Performance NotesHosanna To The Son Of David is a very energetic, rousing piece accompanying the procession of palms onPassion Sunday. Begin the accompaniment with percussion instruments—bass drum, hand drums (orbongos), wood block, finger cymbals, and tambourine—all of which, along with the guitar, can be carriedin procession. As the procession enters the church, piano, organ, and electric bass can be added to lift thepiece to a new level of power and majesty.
The bass drum grounds the rhythm and tempo of this piece. This is essential, especially when the processionis outdoors. The other percussion instruments add decoration and interest. These may easily be modifiedaccording to availability and personal preference.
The melody line of the refrain is embellished by a soprano descant and bass harmony. Add either or both toallow the piece to build in power and energy.
The verses are perhaps best performed by the choir or a small group, but the assembly certainly may join inas they learn the part. As on the recording, the women may effectively sing a verse in two-part harmony forthe sake of variety.
