Getting to Vals by Train and PostBusThe route through the mountains to Vals was a powerfulinspiration in his search for a formal vocabulary of architecturePeter Zumthor writes in his book Therme Vals. This aspect ofthe journey has become a ritual for many visitors who time andagain choose to come to the Vals Valley by train and PostBus.
The journey begins when the traveler boards a RhaetianRailway (RhB) train in Chur. Just after the Rhine Plains nearReichenau this rough-terrain, narrow-gauge railway (trackwidth: 1 meter) makes its way through the greatest rock slide area of the Alps (volume: 15 km3) . There are no villages or streets in this canyon; impressive engineering structures wereneeded to build the railway through the compacted Mesozoiclimestone cliffs.
The train route follows the path of the Vorderrhein, whichhas carved its way through the fallen rock over the millennia. This pristine canyon is called the Ruinaulta (Rom. ruina = land -slide + aulta = high). Washed out limestone pinnacles rise upfrom the up to 350-meter-high white cliffs, alders and pines cling to the concrete-gray scree fields, dead trees lie strewnacross gravel islands in the roiling river. In the U-shaped Vorder -rhein glacial valley the train pulls into the little town of Ilanz, where the PostBus stands waiting.
The road to Vals leads south, taking one through a land -scape of soft-contoured Bündner schist to yet another valley. On one half of this valley the mountainside is in constant motion, the church in Peiden has wandered 16 meters downhill in the last century. The scenery grows wilder, rock-slide and avalancheshelters protect the road. Between St. Martin and Vals the valleynarrows to a steep ravine, jagged cliffs flank the road above the Valserrhein. From here, one can see the crystalline, mineral-rich gneisses of the Adula nappe. And suddenly the ravine opens up onto a wide valley: end of the line. Vals.

Therapeutic SpringsThe Vals thermal and mineral springs originate on the left side of the valley, 20 to 25 meters above the valley floor on the hoteland spa grounds. Drilled in 1980, the most important wellis located south of the Hotel Therme and protected by a modernstructure.
The mineral spring water is used by both the Hotel undThermalbad Bad Vals ag and the Valser Mineralquellen ag. The springs are owned by the community of Vals.
Temperature and MineralizationFor millions of years water has collected in five billion tons of Bündner schist, it has seeped through cracks and crevicesdown to a depth of 1,000 meters and penetrated the dolomite rock layer, from whence it finally resurfaces at the foot of Piz Aul.
The water tapped by the new borehole drilled in 1980emerges at a temperature of 30° C. These thermal springsin Vals are the only ones in Grisons and are fed by a watercourse 90 meters below ground. This source runs through Trias strata,a regional phenomenon that can be observed in the Vals Valley and Lugnez.
An analysis of the chemical composition of the water clearly shows that mineralization occurs in the Trias stratabecause all the dissolved particles found in the thermal water are also present in the various rocks of the Trias strata: dolomite, lime stone, white marble with quartz and cellulardolomite, and in between, gray slate. The concentration of the mineralization of the water is 1,918 milligrams| liter and can be broken down as follows: calcium 436, magnesium 54, sodium 10.7, chloride 2.5, fluoride 0.63, iron 6, iodide 0.02,potassium 2.0, manganese 0.03, hydrogen carbonate 386, sulfate 990, silicic acid 25.

The Selva HouseSeven stories high, the Selva House, located in front of the Hotel Therme, is connected to the main building by a coveredpassage. This means you can go to the spa in just your bathrobe (provided by us) .The Selva House retains its delicate, whitesixties-style architecture. Here, too, we have already star ted to renovate the interior.
“Selva Stucco”The 20 Selva House rooms redesigned by Peter Zumthor are fresh and bursting with color, we call them “Selva Stucco”: the walls were done in red, blue, or yellow Venetian stucco-lustro! The dark wooden parquet flooring is warm and elegant.Traver tine paves the showers, which open directly into the living quarters. The Selva Stucco rooms are no larger than before, but now you can luxuriate in a king-size bed with satin sheets. (The bed is high enough for you to easily stow your bags andsuitcases beneath it. Or use the hallway cabinets set aside for this purpose. They are room-color coded and can be locked.)There is Valser mineral water, a stereo with a choice of cds, bath robe, pool slippers and high-speed wireless Internet in each room. tv available upon request and free of charge.
Selva roomsThese rooms are vaguely reminiscent of ship cabins. We havepacked as much as possible into the space available. In somerooms you will still find the original beds mounted on walls as they were in the sixties. All rooms include a bathroom|wcand balcony. Radio, bathrobe, pool slippers, and upon request a tv are provided free of charge.
Ancillary buildings – the Zerfreila and Tomül HousesOnly a short walk from the Therme. The rooms are appointed likethe Selva Rooms. Bathrobe and pool slippers can be rented at the spa desk.
The Buildings
The Hotel ThermeThe outward appearance of the curved building has changedlittle since the sixties; instead, its transformation into the new hotel is expressed on the inside. Without altering the corestructure of the hotel, Peter Zumthor has completely refurbished40 rooms and enlarged the Red Restaurant. The result is not a brash display of modern architecture but the preservation ofthe style of the hotel in refreshing and unexpected ways.
The Red Restaurant and the terraceThe extension of the Red Restaurant sets for th the façade of the front section of the main building, blending seamlessly intothe existing architecture. And yet there is an almost baroqueextravagance about the new space with its red and blue stucco-lustro wall, silver ceiling, canopy, and its long tables in the middle of the room. The leather chairs, tables, and black lacquercounters were designed by Peter Zumthor, and he enlarged and furnished the terrace to match.
The “Temporaries”| Hotel ThermeThe basic furnishings – black lacquer pieces designed by PeterZumthor – are the same in all rooms, and yet each room is unique:bright kilims or gabbehs, twentieth-century furniture classicsfrom Eileen Gray to Mies van der Rohe to Le Corbusier to JasperMorrison, pure silk cur tains in different colors to match thecarpet. You sleep in a king-size bed with linen sheets (and twoblankets, if you like), the chocolates are made on the premises by our own confectioner, and there are fresh apples and flowersin every room. We also provide a stereo with a selection of cds (tv upon request and free of charge) and, of course, a bathrobe, pool slippers, minibar, and high-speed wireless Internet.

Well-Being
Therapy and BeautyAt the turnstile as you enter the Therme Vals there is a brassplaque pointing the way: “Therapie.” A stairway to the left leads below the bathing level to a floor dedicated to the well-being of our guests. The therapies and treatments offered here are designed to relieve tension and pamper: masks, exfoliation, baths, wraps, and massages.
Here, the Vals gneiss is polished and smooth – velvetyconcrete walls with noble brass doors on the mountain side; the treatment area on the valley side. Behind the brilliant blue Murano glass doors are the separate massage rooms, their walls and ceilings coated with metallic paint. A small square window frames the landscape: the guest’s own personal picture.
Our competent, well-trained therapists and beauty staffensure a range of high-quality treatments. Not only will you find classic massage, Thalasso and aromatherapy, but you canalso book Lomi Lomi, or Abhyanga.
After your treatment, relax on a leather couch, have a cup of herbal tea, gaze through a large window at the opposite side of the valley, at the hillside strewn withsmall barns.
Let our experienced beauticians pamper you with a range of treatments including exfoliation, modelage facials, face masks, facial massages, Thalasso treatments, faciallymphatic drainage, and manicures. Our beauty center is on the same floor as the spa desk, next to the passageway to the Selva House.

Bathing at the Therme Vals is much more than merely dippinginto the waters of the only mineral hot springs in Grisons.Anyone who has been here and experienced the water ofVals at the unique thermal baths designed by Peter Zumthorknows the difference and inevitably returns, sooner or laterfinding his or her way back through the narrow, windingmountain gorge.
“It is different ever y time,” a guest exclaims, beamingenthusiasm. “The Therme Vals gives me a very personal senseof revelation.” And it is true, the bathing experience at theTherme Vals caters to the individual and is strongly influencedby one’s own subjective perception. Peter Zumthor hasbrilliantly created a world in which personal, introspectiveimpressions converge with objective beauty.
Bathing at the Therme Vals means immersion in designperfection, in the velvety softness of soothing water, in thepureness of clean mountain air, and in the tranquil, untamedbeauty of the Vals Valley, in a world of light and shadows. Andat the Therme Vals one finds an ar tfully rendered expressionof this harmonious interplay of light and shadows, which iswhy this award-winning building has received yet anotherprize: in Januar y 2010 Peter Zumthor won the Daylight Award, the generously endowed Swiss architecture prize sponsoredby the Velux Stiftung.
For those of you who want to enjoy the experience of the Therme Vals at its best, recommend booking a room at thehotel that shares the same name and find the time – to forget time and to take full advantage of the sensual pleasures awaiting you at the Hotel Therme Vals.
