Reading Fill in your reading log. Newsround Activity: Read ‘Space: Extreme Planet’ and complete page 22.
Writing Task: On Friday we will be creating a character description for the Iron Man. Ted Hughes was primarily a poet rather than an author. Can you spot any poetic devices in the beginning of the story? Look for similes, metaphors, alliteration, repetition, rhetorical questions, short sentences? All of these are figurative language techniques that help describe the character to the reader. Task: Can you create your own similes to describe the Iron Man. (pg 4)
Writing Task: What do you think it is important to include in a character description? One thing I think you should definitely include in your description, is expanded noun phrases. Can you find any of these in the first chapter of the Iron Man? What about the ‘strong wind’, or the ‘rocky beach’. Task: Using pg 8, I would like you to write lots of adjectives around the Iron Man picture. Then, can you think of any more powerful synonyms to up-level your word choices. (pg.9)
Writing Task: Ted Hughes doesn’t just use great descriptive adjectives to describe his characters, but he also describes them through his use of powerful verbs. We can learn a lot about a character by the actions they make. Can you spot any of these in the first chapter of The Iron Man? What about ‘swayed’ or ‘scuttling’. Task: Add to your mind-map from yesterday some powerful verbs that you think will describe the Iron Man’s movements. Make sure they are appropriate, he wouldn’t tiptoe!
Writing Task: The wind dang through his iron fingers. Can you label the word class of each word in this sentence? Which ones did you struggle with? Well done if you knew that ‘through’ is a preposition. Use these links to refresh your memory of prepositions or try the Purple Mash 2do. Video 1. BBC Bitesize. Task: Worksheet on page 19. Can you create some sentences underneath your mind map using prepositions, powerful verbs, similes and ENPs.
Writing Task: All of your work this week, has led up to your big write today. Task: I would like you to re-write the opening of The Iron Man, focussing on describing the character of the Iron Man. Success Criteria: - Expanded Noun Phrases (theravaging seagulls)- Alliteration (metallic man)- Personification (the tired, crying cliffs, the sea beckonedthe Iron Man to enter)- Powerful verbs (topplinginstead of falling)- Prepositions (under, towards)

Year 3
In the event of a school closure, children are expected to complete the following tasks daily.
Please visit class pages on a daily basis for additional information.
1
Music Activity:
Imagine you are the Iron Man and you have come to the Planet Earth for the very first time. You are standing on top of the cliff looking out to the sea. What can you hear? You stand in silence for a few seconds, before lifting up your great Iron leg. What sound does that make? How do you think the Iron Man is feeling? When making movies or documentaries, backing music has such a great part to play in creating atmosphere. It also helps the listener understand a character’s feelings.
Can you have a go at recreating the backing music for when the Iron Man steps off the cliff. I have set a 2do for you in which I am reading the section from the book. I have stopped reading just before the crash as I thought this would be a great place for sound effects! Your music should reflect the mood felt by the Iron Man before and after his fall. PE Activity: https://www.yewtree.tgacademy.org.uk/curriculum/sports-and-after-school-clubs/ T – Tennis Keepie Uppie Challenge
History Activity:
Robots are not just fictional; they exist in the real world too! Starter: Using pages 12,13 and 14, have a go at creating a timeline of robots! Main: I would like you to research about a famous robot of our history. This could be the first ever robot, or one you think has impacted upon society. You choose. If you are really stuck, think about some famous fictional robots, and create a poster telling me when this robot was first created.
Task: Present this information in an informative PowerPoint or Poster. Try to answer these questions: What year was this robot created? Who invented it? Has it had a positive impact on society, and why? What would you change about this robot if you were to invent it now?
PE Activity: https://www.yewtree.tgacademy.org.uk/curriculum/sports-and-after-school-clubs/ U – Ultimate frisbee Target Disc Challenge
P.E Activity:
Robots have become a common inspiration for many dance moves over the years. For this week’s activity, I would like you to create you own robot inspired dance. Here are some examples to help inspire you: 1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-ulfVFtFBs 2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U54c4Km9rJA 3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_T81uUeZcM
I can’t wait to see what dance moves you come up with!

Art and Design Activity:
For your art activity this week, I would like you to have a go at junk modelling. This is when you use rubbish like empty cereal boxes, packaging, and toilet roll inserts to create something. Have a go at trying to build your very own robot. Once you have stuck it together, try and paint it or decorate it to make it look fantastic too! Perhaps give it a name and post a picture of it onto the blog on Purple Mash. I’d love to see it! Here are some examples:
PE Activity: https://www.yewtree.tgacademy.org.uk/curriculum/sports-and-after-school-clubs/ W – Windsurfing Circuit challenge
P.S.H.E Activity:
Being stuck in lockdown can be a frustrating and stressful time for us. Emotions can be overwhelming for you and your families. Remember our Zones of Regulation board in the classroom – the one with all the emotions on it? I would like you to have a go at creating your own version of this for your home. I am hoping that this fun ‘Emotional Robot’ will help you discuss your feelings with your family in a fun way. Watch this video for help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=47&v=UdyOuK_gvy0&feature=emb_logo
Task: Download the Robot here: https://lemonlimeadventures.com/emotional-robot-simple-emotions-activity-for-kids/ Create our emotional robot by colouring in the robot frame and then drawing some different heads (representing different emotions) to stick on top using the tabs. You can make as many different heads as you like.
