2. From researching very well known music magazines within the industry I found names such as Billboard, Classical, NME, Vibe. From this it is clear to me that music magazine tend to use short names which will be easily remembered by potential readers. When analysing my survey results it was clear to me that readers still rely on the name of the magazine before they buy it. From this I gained some ideas of what I should call my magazine. v Throwback v Throwback Thursday v Keara MCD v Star v Groove v The night v From analysing these names I felt that Throwback Thursday would be the most appropriate name for my magazine I chose this name over the names stated above because I believe that Keara MCD is a very simple name and readers would not be able to relate this name. Also Star, Groove and The night are very simple and I felt that this name would not fit well with the theme of my magazine. However Throwback Thursday was the perfect name for my magazine as when analysing my survey analysis I gained the knowledge that people like a magazine to be published a magazine weekly and from this name it gave the perfect opportunity to publish my magazine every Thursday. Also from this name I am then able to put all music genres in my magazine not just information about new music. From choosing this name I was able to ensure I was open to what I want to put into my magazine. v List of possible names for my magazine: 3. From researching many magazines I felt that many magazine particularly only focus on one genre type throughout the whole of the magazine, although I have a main genre for my music magazine I believe that it is necessary for me to have some other types of music which would help to gain more readers for my magazine. I have decided to interview: v Lydia Hughes- As my main R&B singer to interview. v Rihanna v Drake v Chris Brown v Beyonce v Bruno Mars v Aloe Blacc As my main model is Lydia Hughes throughout I have decided I would like to interview her as a R&B singer this is because on most magazine covers, the model on the front is usually the person who is interviewed for the main article. This lead me to choosing Lydia this is to follow consistency throughout which will lead to my magazine being more professional and also leading my magazine to follow conventions from all other magazines. This means for my magazine will be interviewing Lydia for my magazine. List of bands, pop groups, rock groups who could potentially be interviewed for my magazine: 4. The model in which I have chosen for my magazine is Lydia Hughes, I have decided to use Lydia as my only model because I felt that Lydia would be able to show dominance if she is alone and I wanted to focus on one person throughout my magazine. The angles and camera conventions in which I have chosen to use for my magazine is close up and medium shot with the shot angles at eye-level. This is to ensure that though out my magazine the main focus on the images is Lydia's facial expressions and the potential prop which I will make Lydia hold throughout the image being taken. A close up with let the potential readers connect with the models eyes and facial expression which may draw the attention into the model. Also the model will be able to clearly be seen throughout. I have also decided to use a mid shot, which will allow for Lydia's top half of her body will be seen. This will allow readers to focus everything such as Lydia holding a prop rather than just having Lydia's face throughout. I believe that using only one model throughout and keeping to medium shot and close up shot at a high level angle will be the most effective way to gain readers attention and to allow them to connect. List of photos shoots/models/angles/conventions to use in my magazine: 5. When researching different music magazines, I came across many of different variety of music magazine which focused on different genres within their magazine. The music magazine in which most influenced me where, Vibe, Billboard, Q and NME. I was most influenced by these magazines because they are extremely well known within the music industry which leads them to have a high reader attraction. I was also influenced with these magazine because they have all worked with the worlds most well known singers, rappers and bands etc. such as Beyonc, Drake, Rihanna, Artic Monkeys and Adele. They are extremely well known Within todays music industry and these artists enjoy working with that particular magazine. Also many of these magazine focus on one model (unless it is a band) and have them interviewed to feature within the main story. This lead to my thinking of just to have one model for my magazine. Also many of these use the same house colours, layout within each magazine which leads to consistency throughout, this lead me to planning to have the same colours throughout my magazine, this will lead to a professional magazine with a highly consistent look throughout. I also gained knowledge from these magazine to find what interesting things they include within their magazines such as posters and competitions, this leads to the thinking of including these within my magazine. This could attract more readers if these are shown to be offered on the front cover of my magazine. What other magazines have influenced my thinking and why? 6. When conducting my survey, I asked the question to my potential readers , How much are you willing to pay for a music magazine?. 70% of my potential readers chose the answer of 2.00-2.99 . This gave me an understanding that they would be willing to pay a price of anything lower but would not pay any more. For my magazine I have chosen to price it at 2.50, this is because of the knowledge gained when questioning my potential readers. Also from my survey I found out that my target audience is 16-30 year olds, this also leads me to choosing this price, because it is evident that people of this age may not have the money to pay for an expensive magazine and as this age is my target audience I need to make sure that the magazine is accessible to them to read at a price in which they can afford. How much am I going to charge for my magazine and why? 7. Front cover: The content which will be on my front cover includes, one main image which will be my model Lydia. This will be used to entice people in to read my magazine. My front cover will also include a masthead which will consist of my name for my magazine Throwback Thursday. Also this will include a barcode, price, two straplines, logo, tag line and cover line. I have chosen to include all of these conventions to follow the usual magazines that are already developed. This will follow the rules such as, the masthead will be placed at the very top of the magazine cover. I will place the image to the left of the front cover as this is the typical way in which the eye flows from the top right of the page to the bottom right of the page. The cover lines will be placed next to the main image, this will ensure that potential readers will know the stories which are going to be inside. This may influence the readers if the stories are interesting. Table of contents: Within my contents page I am going to add two pictures, I have decided to only add to pictures as I dont want the contents page to be to full and hard to read. The images will be of my model Lydia to express that all her stories are inside the magazine. I will include a headline contents page I will include page number for each section so that it is clear where readers need to go if they want to read that particular section. This will be situated with the sub headings my subheadings will include a short part of what's going to be on the specific pages. I am also going to include an email and website address in which will make my magazine more realistic to tell their stories. Double page spread: The content in which will be on my double page spread is main image which will be situated on the left of the double page spread this image will be of my model Lydia. I will also include a headline Lydia Hughes, I will also include a sub heading and a strapline. I will then conduct an interview will Lydia and write her story on the left side of the double page spread which will be in columns. The content of the interview will be trying to understand more about Lydia's music career and how life has been since she has begun her music What content will be on my Front Cover, Table of Contents and my Double Page Spread? Why? 8. Final decisions 9. The music genre I have chosen for my magazine is R&B, I have chosen this genre for many reasons, the first is when analysing my survey in which was conducted by potential readers, it was evident that 80% of those asked most listened to R&B, also when I asked which magazine are you most likely to read? the answers that were given was Billboard magazine. From analysing this magazine it is clear that billboards main focus is R&B and modern music this is shown through their models consisting of Drake, Rihanna and Beyonc who are modern well known artists. This gave me a clear indication that when conducting my survey my potential readers most like the genre of R&B. I have decided to focus on R&B as my main music genre for many reasons not only my survey but that R&B is the most listened to music by todays younger generation which means that I would be able to focus on this genre at todays youth generation. Also as being part of a younger generation myself I believe that I would be able to portray this genre of music throughout. Although I have chosen to use R&B as my main focus of genre, I would like to give more music type than just focus on one particular genre and with R&B potentially being in a niche market, I want to make my magazine appeal to a larger target audience, this is why I have decided to feature some old ways in which how music was listened to before IPods, YouTube ect was invented. I will show this through my model Lydia holding a record, this will emphasise the way in which music was listened to. Overall, my final decision is that my genre for my magazine is going to be R&B with some elements of Older R&B and how this used to be listened to. What music Genre and why? 10. A target audience is a group of people in which I am trying to aim my music magazine at. This means that I have to make sure that everything I include will aim primarily at my target audience and their needs and wants for my particular music magazine. Gender: I have chosen to aim my magazine at both Male and Female because I believe that my magazine can aim at both genders successfully. Although my model is a girl the overall content throughout my magazine is going to be able to appeal to both genders. Age: I have chosen to aim my music magazine at 16-30 year olds, this is because of the genre of my music magazine which is R&BI feel that the age in which I have chosen would listen and like this genre the most rather than older ages over 30. Also as being within this age group myself I feel that I would be able to add more to my magazine as I have knowledge myself as to what I would like to see in a magazine. Also when conducting my music survey I found that the people interviewed most wanted to know about upcoming festivals and celebrity interviews, which again gave me an indication of this age as 16-30 year olds always want to know the latest gossip of different celebrities which is going to be featured within my magazine. This is why I have chosen the age of my target audience to be 16-30 year olds. Also people within this age group tend to talk a lot about different music, celebrities and magazine which could gain some advertisement for music magazine as Word-of-mouth form of advertising. Who is your target audience and why? 11. When deciding my final decisions I had to research each part to come up with my final decisions , this was done through many different ways including: v v Survey: I created a survey and got 20 people of my potential readers for my magazine, these well then al filed in and analysed. From this I gained the knowledge for the genre for my magazine, target audience age, gender, what the content of my music magazine is going to be and the institution which is most listened to. This lead to the final decisions of my target audience and genre of my music magazine. I also learnt that there was a gap in the market for a magazine that was oublished weekly and only contained music, this lead to the idea that my magazine would be published every Thursday hence the name Throwback Thursday. v v Music magazines: I also researched many other music magazines which consisted of, Billboard, Vibe, NME, Q and classical (As seen in my LIARR analysis). From this I was able to gain more knowledge at what other music magazines contain within their magazine and how they will appeal to their target audience. Model: From viewing other magazines I was able to see how their models were dressed, their makeup, props and how this was consistent with the whole magazine. From this I decided that my model Lydia Hughes would be wearing a black top with a large gold necklace. Her makeup will consist of bold red lips, I wanted this so that her face would stand out from the rest of her body. From this I have also chosen to have Lydia holding a record and wearing headphones. I believe that this will add consistency throughout as the model will consist of the different stories within the magazine. What research have you done to provide evidence of your decision? 12. Institution I believe that IPC would be interested in to publish my music magazine this is because IPC is extremely well known within the UK which is where I will be basing my music magazine. Also because IPC publish music magazines such as NME they are clearly a well known and trusted music magazine within the music industry. I believe that I could bring some new elements to IPC publishing company such as combining new music with some old music. This suggests that I would be able to show that I could add something new which may attract more readers. From doing this IPC institution may lead to a larger target audience because the magazine is not just focused on modern music. This means that an element of my magazine would be able to bring something new to the magazine. IPC media publish many other magazines including NME and guitar and bass. Although guitar and bass is not part of my genre, the NME magazines that they produce fit in extremely well with what my target audience want. For example they always have modern artists, exclusive interviews which fit in well with my magazines and what I include.
