Setting the Record Straight By Prof Des Laubscher - IID President
At the end of every year we usually reflect on what might and
might not have been. There is no doubt this has been a very
successful, productive and vibrant year for the Institute. One of
the best ways to measure this is through membership growth
and the IID continues to grow its membership month by month
while most other professional bodies are showing loss of
membership.
As already mentioned this is also a time to take stock and
reflect on areas that have not been successful. At a recent
meeting in Gauteng, held especially to allow Members from the
region the opportunity to voice their grievances and frustrations,
some interesting points were brought up. National Council have
taken cognisance of these issues and we will be having a
special meeting in January to address them.

Setting the Record Straight
One of the grievances that I dont believe deserves
any further discussion is the belief that Design South
Africa (DSA) members should not have been allowed
to join the South African Guild of Interior Designers
(SAGID). The reason given is that they brought no
financial benefit to the new entity and SAGID lost the
money they brought across. I would like to assure old
SAGID members that the money is still in the bank
account, but this is not the point. The real issue is that
both SAGID and DSA were at the cross roads 1 no
membership growth and offering very little benefit to
members. To this end SAGID commissioned Nicola
Hatfield to conduct a survey to determine a road
forward. At the same time I was working on bringing
all design disciplines together under one umbrella in
order to become a bigger and more efficient body truly
representing the interests of all designers in this
country.
It was at this point that I met with Nicola and we
discussed the possibility of creating a new body to
represent the interests of all interior disciplines, from
decorators to designers to interior architects. The rest
is history. By mutual consent through discussions held
between the relevant interested parties the IID was
born, not as a merger, but as a new body embracing
the demands of our industry, creating a body to cater
for the needs of our Members. I know this was the
right thing to do and the proof lies within our
achievements to date.
Wishing all our Members a very prosperous and happy
2009.

IID Attends SACAP CPD Stakeholders Forum
The IID along with all the other Voluntary Association
(VA) Members, representing the Architects,
Architectural Technologists, Building Designers and
Draughtsmen, recently attended the SACAP Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) Stakeholders Forum.
The aim of the forum was to bring together all the
stakeholders involved, including the Education
Institutions, to address the challenges of delivering
CPD workshops across South Africa.
Continuing Professional Development is compulsory for
all architectural professionals and covers the
improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills
as well as the development of personal qualities
necessary for the execution of professional and
technical duties.
Facilitating education workshops is a key focus area
for the IID, and whilst not mandatory, is a value added
benefit that Members have been asking for. We have
however encountered several challenges in setting up
these workshops and it was interesting to see that we
are not alone in this area.
It was also very reassuring to see the willingness of
the other VAs to collaborate with the IID by assisting
us to implement CPD activities as well as allow our
Members to attend their workshops. There was also
talk of doing joint Road Shows which will assist us to
develop closer working relationships with the Built
Environment professionals. We will continue these
discussions in the New Year and keep Members
updated □
Built Environment Professions Bill Withdrawn
Whilst the IID has been provisionally accepted as a
Voluntary Association (VA) member of SACAP, we are
still working on addressing the issue of Interior
Architects / Interior Designers being restricted in their
ability to submit plans to Council.
Unfortunately our efforts have been hampered by the
proposed new Built Environment Professions Bill which
aimed to accelerate transformation of professions, such
as architecture and quantity surveying, and establish a
new South African Council for the Built Environment
(which would incorporate all the exiting professional
councils and transform them into subsidiary boards).
The good news is that the controversial Bill has just
been withdrawn, by the newly appointed Public Works
Minister Geoff Doidge, as more time is required to
address the various concerns that were raised before
the Bill is re-tabled in Parliament. The IID hopes that
this reprieve will give us the opportunity to strengthen
our position with SACAP and well keep Members
informed of our progress here □

being appointed, please let us know before 10

NEWS & V I EWS
QUARTZ CARPET ADDS A
NEW FLOOR ING D IMENS ION TO THE ARABELLA SPA
The flooring industry never stands still. Developments in
modern technologies, improved colour fastness, stain
resistance and the adoption of environmentally friendly
practices are all factors carefully considered before making
the correct flooring choice.
Nothing compares to a floor when it comes to the feel, the
comfort, the sheer opulence it provides, the ease of
installation and maintenance and the versatility of use. It is
for these very reasons that Quartz Carpet was the floor of
choice for the recent upgrade of the Arabella Spa at the
Westin Grand Cape Town Arabella Quays.
The brief - Due to the nature of the environment, warmth,
versatility and cleanliness were the three most important
requirements. The floor also had to be seamless, non-slip,
aesthetically pleasing and tried and tested. Chief Engineer,
Andrew Gartshore, stressed the importance of hygiene and
attention to detail that would be in keeping with the hotels
international five (5) star reputation.
Quartz Carpets previous installation at the Arabella Spa in
Kleinmond was a mere brand reinforcement of the product
within the Westin Grand Hotel Group and other installations
such as the Paris Spas, Wellness Warehouses and Librisa
Spa at the Mount Nelson Hotel added to the brands
credibility.
The team - The project team comprised Battir Construction
who was the main contractor, Source Interior Brand
Architects, HNV Project Managers and Quartz Carpet.
The project - The project entailed the upgrading of the
existing spa that was tired and furnishing old materials to a
new spa with a fresh look and appeal, extra facilities and
new products.
Quartz Carpet was contracted to screed six hundred (600)
sqm of two to three (2-3) mm natural stone aggregate floor
throughout the spa, four hundred (400) linear metres of
screeded skirtings and thirty square metres (30m2) of
verticals.
Quartz Carpet flooring had to be laid over the existing floor
and due to its minimal thickness of only 6mm, it did not
impact on existing fixtures and doorways. Quartz Carpet is
the only floor product that can be safely applied directly
over tiles without having to chop them up and re-screed
before flooring.
The colours chosen were essential to the design process.
Colour interacts with form, scale and material to complete
the design experience. Upon entering the spa, the
coolness of the colour Graphite greets you in a soothing
manner in anticipation of the pending ultimate indulgence.
Moving away from reception towards the interior of the spa,
the dark and sophisticated colour of Diesel beckons you
deeper and meets up with Cauliflower, perfectly capturing
the warmth of the heated pool, jacuzzi and sun-filled
lounging area. A beautiful warm brown tone flows down
the corridors outside the treatment areas and into four (4)
of the treatment rooms enhancing the natural ambience of
each individual room.
Cont on page 8
iid insight e-newsletter page 8 www.iidprofessions.com
Abiding to safety regulations were of the utmost importance
as the spa is located on the 19th floor, alongside the world-
renowned The Westin Executive Club Restaurant, which
continued to trade amidst renovations. Working together with
the hotel management ensured that Quartz Carpet
conformed to the health and safety regulations and as a
result their work had zero impact on the operational capacity
of the hotel.
So why choose Quartz Carpet for your needs?
A revolutionary flooring system that is completely seamless
and 92% natural, Quartz Carpet comprises natural imported
glacial aggregate that is tinted and then blended with clear
resins. With a choice of 34 shades, hundreds of colour
combinations and 4 stone aggregate sizes, creative options
are endless.
Other than its obvious natural beauty, Quartz Carpet offers
incredible low maintenance. Completely scratch resistant, its
measurement of hardness rating sits comfortably at eight (8),
not far off from the diamond rating of ten (10). UV stable
and stain resistant, Quartz Carpet is equally suitable to
outside areas and microbial tests show that the flooring is
suitable to wet areas such as swimming pool surrounds,
aquatic centres, saunas etc. as well as auto showrooms,
hotel and conference centres, restaurants and bars. Fire
retardant, the product will not enable a fire to spread from
the source to other areas.
Quartz Carpet is also endorsed by the American Disability
Act (for non-slip) for use on walkways, around pools, wet
areas such as bathrooms and ramps as it is slip resistant. A
wet and dry vacuum once a month in high-traffic areas
ensures that the floor maintains its original appearance.
Pricing ranges from R550 per sqm (ex VAT) for indoor
flooring and R700 per sqm (ex VAT) for outdoor flooring, fully
installed (Price may vary according to size of project) □
Restrooms were given special consideration. Graphite has
been used in the shower trays for aesthetic purposes whilst
the calmness of Cauliflower flows throughout the main floor
area of the bathrooms. The urinals in the mens bathrooms
are pore-filled for hygiene considerations. Quartz Carpet
has passed the relevant microbial tests and thus resists
fungal growth, making it compliant with spa health
regulations.
Challenges faced - The initial and major challenge was the
turnaround time of the project. Originally committing to a
four (4) week lead time, Quartz Carpet were given a
maximum of two (2) weeks to complete the job. A team of
eight (8) set about putting in the necessary extra hours and
the project was completed within a record 10 days!! A
remarkable achievement considering no other upmarket
flooring tile or comparative can be laid within that timeframe.
Re-tiling the spa would have taken two to three months
which would have resulted in a huge loss of income for the
spa.
Attention to detail, especially with regards to the finishes,
technical detail and skirting presented its own challenges as
the product had to be screeded over various substrates such
as wood, shutter board, concrete, tile and asbestos.
Excellent expert workmanship from the Quartz Carpet team
ensured that the outcome is a first-class floor showing no
sign of the various underlying substrates.
