Demartek study validates HPE 3PAR Peer Persistent Checksum technology
3PAR Persistent Checksum is a cool feature that protects data from media or transmission errors
end-to-end. This is becoming even more important as flash arrays are required to handle
thousands of IOPS and Petabytes of data. Demartek tested the effectiveness of Persistent
Checksum by injecting bit errors into a real FC data stream and measuring the impact to
performance. The findings are good news:
HPE 3PAR Persistent Checksum effectively identifies and corrects data integrity issues
in the SAN, preventing potential application impacts
HPE 3PAR Persistent Checksum logic had virtually no impact on the all-flash
performance of the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8450 Storage array

Frequently Asked Questions
HPE Servers How is licensing changing with Windows Server 2016? The licensing of Datacenter and Standard Edition will shift from processors (Processor + CAL) to physical cores (Cores + CAL). With Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and Standard Edition: All physical cores in the server must be licensed. Servers are licensed based on the number of processor cores in the physical server.
A minimum of sixteen core licenses is required for each server.
A minimum of eight core licenses is required for each physical processor.
Windows Server base licenses from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) cover sixteen
cores, additional licenses for both Standard and Datacenter Editions are available in
packs of two, four, and sixteen cores. Windows Server 2016 Essentials Edition will continue to be licensed per server, for platforms with up to two processors and maximum of 25 users or 50 devices. No Windows Server CALs are required. Is it possible to mix power supplies in the c7000 to obtain the right amount of power? Mixing power supplies is not supported. It is only possible, for a short time, and with the purpose of upgrading the power supplies as explained in the HP BladeSystem - Mixing Different Types of Power Supplies in a c7000 Enclosure Is Not Supported.
Is OneView v3 available for Customers? Where can I found the User Guides? Yes, it is already available and can be downloaded at the SW depot. The documentation can be found in this link.
Do HPE Ethernet adapters support NIC Teaming? Currently this is a feature implemented on the OS level. Most Operating Systems supports NIC teaming. NIC teaming used to be implemented in the adapter with specific drivers and software developed by the NICs vendors. Today NIC teaming is a feature enabled in all HPE network adapters that relays on the support by the Operating system.
Is it possible to create more than one RAID volume with the B140 controller?
Yes, the HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i RAID Controller User Guide confirms the support for both RAID levels and up to 10 LUNs or logical volumes.
HPE Storage Does HPE StoreVirtual VSA support NVME PCIe Workload Accelerator cards? Yes, StoreVirtual VSA can virtualize other storage options, such as PCIe-based flash cards, as long as they are supported by the server model and hypervisor. For more information please see the HPE StoreVirtual VSA design and configuration guide.
Please advise what option we have if we need to connect an MSA 2040 with 10GB iSCSI to a 10G BASE-T switch? You can place another switch in between that has both 10GbE SFP+ ports (to the MSA) and 10GbE BASE-T ports (to the other switch). A (3rd party) media converter could also be used. Alternatively, if applicable, you might want to check if direct attach is supported. This is OS dependent and it can be verified in SPOCK (Single Point of Connectivity Knowledge for HPE
Storage Products) here.
While running linear storage on MSA 2040 we would like to know what happens if you run out of space and no more snapshots can be written?
In linear storage, pointers to source-volume data for snapshots and any unique data written to a snapshot are stored in snap pools. By default, snap pools are configured to automatically expand when they become 90% full. What happens next depends on the policy you set for the snap pool. The default policy for the Critical threshold (when the snap pool is 98% full and data loss is imminent) is: Delete all snapshots. Multiple other options are available to set, please see the
MSA 2040 SMU Guide, chapter Snap pool properties on p.249 for more information.
What are the utilization limits on LeftHand systems? At what utilization limits do you start to notice problems (or warnings)?
According to the 12.6 HPE StoreVirtual Storage User Guide, “When a cluster is over-provisioned, thin provisioning carries the risk that an application server will fail a write if the storage cluster has run out of disk space. The LeftHand OS software adds utilization and over-provisioned events as the cluster approaches 100% utilization. You can add capacity to the cluster or delete unneeded snapshots to accommodate additional volume growth.”
The defaults for warnings are 90% for a warning to the host that storage system space is almost full. Critical default is 95% when no writes can be performed: 12.6 HPE StoreVirtual LeftHand OS Command Line Interface User Guide.
Can you please give us part number of the compact flash card found in our P2000 G3 array? It has failed.
According to this CUSTOMER ADVISORY, if you experience a Compact Flash card failure, HPE recommends replacing the Compact Flash card with part number 768079-001. Is Virtual Fabrics enabled by default within HPE B-series switches?
To use the Virtual Fabrics features, you must first enable Virtual Fabrics on the switch. Enabling Virtual Fabrics creates a single logical switch in the physical chassis. This logical switch is called the default logical switch. The default logical switch initially contains all of the ports in the physical chassis. After you enable Virtual Fabrics, you can create up to seven additional logical switches, depending on the switch model. The default logical switch always exists. You can add and delete other logical switches, but you cannot delete the default logical switch unless you disable Virtual Fabrics. Is 3PAR OS 3.2.2 MU2 supported with Microsoft Windows Server 2016 operating system?
Currently Microsoft Windows Server 2016 machines are only supported with 3PAR OS 3.2.2 MU3. Customers are highly advised to upgrade their HPE StoreServ 3PAR to the latest available 3PAR OS version, this provides robust stability, newer features and above all continuously improve the overall experience. Is there any performance impact from using 3PAR self-encrypting drives? What about in Remote Copy or Peer Persistence configurations?
Please refer to the HPE 3PAR StoreServ Data-At-Rest Encryption white paper. As stated in the White Paper, HPE extensively tested the Self-Encrypting Drives (SEDs) and compared the performance with non-encrypting drives and found no performance differences for any I/O profile. This is possible because the drives perform the encryption on specialised hardware prior to writing to the media.
When considering the use of SEDs with Remote Copy or Peer Persistence, the same is true – there will be no additional performance impact compared to non-SEDs. Although there is no performance impact, it’s important to consider that 3PAR SEDs provide encryption for “data at rest” only. Data is not encrypted “in flight” as it is replicated between arrays. Additionally, if data must be encrypted on both source and target arrays, both arrays must have SEDs and the encryption license installed. If any of the arrays in the Remote Copy configuration are not encryption-enabled, the data will be stored unencrypted on that array. Can TecHub size and make configurations for the HPE T950 and TFinity ExaScale (Spectra Logic) Tape Libraries?
No, TecHub is not able to create Bills of Materials (BOMs) for the HPE T950 and TFinity ExaScale (Spectra Logic) Tape Libraries.
Quotes for these products must be created with the help of Spectra Logic Sales personnel. To get a BOM for T950 or TFinity parts, follow this process:

HPE Networking For HPE Aruba Central support subscriptions, can we add together multiple services for extended support periods? For example adding together a 3year and a 5year subscription? The subscription services cannot be added together. The maximum term is 5 years. Upon expiration, they could then purchase the additional 3 year service. Do we support SSH tunnel traversal through the HPE MSR routers? We confirm SSH tunnels are not supported. Could you state the OSPF scalability for HPE 5510 Series Switches? The OSPF sdcalability numbers are: Number of areas: 16 Number of interfaces per area: 1K Number of neighbors per interface: 80 Number of IPv4 routes: 32K Number of IPv6 routes: 16K Can you confirm if Draft-Rosen Multicast VPNs are supported on the HPE 5510HI Series? We confirm this standard is not supported and implemented in HPE 5510HI Series. Can we confirm virtual cable testing (VCT) support on HPE Aruba 2540 Series? We confirm the Aruba 2540 supports VCT - Aruba-2540-24G-4SFP (config) # test cable-diagnostics Can you state the MAC and ARP scalability for the new HPE Aruba 2540 Switch Series? The number of ARP entries on a 2540 switch is 25K while the switch supports up to 16K MAC addresses. Can you confirm if the HPE 10500 Switch Series support DVMRP and Hierarchical DVMRP? DVMRP and HDVMRP are not supported, as they are old multicast routing protocols. We recommend to use PIM. PIM-DM&SM are supported.
