Holcim ensures that they have in-depth knowledge of the company’s products, services, and capabilities so that they can match client needs with what can be provided. They can bank on specialists within the Group to tailor solutions to specific client needs, working alongside the client team to negotiate challenges to a successful and timely completion that may arise during the course of construction.

“ The human dimension is the most important
contributor to business success. And invariably
it is also the most complex and sophisticated.
Holcim continues to drive growth through its
human talent.”Cheng Chia Yee,
Holcim Vice President, Human Resources
6 People First
Holcim Malaysia believes that a business is essentially a collection of people. People, therefore, are the company’s most important assets. Recognising the importance of talent management and the need for investment in human capital to ensure the growth of the company, Holcim Malaysia has been a local leader with its ‘People First’ management philosophy and practices.
The cornerstone of its human development lies in dedication to technology transfer, expertise collaboration, knowledge and information sharing, and a commitment to education through conventional means, training, and on-the-job assignments.
In 2010, Holcim Malaysia received the Malaysia Human Resources Development Award from the Ministry of Human Resources.
As a multinational company, Holcim practises equal opportunity employment and provides a dynamic
multicultural work environment which fosters international careers. Learning on the job is strongly emphasised, and opportunities are continuously identified for team members at all levels to undertake regional and international assignments, or local assignments that require engagement with regional or international teams, thereby allowing the candidate the opportunity to grow and develop through technical, managerial, and cultural exposure, with exponential opportunities for the exceptional few to pursue extraordinary career opportunities.
7 Sustainable Development
Holcim’s global sustainable development journey started several decades ago and has become more explicit over the course of the last 10 years; today, it is an integral part of our business strategy. Our focus now is to promote and strengthen the sustainable development culture so that it continues to add value to everything we do.
Holcim has a key role to play in promoting and developing sustainable construction techniques and technology. The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction is one way we are meeting our commitment. Providing sustainable solutions, Holcim demonstrates innovation by creating value that meets the needs of our customers and stakeholders in an increasingly fast-changing business environment. We aim to lead the industry in our
innovative approach, providing customer solutions that achieve sustainability and cost efficiency.
Our industry is resource and energy-intensive, so sustainability is paramount when we plan our operations and design new solutions for our customers. We take our ambition – zero fossil energy, zero emissions, and zero waste – from the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction’s ‘Reinventing Construction’ manifesto.
“ Sustainability is about responsibility, and
responsible decisions are sometimes not the
most cost-effective – but they are always right.”Mohib Rashid,

Corporate Social Responsibility
One of these key initiatives is the global ‘Together for Communities’ programme, where Holcim employees are asked to make personal time contributions to the community by volunteering to assist in programmes established by many of the Group’s companies. The aim is to engage all 80,000 employees worldwide in working for one day for the community. The underlying idea is that almost 100 years of voluntary work can thus be contributed to society.
Holcim’s vision for the future is based on making a difference for the coming generation, and contributing to the continuity and sustainability of individual
communities. Therefore, Holcim Malaysia decided to focus on ‘Child and Education’ for its Together for Communities project. In the early stages, the Kampung Pasir Putih kindergarten was adopted. The rationale was the poor standard of education among indigenous children and the poor educational infrastructure, compelling intervention and help.
Holcim is also working with Jabatan Kebajikan Orang Asli to repair and improve the facilities at the kindergarten. Building on this, a few settlements were visited and studied to see what could be done to improve their children’s education. Here, Holcim has committed to
contributing about 80 days annually for community volunteering.
Holcim plans to create awareness among parents in these communities of the importance of education and hygiene, so that learning leads to a permanent improvement in conditions.
Making a difference for the coming generation is essential to the continuity and sustainability of the individual communities supported. Combined at an international level, these efforts will contribute to a better future for the next generation in these communities, which will be able to progress and develop faster towards their full potential.
Responsibility
Holcim is committed to developing, uplifting, and enhancing the communities in which it operates. As a global leader in the construction materials industry, with a 100-year history and a presence across every continent, Holcim is very aware of its key role in ensuring that global development is carried out responsibly and that the benefits are distributed across a wide community base. Every Holcim office therefore engages with its local community to identify where it can make an effective contribution.
Children from Kampung Pasir Putih are recipients of educational aid from Holcim Malaysia.

Holcim Foundation for SustainabilityThe Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction was created in 2003 to raise awareness of the important role that architecture, engineering, urban planning, and construction have in achieving a more sustainable future – and to globally encouragecritical interdisciplinary and long-range perspectives.
With this in mind, the Holcim Foundation’s primary objective is to support selected initiatives that extend beyond technical solutions to creating sustainable construction that embraces architectural excellence and enhanced quality of life.
Holcim Awards The Holcim Awards competitions recognise and bring to a far wider audience a range of ground-breaking projects that have immediate application, as well as ‘blue sky’ concepts that point the way to the future. The worldwide competitions are designed to focus the minds of architects, planners, engineers, and project owners on creating innovative construction solutions that truly champion sustainability. Any contribution to sustainable construction is recognised, irrespective of scale.
The Holcim Awards seek projects and concepts that demonstrate an ability to stretch conventional notions about sustainable building – balancing environmental, social, and economic performance – while also exemplifying architectural excellence and a high degree of transferability. The competitions celebrate innovative, future-orientated, and tangible sustainable construction projects around the world, offering total prize money of US$2 million in each three-year competition cycle.
The Holcim Awards are open to architects, planners, engineers, project owners, builders, and construction firms. They also seek visions and ideas for university student projects.
The Holcim Forum & Holcim Grants The Holcim Forum is a series of symposiums conducted by the Foundation on the topic of sustainable construction. The event is an academic platform for architects, engineers, construction professionals, and specialists of all generations to exchange information on creating sustainable built environments and thus advance sustainable development.
The Forum supports sustainable construction in the scientific field among experts in the construction sector, business, and society, promoting interdisciplinary dialogue on new ideas and potential solutions.
The Foundation also promotes sustainable construction through the Holcim Grants, which provide seed funding for research projects. The grants allow interesting and important new ideas, regardless of origin, to be realised and to be followed by an audience of professionals. Projects nominated for funding are assessed according to five target issues. Grants are co-funded with a Holcim Group company, which subsequently monitors and supports the project.
Wide-ranging interest spans national, regional, and global projects in developing and industrialised nations. The Holcim Foundation has already made useful progress towards uniting diverse global expertise and increasing awareness of the critical role of the built environment in sustainability. It has achieved this by identifying and promoting best practice and fresh solutions. The construction projects, visions, and research inspire architects, engineers, planners, developers, and contractors to adopt sustainable approaches for their building projects.
The Holcim Foundation feels privileged to be associated with an array of ground-breaking projects and initiatives, and to be in a position to share the resulting valuable knowledge and insights.
