Introducing the Jazz HybridA cleaner, no-compromise choice
Honda has introduced its proven andreliable hybrid technology to its best-sellingcar. This new variant will sit alongside theestablished 1.2 and 1.4 litre petrol enginesand will bring Honda hybrid motoring to awhole new audience as the Jazz becomesthe worlds rst B-segment hybrid car.
The Jazz Hybrid has been given the samepowertrain as found in the Insight the1.3-litre i-VTEC petrol engine with HondasIMA technology and automatic CVT gearbox. This brings CO2 emissions down to 104g/km and delivers 62.8 miles per gallon on thecombined cycle. These gures mean freeroad tax for the rst year and only 10 peryear thereafter.
More importantly perhaps, Honda hasmanaged to include the technology withoutcompromising the incredible versatility ofthe Jazz. It features all the practicality ofthe petrol variant, most notably, the famedMagic Seats and an impressive load-luggingspace of up to 883 litres.
The Jazz Hybrid demonstrates Hondascontinuing commitment to petrol-electrichybrid technology as it becomes thethird car currently on sale in the UKto use the IMA system, sitting inshowrooms alongside the Insightand CR-Z.
Back by popular demandWelcome back to the CVT gearbox
The CVT transmission appeared in theprevious Jazz model (2002-2007) anddue to overwhelming customer demand,Honda has reintroduced the gearbox, along with a few clever tweaks.
The new gearbox matches the economyand emissions of the outgoing i-SHIFT1.4-litre model with a CO2 value startingat just 125g/km. The rest of the Jazz rangehas beneted from reductions in CO2values and improved fuel economy. The1.4-litre manual variant has emissionsstarting at 126g/km (down from 128g/km)and uses 51.4mpg on the combined cycle. The 1.2-litre fuel-sipper uses 53.3mpg andalso drops two grams of CO2 to 123g/km.
Jazzing up the Jazz
A refresh wouldnt be complete without anew look and Hondas designers haventdisappointed. They have worked theirmagic on both the exterior and interior ofthe car to give it a fresh look and feel.
Changes to the exterior have not beenpurely cosmetic. As well as giving thecar a new look, the revised front and rear
bumpers have also been designed toreduce drag, which in turn improves fueleconomy. Design features have also beenadded to distinguish between the Hybridand petrol versions. As an example, the front grille, headlights and tail lampson the Jazz Hybrid are all nished in achrome blue surround to mark it out fromthe petrol models.
There are also six new colours availableacross the range Azure Blue, PolishedMetal, Urban Titanium and Ionized Bronze
are additions to the petrol variants whilethe Hybrid version also benets from avibrant Lime Green Metallic and TaffetaWhite along with Azure Blue.
Leather upholstery makes a very welcomeappearance for the rst time in the Jazzrange. This addition gives a whole newfeeling to the interior of the car andis an important option for customersdownsizing from a larger premiumvehicle and for those who enjoy theirlittle luxuries.

JAZZ FAMILY TIMELINE
The design of small cars is one ofthe great challenges that Honda hastaken on. From the N360 of the 1960sto the Civic of the 1970s, Honda hasconsistently created small cars thathave become industry benchmarks.Behind this success has been Hond asman maximum, machine minimumconcept which calls for small cars tobe designed by allocating a maximumamount of space to the cabin whileminimising the space required formechanical components.
HOW WE GOT WHERE WE ARE TODAY...Room for improvementJust as you thought the Jazz couldnt getany more practical, it does just that. The Magic Seats, famed for their exibilityand multiple seating and cargo-carryingcongurations - have now got even betterwith the addition of a reclining rear seat. The rear seats can now recline 73mms toincrease rear passenger comfort.
Chassis changes
The suspension settings on the Jazz havebeen adjusted to increase ride comfortand improve handling. The revised modelhas also been given additional steeringresistance to improve on-centre feel topromote greater drivability.
Who will buy the new Jazz?
The fact the Jazz is so practical is thereason it attracts such a wide range ofpeople, from nurses and families withbabies to grandparents and drivinginstructors. This broad appeal is one ofthe reasons why the car has featured at,or near, the top of the sales charts every
year its been on sale in the UK.The average age of a Jazz customer is 56years old and the revised car will continueto exceed the demands of this maturemarket. However, the cars sharp newlooks and new hybrid technology will alsoappeal to younger customers and thosewishing to downsize.
Jazz is popular in the corporate marketand Honda expects to gain more salesthrough this channel with the l atest car, especially given the high level ofspecication and the improvedenvironmental credentials.
How many do you plan to sell inthe UK?
The UK target for 2011 will be of similarvolume to the current Jazz, sales of whichtotalled 27,191 units in 2009. This placed itin the top three of its competitor set.The Hybrid version is expected to accountfor around 10 per cent of Jazz sales.
What are the main competitorsfor Jazz?
B-segment superminis such as VW Polo,Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsaand Mazda2 are all competitors to theJazz. The Hybrid model goes up againstcars such as the VW Polo Bluemotion andthe Toyota Yaris 1.4 d TR.
When does it go on sale?
The revised Jazz goes on sale in the UKin February 2011.
1. Launched in March 1967, the N360 became Japans best-selling carwithin two months of hitting showrooms.By designing it from the cabin down, Hondaengineers were able to create more interiorspace than had ever been seen before in asmall car. Its pride and joy was a two-cylinder, air-cooled 354cc engine thatproduced a modest 31 horsepower.
2. The original Civic went on salein July 1972 and soon achieved the statedgoal of becoming a global model sold onthe worldwide market. A true pioneer thatcreated a new market segment, the Civicsoon became known as a car for everyone.
3. The City rst appeared in 1981 with an unusually tall body that allowed for aspacious interior. With countless innovations
in both function and style, it proved thatHondas obsession with maximising spacewas leading to bigger and better things.
4. Debuting in 2002, the Jazz soonbecame known as an innovative superminithat changed expectations and attitudestowards small cars. Thanks to its remarkablyefcient interior packaging the Jazz wowedboth the critics and the British buying public.
5. The second generation was launched in 2008 which took theinnovative concept of the Jazz to the next
stage with more space, better versatilityand smarter looks, to improve what wasalready an excellent car.
6. In October 2009, productionof the Jazz moved to Honda of the UKManufacturing (HUM) in Swindon where it joined the Civic and CR-V to become Hondasthird British-built model.

The Jazz is such a successfulcar how did you go aboutimproving it?
Mr Hitomi: The ample cabin space, versatility, impressive fuel efciencyfor a petrol car and exterior design are just some of the reasons why the Jazzhas been so successful. However, severalweaknesses were identied such as,interior quality, driving dynamics, noise, uncomfortable i-SHIFT transmissionand inefciency compared to diesels. In the revised Jazz we focussed onimproving these weaknesses by addingthe CVT gearbox and hybrid technologyto make the car more competitive and tostrengthen the unique Jazz brand image.
What were the challenges withtting the hybrid technology tothe Jazz?
Mr Hitmoi: There were threemajor challenges:
t iv i idevices without compromising usabilityand the large boot space.
t i v i . t the Jazz was designed as a compact car
and the challenge was to improve airresistance within budget.
t iv i i iv differentiate the hybrid version from thepetrol model in design and drivability.
Mr Shishido: In order to maintainthe brilliant versatility of the Jazz, the battery had to be housed under theboot oor, while the air duct for coolingthe technology has been accommodatedin the cabin. To make this new layoutfeasible, the geometry had to be lookedat thoroughly in order to meet thecooling performance criteria and toreduce the noise level.
Furthermore, various technologieshave been introduced to reduce travel
resistance with the compact yet tallbody of Jazz.
Mr Nagamine: Our aim was not just tointroduce the hybrid system, but to alsounderstand what customers expect in ahybrid car and actually implement theseexpectations in the Jazz. The quiet andseamless driving sensation is just one ofthese expectations that customers havewith cutting-edge hybrid systems.
We have addressed these issues byoptimising the geometry and features ofevery single area. Had we focussed onpackaging alone, these features wouldnot have been implemented.
Who do you see driving the
revised Jazz, particularlythe Hybrid?
Mr Hitomi: While diesel cars are efcienton long journeys, the benet of hybridcars is the efciency in city driving whereacceleration/deceleration is frequentlyrepeated. Our Jazz Hybrid embodies
features such as; quietness, easy handlingthanks to the CVT transmission, high viewpoint, good visibility, manoeuvrability, and ample cabin and boot space.Given these features, I see drivers wholive in city areas appreciating the car.
Mr Shishido: I believe those whomainly drive in city areas will benetmost from the Jazz. Deceleration energyis regenerated and can be used eitherfor acceleration or EV driving, while thecompact body with the two-pedal feature
will make city driving easier and cleaner.Mr Ota: I imagine the Jazz will be wellreceived by young families who will benetfrom the space and versatility.
What new feature will customersenjoy most?
Mr Hitomi: The hybrid system. Quiet yetpowerful acceleration and engine start up.
Mr Nagamine: The ambient lighting ofthe speedometer.
What feature are you mostproud of?
Mr Hitomi: The way we have combinedand housed two of Hondas unique
technologies the centre tank layout andthe IMA system - to t into the car withoutcompromising on space and versatility.
Mr Shishido: The ECON function in thehybrid system.
Mr Ota: The EV display on the dashboard.
What are the benets of the CVTgearbox?
Mr Ota: For me its the torque converter. It enables a smooth and powerful start up,while the continuous and seamless gearshift offers a relaxing drive and excellentfuel economy.
What changes have been madeto the driving experience?
Mr Ota: In the cars equipped with theCVT transmission, acceleration strokeand engine revolution are now controlledlinearly which enables a smooth andtorquey drive. Also, by eliminatingfriction, the steering feel has improved.Harshness in the suspension has alsobeen minimised.
What are the new interior andexterior design changes?
Mr Nakahara: The European market isvery competitive and the interior qualityof the Jazz needed improvement in orderfor the car to be a serious contender forthe top spot, hence why we introducedleather seats this is the rst time everthat leather is available in the Jazz. Ourfocus on the exterior was to improve
aerodynamics and thanks to the newfront and rear bumpers the aerodynamicperformance has been improved by twoper cent.
Mr Nozawa: The revised model retainsall the popular usability and versatilityfeatures. We also managed to keep theboot oor height and the Magic Seatsin the Hybrid version even after theintroduction of the IMA technology.Other interior improvements include:
c i i iand dark metallic colour for panels
I i

NAME : JOAN PRIDHAMLIVES : DUKINFIELD, CHESHIRE
I'm now on my second Honda Jazz I've actually been driving onesince 2003.
After driving the rst one fornearly 6 years, there really was noalternative on offer that could trulymatch the Jazz. It's easy to drive,
easy to park and so very versatile. All my friends are really amazedat how easy the seats are to adjust and the car's ability to transformfrom a comfortable 5 seater, to what is, in truth, a mini estate car.
My husband regularly 'borrows' it for quick trips out, saying it's souseful, when he needs something from the hardware store. Thing is,he likes driving it too.
I do voluntary work for the RSPCA and my colleagues there think thatthe Jazz is the best car they have ever seen. They love its load carryingcapability and the fact it can be back to a 5 seater within a minute.
One of the f unniest things that occurred with the Jazz was on my wayto an RSPCA fund-raising event, where I had the rear seats down
and the whole of the back lled with cuddly toys. It never occurredto me how funny this actually looked until I arrived at the venue andmy friends stood there laughing. It appeared that there was a zoo inthe back of my Jazz, with lots of little cuddly faces peering out of thewindows.
My son moved house recently and it was the only vehicle that couldtake his rather large TV - one up for the Jazz, you could say!
NAME : KAREN CLARKLIVES : YORK
I'm the very lucky owner ofBlue the Great Dane, who lovesto travel by car. We go outmost days in the car into thecountryside for muddy walks. When I needed a new car thatwould accommodate such a big
dog (she weighs 10 stone) I had trouble as no one would let me try herin their cars.
I wanted a small car that I would feel condent driving but most ofthem came with ridiculously small boots. My husband had heardabout the Jazz and the claims of the space inside so I went to lookat Marshall Honda in York. They were not only friendly and notpatronising but said the only way to see if Blue would be happy in aJazz was to let her in one! The salesman opened up the boot for Blue, who got in with room to spare. But the best bit was the magic seats.Blue could easily wander into the back and she sat herself down andlooked at us as if to say "sold".
I bought a new one, made a cover for the back, put in a dog bed and
Blue and I have had hundreds of happy journeys. I love the reliabilityand the level of comfort.
We also had to buy a tumble d ryer and I said it would t in the backwith the seats down and my hubbie didn't believe me. He was amazedwhen it did t and had space to spare.
I'm hoping to buy another new Jazz soon and hopefully Blue and I willhave many more journeys ahead of us. We love our Jazz!
As its countless satisfaction awards prove, the Jazz is a car loved by its owners. If youveever wondered why, here are some clues...
CUSTOMER CASE STUDIESNAME : MARY ARDRONLIVES : PETTS WOOD, KENT
I bought my rst Honda Jazz inAugust 2005. To that point, myhusband John and I had beensharing a Honda Prelude and generally ghting over it atthe weekends so we decidedto go ahead and treat ourselvesto a second car.
John was very keen on Hondas, having owned several Preludes in thepast and been impressed with their reliability. We thought the HondaJazz would suit me well, and we liked the style of the car for therelatively affordable purchase price. The other thing that struck mewas the exibility with the back seats, and as we were also thinking ofpurchasing a new house - with the potential for house refurbishment- we thought that kind of exibility would come in handy.
Shortly after I took delivery of my new Jazz in August 2005 I found outI was pregnant, and we had a little girl in April 2006. The car took onan extra level of importance to me as I was then at home using itseveral times a day. I found it incredibly convenient for nipping intothose tight parking spaces, as well as being very fuel efcient.
We eventually moved house in August 2008. Our new house neededlots of refurbishment, and the exibility of the Jazz's back seats hascome into play time and time again. Generally, the car has stood upwell to some pretty tough treatment.
In October 2010 we decided to upgrade to a new car. Despite beingvery happy with the Jazz, we looked around at the competitionand considered many alternatives. However, after paying a visitto our local Honda dealership we decided to switch to the newJazz SI model.
NAME : DAVE PINNELLLIVES : CARDIFF, SOUTH WALES
I rst became aware of the Jazzwhen it began topping variousmotoring league tables forcustomer satisfaction, reliabilityand innovation. I remembercalling into my local Hondadealership to see what all thefuss was about and, of course,
the reasons were plain to see excellent build quality, ingeniousinterior design and fuel economy.
At the time I was tied-in to a PCP deal on another vehicle but, whenthe contract was approaching its end, I revisited the dealership andbecame the proud owner of what is undoubtedly the b est car Ive everowned or driven.
Although, professionally, my time is predominantly spent at thecomputer, my interests beyond graphic design include music-makingwhich can involve transporting signicant amounts of eq uipment toand from venues.
Whilst studying for a music degree I helped form a three-pieceband and, as the only car owner, it fell to me to transport the gearfrom place-to-place. With a bit of thought it was possible to loadthe Jazz with the entire PA system and two complete rigs for boththe guitarist and bass player as well as the two musicians! A prettyimpressive feat, as Im sure anyone thats ever played in a bandwould have to agree.
As if the fantastic carrying capacity wasnt impressive enough, thefuel economy is none too shabby either! O n one longish-distance trip,I maintained a steady 50 mph each way and managed to achieve amind-boggling 64 mpg. In fact I was so impressed with this that I hadto wake my wife to come and witness the fuel consumption displaywhen I got back in the early hours!

PositioningWith many drivers looking toput the squeeze on their motoring costs, the new Jazz couldnt have timed its arrivalbetter. Heres how it will appeal to an evenwider audience
It seems downsizing is the buzzword of themoment. With motoring costs escalating, its no surprise that many car buyers arelooking for a smaller car to meet theirneeds. For those people, the Jazz couldbe an ideal choice, because it offers manyfeatures of a bigger car (load space, driving feel and high-spec equipment),but in a small car package. So, you get thepracticality and comfort of a larger car, with the fuel economy, emissions and moreaffordable running costs of a small one.
One of the reasons so many people buythe Jazz is for the class-leading loadspace. Despite its size, total luggagespace in the Jazz can stretch to a huge883 litres, which beats all competition inthe supermini sector and rivals that ofsome in the class above!
The addition of environmental technologycan often result in compromises for the
driver, but not with the Jazz Hybrid. The Hybrid features the practicalityfound in the petrol models including animpressive load-lugging space of upto 883 litres with the rear seats down.Engineers have managed to keep theMagic Seats by integrating the IMAsystem, battery pack and power controlunit under the boot oor.
Magic Seats
Magic Seats are standard across therange and if you thought they couldnt getany more useful youd be wrong. Thanksto the introduction of reclining rear seats, the interior is more exible than ever.
The 2:1 split Magic Seats which offermultiple seating and load-carryingcongurations drop-down in one motion
without the need to remove the headrestsor adjust the front passenger seatposition. For added versatility, the rearseats now recline 73mm to increase rearpassenger comfort and exibility.
How the Magic Seats work:
Utility Mode
With the seats folded down, Jazz offersa perfectly at load oor thats 1720mmlong; enough for four large suitcasesor a few kids bikes. With just two of therear seats collapsed there is sufcientspace and length for a surfboard (if youhappen to have one); or two 26-inch framemountain bikes stood upright.
Long Mode
For all at-pack furniture transportersout there, this mode uses the fulllength of the Jazz. By fully reclining thepassenger seat and dropping the MagicSeats at, a massive 2.4 metre long loadspace is revealed.
To return the rear seats to a seatingposition, you simply lift the assembly backup; the seat bottom remains locked tothe seat back and is simply released bypulling up the leg frame.
Tall Mode
Locking the seat base in the up positionagainst the seat backs creates a secondload area between front and rear seats tostow taller items in the rear foot-wells.The clearance here is 1280mm tall anditems such as bikes, golf clubs, a foldedwheelchair, tall plants and furniture canall t in. And since the rear doors open to80 degrees, it is easy to make full use ofthis feature.

ULTR Double-Trunk
The versatile interior of the Jazz isenhanced by the Double-Trunk bootfeature (available on 1.4-litre models only)that can be congured in four ways to suitdifferent load requirements.
The Double-Trunk comprises of a exiblefolding oor, under-oor storage welland cargo net. The clever part is how theoor folds to create either a multi-layeredload space or opens up to make use of theboots total volume.
How it works
Upper Mode The oor can be half-folded up to make a two-tier shelvingunit with cargo net, creating a double loadspace. Heavier items can be stored belowand lighter items can be placed on theupper shelf, which incorporates the cargonet perfect for holding fruit, wine orother items prone to rolling around.
Lower Mode With the oor in itsnormal position, the cargo net can berevealed to store awkwardly shapeditems. Using the cargo net in Lowermode means theres still a large atload space available.
The 230mm deep under oor space isideal for storing sports gear or raincoatsand umbrellas and once the lid is on,it keeps dirty objects separate from theother luggage.
Tall Mode The under oor storagewell adds 64 litres of load space and can
be concealed (by the oor) or opened outby folding the oor up against the rearseats or removing it al together. This extradepth is ideal for carrying taller items likea pushchair. A load lip just 605mm fromthe ground makes loading and unloadingeasy and convenient. And nally, a handyshopping bag hook is located on the lefthand side of the luggage bay.
Storage galore
The Jazz comes packed with thoughtfullydesigned storage spaces to stow allthe paraphernalia a modern familycar requires:
a - i v i i using a stream from the air conditioningunit on 1.4-litre ES and EX models andall Hybrid variants ideal for keepingdrinks and choccies cool

p most models
No space is left unused. Theres even a storage compartmentin the base of the left hand rear seat squab. Once opened byunscrewing two knurled wheels, smaller items like the ownersmanual and maps can be kept there.
Panoramic roof
For the ultimate sense of space, the 1.4 EX and Jazz Hybrid HXmodels are tted with a full length panoramic roof that extendsover the rear seats for a great aerial view. Its great to park up,lie back and admire the view but also makes the rear of the carbrighter and more airy for passengers.
Although the glass is heat absorbent, theres an electric blindwhich can be opened or closed to keep the cabin at the perfecttemperature. Lets hope the panoramic roof brings us luck withthe British weather!

BIG CAR IN A SMALL PACKAGE IS A GOOD WAY TODESCRIBE THE JAZZ. WHILE THE REVISED CAR IS JUSTAS CLEVERLY PACKAGED, FRESH STYLING GIVES THE JAZZA NEW APPEARANCE.
EXTERIOR DESIGN
New front and rear bumpers are themain parts to have inuenced the lookof the car. These have also been designed
to reduce drag as the airow passes overthe Jazzs body and to avoid turbulencewhen the airow detaches from the rear.
Aerodynamic efciency is a vital partof saving fuel and thats why the Jazzkeeps the familiar slim A-pillars andforward leaning shape, but adds anaero styled grille and the redesignedbumper. These styling improvementsaid aerodynamic efciency on all Jazzmodels helping the Cd gure to fallfrom 0.336 to 0.330.

TO REDUCE BOTH THE EXHAUST EMISSIONS AND RUNNING COSTS OFTHE JAZZ, HONDA HAS ADDED ITS CLEANER HYBRID TECHNOLOGY TOTHE RANGE OF POWERTRAINS AVAILABLE TO THE SUPERMINI.
ENGINES
Installing a petrol-electric system into itsbest-selling car in the UK not only showsHondas commitment to the cleanermotoring technology, it also highlights
the exibility of the compact IMA set-up.The IMA version of the Jazz will be theworlds rst B-segment hybrid car, bringing hassle-free low emission drivingto a whole new audience.
This new Hybrid variant will sit alongsidethe established 1.2-litre and best-selling1.4-litre i-VTEC petrol engines in theJazz range.
The Honda Jazz Hybrid - Proventechnology under the skin
The cleanest Jazz will feature thesame powertrain as the Insight hybrid;a 1.3-litre i-VTEC engine combined witha CVT gearbox, with an electric motorsandwiched between the two to createa parallel hybrid system. And just like theInsight, the Jazz Hybrid will be capable ofrunning on the electric motor alone undercertain low-speed conditions.
The result is an ultra-efcient car with acombined fuel consumption gure of 62.8mpg and with the same super-smooth
electric system as the Insight, even morefuel is saved around town.
A CO2 output of just 104g/km makes theJazz Hybrid the lowest of any automaticcar in the B-segment.
As well as the environmental benets, owning a Honda Jazz Hybrid means moreaffordable driving. Not only will fuel billsbe lower for customers, but the car isexempt from Vehicle Excise Duty for therst year and owners will pay just 10 ayear there after.
Honda IMA System
At the heart of the Honda Jazz Hybridis the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA)system. With almost two decades ofdevelopment and 10 years of salesbehind it, this advanced technologyhas proven itself to be a exible anddependable system. Worldwide, more
than half a million vehicles on the road, including over 16,000 in the UK alone, benet from its combination of lowemissions and fuel economy.

16/25
What does the powertrain in the JazzHybrid consist of?
There are four elements to the system;a low-friction 1.3-litre i-VTEC petrolengine which serves as the primarypower source, an ultra-thin electricmotor, a lightweight and compact batteryand an automatic Continuously VariableTransmission (CVT). The engine andelectric motor work in tandem based ondriver inputs to deliver impressive fueleconomy and low emissions.
How much of the Jazz Hybrids system isshared with Hondas other hybrids?
The IMA system has proved itself veryreliable and that in itself helps keep costsdown for the consumer. The 1.3-litreengine has already been seen in theHonda Insight, while the IMA system isalmost identical to what you will nd inthe Insight and the sporty CR-Z coup.As youd expect from the sharedtechnology, the drive stages are verysimilar to Insight:
1 Start-up idle - engine2 Start up acceleration engine with
electric motor assist3 Low speed cruise electric motor only
(if conditions are right)4 Deceleration electric motor
regeneration5 Idling stop Engine off (if conditions
are right)
Getting this technology into the Jazzmeans it must be getting smaller?
Yes. The Jazz Hybrids IMA system buildson the pioneering technology Honda rstunveiled in the original Insight, launchedin 2000. Over the years, and with the hardwork and dedication of Hondas engineers,it has evolved, and become more compactand lightweight. The fth generationIMA system in the Jazz Hybrid is 24per cent more compact than the fourthgeneration system was, ensuring thatone of the Jazzs most famous attributes, practicality, is not diminished. Its alsoless expensive to produce.
Does the Jazz Hybrid have VariableCylinder Management (VCM)?
Yes it does. During deceleration, whenthe engines four cylinders have noload on them and combustion in themis stopped, each pot is sealed shut bythe VCM system. It means no fuel iswasted. It also decreases resistance toallow the electric motor to operate moreefciently and increases energy recoveryto charge the battery. The sealing of thecylinders means the air trapped insideis compressed slightly and can be usedlike a spring, increasing the efciencywithout the need to decouple the engine.VCM is also used to shut all four cylinderswhen only a very little amount of torque isrequired, for example, during low-speedcruising. In this mode the Jazz Hybrid is
powered by the electric motor only, withthe pistons running idle, meaning no fuelis used and no CO2 is produced.
What are the outputs of the engine andelectric motor?
On its own, the 1.3-litre engine uses atwo stage VTEC process that sees poweroutput balanced at a useful 88PS witha exible torque prole peaking at 121
Nm. Perfect power characteristics fora frugal city car. But the key to Hondahybrid systems is the support given bythe electric motor. That helps boostperformance as well as keep emissionsand fuel consumption to a minimum. The motor uses coils with high-densitywindings and high-performance magnetsto produce an extra 14PS and 78Nm.
Anything else clever going on withthe powertrain?
Yes. Virtually everything possible hasbeen done to the engine to reduce friction, including a new offset crankshaft/connecting rod design, plateau honingof the cylinders for a smoother surfaceand a second low friction piston ring.
Does the battery requireexternal charging?
No charging is required. You just ll upwith petrol and drive.
HYBRID Q&A ECON ModeThe ECON switch is situated to the rightof the steering wheel and is activated bythe driver. When the switch is engaged,it tells the cars management system toadopt specic settings to improve fuelconsumption, but does so withoutaffecting overall safety levels or thegeneral usability of the car. Its based onthe ECON mode which rst appeared inthe Honda Insight, but has been modiedand improved to offer consistently longer
Idle Stop times for the new car. Idle Stopis engaged when engine power isntrequired, for example, when waiting attrafc lights, so the engine is switched off.
When the ECON switch is activated, theJazz Hybrid enters a super economy
mode, resulting in: f i i q
(except when the driver presses thepedal to the oor).
t iv i ismoothed out to optimise throttle
position and engine speed. This isbecause at any engine speed, there isan optimum throttle angle, which ifmaintained, results in the bestfuel efciency.
s cVt i
I iv i
ai i i i frequently in the recirculation mode
f i frequently to limit the systemsconsumption of energy
Note: Real-world fuel economy andemissions should be improved whenECON mode is activated, but this does notaffect the ofcial EU fuel economy oremission gures.
The history of the ECON Mode perfectlyillustrates Hondas twin passions forengineering and helping owners make themost of their cars.
A few years ago, while monitoringcustomer use of the MkI Honda Jazz, thedevelopment team working on the newHonda Insight discovered there weresignicant differences in the fuel economyachieved from one driver to another.
For example, at an average speed of20mph, there was a variance of up to 21%in the actual fuel consumption beingrecorded by different drivers. With this inmind, the engineers tweaked the Jazzsmanagement system in an attempt to
minimise the effect of varying drivingstyles on fuel economy. When the testswere repeated, the least efcient driversimproved their results, and the differencebetween best and worst was reduced to12%. Honda engineers used this data inthe development of the new Insight andJazz Hybrid models, and the result is theECON switch.
Eco Assist
The dashboard of the Honda Jazz Hybridfeatures an integrated system called EcoAssist. Already a familiar sight to Insightand CR-Z drivers, Eco Assist uses theambient lighting of the speedometer toadvise the driver on how their habitsbehind the wheel is impacting on theirfuel economy. It glows green when the caris at its most economical and graduallyturns blue as the driver exceeds the bestbalance of throttle or braking.
Eco Assist is a vital element of one ofthe key aspects of hybrid ownership the effective use of energy. It showsdrivers how its possible to minimisefuel use by maintaining momentumand avoiding excessive acceleration ordeceleration. In short, it helps them getmaximum economy from their car
in everyday situations. Eco Assist givesreal-time feedback on how their use ofthe brakes and throttle effects their fuelbills and environmental impact.

The Jazz retains the 1.2-litre andbest-selling 1.4-litre i-VTEC petrolengines. To compliment the launch ofthe Hybrid, they have also benetted fromsome small reductions in CO2 values andimproved fuel economy. The 1.4-litremanual variant has emissions starting at126 g/km down from 128 g/km and uses51.4mpg on the combined cycle. The fuelsipping 1.2 litre engine uses 53.3mpg and
also drops two grams of CO2 to 123 g/km.
i-VTEC How it works
Hondas familiar VTEC variable valvetiming system helps to achieve efciencyand power together. Depending on engineload and engine speed, an electroniccontroller chooses between two differentcam proles to determine how the intakevalves will operate maximising economyand performance.
At low revs, the timing of the twointake valves is staggered and the liftasymmetrically skewed in favour ofthe primary valve which helps to createa swirl effect within the combustionchamber that increases the efciencyof the burn process. At higher rpm thesecondary valve changes to a long-duration mode that increases thevolume of air/fuel mixture moving into
the combustion chamber. This additionalmixture helps increase power at highengine speeds.
The head utilises a narrow designbetween the intake and exhaust valves, contributing to the units compact size.
Drive by wire throttle
The Jazz is tted with electronicdrive-by-wire (DBW) throttle controlwhich optimises the throttle aperturewhen the accelerator is depressed forquick and precise delivery of fuel to theengine, maximising efciency. The endresult is an engine design with good lowend torque, high-revving power and
optimum fuel efciency.
TRANSMISSIONSWelcome back CVT
Wouldnt it be great to know that whateverspeed you required, the best gear wasalways selected for you? Thats thesolution CVT provides. Constantly variabletransmission, more commonly known asCVT, rst appeared in the previous Jazzrange and due to overwhelming customerdemand Honda has brought it back along
with a few clever improvements. The CVT is an automatic transmission thatchanges seamlessly up and down throughthe gears to keep the engine in a revrange where the car is most efcient. Aswell as ensuring the whole power train ofthe Jazz is more efcient, it also offers thedriver a smooth and effortless journey.
The CVT transmission is a standardfeature on the hybrid while it is availableas an option on 1.4 litre models, where, thanks to the improvements, it nowmatches the economy and emissions ofthe outgoing Jazz i-SHIFT, with a CO2value of just 125g/km.
Torque Converter
The biggest enhancement to the CVTin the revised Jazz petrol models is theaddition of a torque converter whichensures smooth, strong performanceat low speeds, and coupled with theuse of low friction components, bringsimpressive efciency.
Like a conventional automatic, the torqueconverter allows the Jazz to creep forwardwhen in gear and the brakes are notapplied.
Improvements to the way this is controlledmeans its optimised to suit immediateand changing driving requirements. It works by acting on information from aslope sensor located low in the centre ofthe car. This sensor ensures creep forceis as efciently low as possible when thebrakes are activated during idling or whendriving on at roads. This keeps engineloads low, allowing the driver to maintainmaximum control.
When a slope is detected creep forcereturns to full operation to ensure engineload is sufcient for a smooth pull awayfrom standstill.
The Jazz Hybrids CVT gearbox is thesame as that found in the Insight andfeatures starter clutches in place of thetorque converter.
Hill Start Assist
All CVT models feature Hill Start Assist
(HSA). When pulling away from standstillon an incline, HSA continues to applythe brakes for a moment as the drivermoves their foot from the brake pedal tothe accelerator, preventing the Jazz fromrolling back.
Paddle shift
The CVT transmission is also equippedwith paddle shifters on the rear of thesteering wheel to give manual control of
the ratios. When used in D mode thepaddles can bring the car into a lowerratio, for a kickdown effect, with the boxreturning to automatic shifting afterwards.
When the paddles are used in S modethey give full manual control over theselection of ratios, for acceleration orengine braking.
Manual
The 1.2 litre and 1.4 litre modelsare available with the 5-speed manualtransmission. Manual transmissionmodels feature a SIL (Shift IndicatorLight) within the centre of the rev counter(also found on the latest Accord) thatdetects whether there is surplus, or not
enough torque and provides the driverwith a visual prompt of the best gearshift points to maximise economy.

Suspension
The suspension on the 2011 Jazz featuresrevised settings to increase ride comfortand improve handling. And to complimentthese updates, the steering has been givenadditional resistance to improve on-centre feel, creating greater drivability.
The Jazzs rear suspension continues touse a compact H-shaped torsion beamwhich is more adept at absorbing bumpyand uneven road surfaces and means theload oor can be kept low, increasing
luggage capacity. The car also retains thelong wheelbase and wide front track tomaintain agility and stability.
The basic chassis of the Jazz Hybrid isidentical to that of the standard Jazz, however, the anti-roll bars and dampertuning have been optimised for the 70kgweight increase over the petrol car. Theresult is an improvement in ride comfortover the 2008 Jazz, increasing renement, particularly over poor road surfaces.
Steering renement
Already well respected for its lightnessand manoeuvrability around town, the 2011 Jazz benets from imp rovementsto steering feel at higher speeds.
Thanks to continuous improvementthe revised model has a much rmer, positive steering feel as speeds increaseto inspire a condent driving experience.
Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)
All Jazz models come equipped withHondas Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)system as standard. The system isdesigned to assist the driver inmaintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres byapplying braking to the right or left handwheels as necessary and managing theengine torque systems.
At its simplest level, VSA has a tractioncontrol function whereby it detects wheelslip under acceleration and coordinatesthe use of braking and engine torque toregain traction. In situations where thedriven wheels are on surfaces withdifferent levels of traction, such as apartially wet road surface, the systemapplies braking action to the wheel thats

All Jazz models, including the Hybrid, have been subject to Hondas rigorouscar-to-car crash testing in the R&Dcentre at Tochigi. These crash tests areconducted to enhance real world crashsafety, using a number of different modelswith different sizes and weights. By usinga range of vehicles, Honda is able toensure the Jazz is optimised to minimiseinjuries to the occupants in all vehicles
involved in the impact. The Jazzs Advanced CompatibilityEngineering (ACE) body structure is nowa well-established concept that is beingprogressively rolled out across theHonda range.
All Jazz models benet from highlyeffective technology which providesa protective cocoon for occupants in avariety of real-world crash conditions. These may include a frontal collisionbetween vehicles of differing heights, weights and frame construction.
A front polygonal main frame helps toprevent misalignment between vehiclesof different sizes and construction and
multiple energy absorbing pathwaysdisperse impact energy to preventcabin deformation.
Pedestrian protection
The Jazz also incorporates many of thepedestrian-protection design featuresalready familiar from recent Hondamodels, including windscreen wiper pivotsdesigned to break away on impact, energyabsorbing front wing mounts and bonnethinges, as well as an unobstructed areabeneath the bonnet allowing greaterspace for deformation.
Research shows that features suchas these dramatically improve apedestrians chance of survival ifstruck by a moving vehicle.
AirbagsDual front and side airbags are standardon all models, as are full length sidecurtain airbags and three-point seatbeltsin all ve seating positions (those in thefront have dual-stage pretensioners).
Yaw rate sensors are now tted todetect secondary vehicle movementafter an impact. The sensors triggerthe appropriate airbags protecting thedriver from impact with the B-pillarand reducing the severity of head andtemple injuries that can occur.
The front passenger airbag can alsobe deactivated to allow a rear facingchild seat to be tted to the front seatand the Jazz is equipped with seatbeltreminders for both the front and rearseats. Front seats are also tted withactive headrests to minimise thepotential for whiplash injuries.

Swindon swings into eco-action
Established in Swindon, Wiltshire in 1985,Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM)has the capacity to build up to 250,000cars a year. Its also one of Europesgreenest factories. The Jazz has beenbuilt at this plant since October 2009,and the revised petrol models willcontinue to be produced there.
Honda's manufacturing plant in Swindonplaces a huge focus on reducing theimpact of its activities on the environment. In August 2010, HUM achieved zero wasteto landll, and received a national awardrecognising the sustainable method inwhich this was achieved. This compareswith the situation in 1994 when over70kg manufacturing waste per carwas landlled.
Manufacturing processes are heavyusers of energy and HUM is takingsteps to reduce energy consumptionwhile also investigating ways to generatesustainable energy on-site.
Energy conservation and energygeneration projects are now part of
everyday life at the Swindon plantand contribute signicantly towardsreducing carbon emissions from thesite and reducing CO2 per unit toachieve Honda targets.
Supporting this, HUM is investigatingthe use of biomass for heat and energygeneration. Over 17 hectares of theenergy crop Miscanthus have beenplanted on site.
HUM is also testing the feasibility ofusing solar panels to generate electricitywith test installations of two types ofPhotovoltaic Solar panels, includingHonda's own brand, on the Engine
Plant roof.
Suzuka Factory
The Jazz Hybrid is manufacturedalongside other hybrid models at theSuzuka factory in Japan. This factoryis surrounded by over 100,000 Honda-planted trees, which absorb 800 tons ofCO2 per year. The factory roof features anextensive array of electricity generatingHonda Soltec solar panels to reducegrid electricity demands and thecarbon footprint.
The factory has also been designed toput zero waste into landll sites withmaximum use of recycling around theplant. One of the other key environmental
technologies is the cogeneration unitwhich generates both heat for theproduction facility and electricity. This ensures maximum efciency byremoving powerline losses, which areexperienced in using electricity generateda great distance from the point of use.
Battery Recycling
As youd expect, the Jazz Hybridsbattery pack is designed to last the lifeof the vehicle and is covered by a 5-yearwarranty, along with the rest of the IMAsystem. At the end of the vehicles life,or in the event of the pack becomingdamaged it can be recycled througha Honda dealership.
