The Vice-Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi is a good ex-
ample of a silent achiever. He is accommodating but principled and firm, a veritable team play-
er, visionary team leader and an architect of modern Unimaid. This time around, his telescope
focuses on the Unimaid Bulletin, which is a true testimony of this acclamation. He envisaged to en-
hance the impact of the Bulletin on the University community and make it an informative window
to the outside world. It is against this background that he reconstituted the Editorial Board of the
Bulletin and facilitated a renewed vigour to ensure that the goals and objectives of the instru-
ment establishing the Bulletin are achievable. In pursuance to this objectives, the Bulletin will
henceforth be a monthly publication and accessible on the University official website
(www.unimaid.edu.ng).
On a sad note, the University lost its illustrious staff and students in the last few weeks. The Uni-
versity community are thus united in grief, and urged to accept death as a reality of life. Accept-
ing the existence of death will make us be prepared to handle grief and bereavement that
comes along with death. Death is more universal than life itself, because everyone dies, but not
everyone lives. Death is a debt that all of us here and those yet unborn must pay, at the ap-
pointed time. When we were born, we cried and the world rejoiced. We should endeavor to live
a life in a manner so that when we die the world cries and we rejoice. May their souls rest in
peace, and may God in his infinite mercy and grace, grant the University community and the
families of the deceased, the solace and fortitude to bear the loss; and prayed for quick recov-
ery of the injured among the victims of the tragic motor accident.

T he Executive Governor of Borno State Hon. Kashim Shettima has ob-served that despite the insurgency
that bedeviled the State and the meagre resources at his disposal the administration has been able to build over forty model schools equipped with digi-tal information and communication equipment across the state as well as a state university. The Governor disclosed this when the Vice-Chancellor, University of Maiduguri Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi in company of top management Staff of the Institution paid traditional Sallah homage to the Governor at the Government House Maiduguri on Wednesday
22nd August 2018.
Governor Shettima stated that the Borno State Government intends to recruit over a thousand teachers to teach in these newly built schools be-cause, according to him, most of the existing teach-ers are incompetent and lack the skills to fit into the modern ways of teaching. He stressed that the gov-ernment will have to solicit for the cooperation and understanding of members of the University commu-nity in the form of volunteer teachers adding that he too will take time off to participate in the teaching
being himself, a one- time teacher.
He further pointed out that the World Health Organi-
zation and the European Union records revealed that
the insurgency in the State has left over fifty-four
thousand (54,000) widows and fifty two thousand
(52,000) orphans who the government now has to
fend for.
He laments that the seven-year period of his
administration has been characterized by wanton kill-
ings and destruction of schools, houses and public
buildings which he said gives credence to the WHO
and EU records. The Governor then commended the
Vice-Chancellor for being focused and steadfast by
not closing the University for a single day throughout
the period of insurgency in the state. Such leadership
style he said, is what should be emulated by those
entrusted with leadership positions and urged him to
maintain the tempo. In his remarks earlier, the Vice-
Chancellor informed the Governor that he has been
the driving force and motivator in the achievements he
recorded in the University adding that the transforma-
tional changes witnessed in the State spurs him to feel
challenged and do the same for the University so that
it does not lack behind academically and in terms of
infrastructure. Professor Njodi further stated that
Governor Shettima and members of his administration
have been very supportive to the yearnings and aspi-
rations of members of the university community espe-
cially in ensuring that the University remained open
throughout the period of insurgency. This, he said, the
Governor did by providing adequate security person-
nel and gadgets, funds and other facilities that really
made members of the University community comforta-
ble and safe enough to continue with their daily aca-
demic activities and programmes.

He then thanked and assured the Governor of the University’s unflinching support to his admin-istration and the Volunteer Teacher Programme stressing that members of the University community will key-in to the programme with a view to making it succeed. The Governor, Professor Njodi further said, has from all intents and purposes shown that education is dear to his heart and assured him of
the University’s support in whatever way possible.
In a related development, a Maiduguri based inter-
national business mogul, Alhaji (Dr.) Muhammadu In-
dimi has expressed his appreciation to the Vice-
Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi and
members of his management team for paying him
Sallah homage and accepting to work with him for
the good of the institution. He added that the Univer-
sity of Maiduguri is now his second home. The Vice-
Chancellor had earlier informed him of the purpose
of the visit, “to pay homage and to thank him for the
planned building of a Centre for Distance Learning
and an international conference centre for the Uni-
versity”. The Management he said is highly apprecia-
tive of this gesture stressing that already the would-
be contractors from Germany and some of his inter-
national associates from Switzerland and Harvard
University have visited the University of Maiduguri
and shown the site for the project and also had a
guided facility tour round the University. He therefore
on behalf of University management thanked him for
this magnanimous gesture and wished him good
health, strength and wisdom and also the courage to
continue with his good philanthropic works to humani-
ty. Meanwhile, an elder statesman and educationist,
Professor Emeritus Umaru Shehu has expressed ap-
preciation to the Management team of the University
of Maiduguri for finding time to pay him the tradi-
tional Sallah homage in his residence.
Such visits, the elder statesman said, always
strengthens the bond of relationship between the
University and members of the larger community
which he observed is a healthy development which
should be sustained. Professor Emeritus Umaru
Shehu, then noted that this singular gesture makes
the immediate community and other stakeholders in
the education sector to always identify with the
University in times of trials and tribulations and
called on the Management not to abandon the tra-
dition. The Vice-Chancellor, had earlier congratu-
lated the elder statesman for the Honorary Award
to be bestowed on him by the University of Ibadan
during the 70th Anniversary of its establishment
coming up in November 2018. The University of
Maiduguri community, the Vice-Chancellor said, will
be there to support and share the joy of the award
of one of its own at the occasion and wished him
good health, long life and prosperity in the coming
years ahead.
The delegation was also at the Palace of His Royal
Highness the Shehu of Borno Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar
Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi to pay him the
traditional Sallah homage. The Shehu then offered
prayers for the continued sustenance of peace in
the University, State and the country in general. He
commended the delegation for finding time to visit
him in his palace and wished the delegation a hap-
py Sallah celebrations.

Professor Aminu emphasized that “it is difficult
for Nigeria to be a Corruption-free country” but
noted that if we can stand for what is right, true
and legal even if nobody is watching us and we
have the collective will to fight corruption, we can
do so. Integrity, self-respect and discipline as
well as the fear of God he said, is what makes a
person wealthy not the looted public funds or the
amount of investments he owns. He then recom-
mended in the interim life imprisonment penalty
without option of pardon by any subsequent gov-
ernment in Nigeria for persons found guilty of
corruption; establishment of special anti-
corruption courts to handle corruption cases and
addressing the causes of corruption. These and
others, according to the Inaugural Lecturer, will
pave way for economic development and busi-
ness prospects for the country. He therefore stat-
ed that “corruption in Nigeria is a journey and we
are yet to reach our destination and that by the
time we reach our destination, then Nigeria will be
a corruption-free-country. When the time comes,
corrupt Nigerians will not be respected in public
places nor be given chances to hold public offices
or positions in Nigeria.” Professional Corruption,
he further stated must be stopped.
FIGHTING CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA: THE JOURNEY SO FAR
N o nation on earth is corruption-free but its
magnitude varies with countries and difficult to
wipe it because corruption is everywhere in
Nigeria.” The above statement forms part of the conclu-
sion of the 73rd Inaugural Lecture Series of the University
of Maiduguri delivered by Professor Aminu Ayuba of
the Department of Business Management on Wednesday
18th July 2018 at the El-Kanemi Hall, University of Mai-
duguri.
In the Inaugural Lecture titled “BUSINESS PER-
SPECTIVE OF FIGHTING CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA: THE
JOURNEY SO FAR,” the Lecturer traced the history of
corruption from the colonial era and dwelt extensively
on the causes of corruption; what constitutes business cor-
ruption; management approach to managing corruption
by anti-craft agencies and combatting of corruption by
governments among others. According to the Inaugural
Lecturer, the kind of corruption in Nigeria is where peo-
ple export stolen money instead of goods, stressing that
any country that has no corruption can attest that it is
difficult to wipe out corruption. He observed that if the
seven principles of management are strictly adhered,
they will help minimize corruption in Nigeria to a mini-
mum level. The principles are; Planning, Organizing,
Staffing, Directing, Coordinating, Budgeting & Control
and reporting feedback. Furthermore, he said that
causes of corruption can easily be determined if statisti-
cal modelling, specification for determining causes, con-
stituents and meditating effects of corruption are imple-
mented as no effort has been made to scientifically de-
termine the exact variables that cause Corruption in Ni-
geria.

Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi has observed that the Associa-
tion of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators
(ANUPA) University of Maiduguri branch has an enor-
mous role to play towards the successful implementation
of policies and programs of the University. He stated
this during a workshop organized by ANUPA, University
of Maiduguri branch, with the theme “Effective and Effi-
cient Policy Implementation” held on Wednesday 19th
and Thursday 20th September 2018 at the El-Kanemi
Hall of the University. Represented by the Deputy Vice-

Haruna Godowoli, the Vice-Chancellor noted that
the enforcement and actualization of the policy
thrust of the University should remain the preoccupa-
tion of all members of the Registry Department, es-
pecially those in the main stream of the University
administration. The University Management he said,
has continued to evolve its own unique culture, prism,
operational modalities administrative strategies, hu-
man, financial and management style in order to
meet the ever increasing demands of schedules. Pro-
fessor Abdullahi Haruna Godowoli also said that the
University cannot afford to leave the younger ad-
ministrators to float on their own and expect them to
make any meaningful contribution to the develop-
ment of the University and to be part of the policy
Implementation and therefore called on the senior
administrative staff to always train the younger
ones and bring them closer in every facet of the Uni-
versity policy implementation bids.
He then expressed gratitude to Chief Mo-
jisola Ladipo whom he said has remained a pillar
and much sought after expert in university admin-
istration and management, for honouring the Invita-
tion extended to her as the guest speaker for the
workshop and hope that the occasion will be full of
excitement and remain evergreen in her memory.
The Registrar, University of Maiduguri Mallam Tijjani
Bukar who was represented by the Deputy Registrar
Council and General Administration Mrs. S.A Bwala,
called on the University Administrators to eschew the
issue of idleness, bye passing of regulations, creat-
ing short cuts and bastardizing procedures in the
system of the University.
She added that in every beginning there is a pro-
cess that leads to the end and there are processes,
procedures, guidelines and regulations which are
expected to be keenly observed. Failure to observe
any of these laid-down regulations she stressed, will
be an invitation to confusion, indiscipline and crises.
She therefore stressed that, the University of
Maiduguri management has now taken new dimen-
sions which has now made it obligatory for those
who are at the helm of managing the University to
brace up in order to ensure that the present crop of
administrators are trained and retained with a view
to measuring up to the realities of modern University
management so as to make the University the Centre
of Excellence. Mrs. Bwala then urged all the partici-
pants present at the workshop to be truthful to them-
selves by taking the right path and paying attention
to the presenters during the workshop as well as ac-
tively participating in all the activities.

The Guest Speaker, Chief Mojisola Ladipo in her
presentation pointed out that the role of a university
administrator is to provide services that will enable
the University perform its tripartite functions of
teaching, research and community service and also
contribute to the University’s image and reputation
through quality accessibility, timeliness and friendli-
ness of service delivery. The Registry she said, is of-
ten rightly described as the Engine Room, without
which most functions and decisions of a University
would lack statutory flavour.

The prevention of non-communicable diseases in
adulthood and middle age is a necessary prep-
aration for healthy aging. To live long, man
must stay physically active. The above state-
ment forms part of the conclusion of a lecture
delivered at the 74th Inaugural Lecture of the
University of Maiduguri by Professor Adetoyeje
Yoonus Oyeyemi of the Department of Medical
Rehabilitation (Physiotherapy) Faculty of Allied
Health Sciences of the College of Medical Sci-
ences on Wednesday 19th September 2018 at
the El-Kanemi Hall.
In the lecture titled “REALITIES AND PROSPECTS
OF LIVING LONG: HOW CAN WE DRINK
FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF ETERNAL YOUTH”,
which is the first inaugural lecture on aging…..
and eldercare by any Nigerian and African
from the perspective of physiotherapy, he
gave an in-depth analysis and definition of
who a physiotherapist is and what he always
strives for which include: what is known
about, why and how we age and what de-
termines aging and longevity; presented cur-
rent approaches mitigating aging and man-
aging the concomitant disease and problems
that comes with aging; offered a glimpse of
what the future holds for man in tackling ag-
ing and concomitant diseases; presented a
modest contribution on aging and eldercare
among others.

and procurement of equipment required
for the past accreditation, staff recruitment
and training as well as the facilitation of
linkages with foreign universities by the
Management.

those who made it possible for the success-
ful graduation of the students and congrat-

According to the lecturer, physiotherapists
provide care to patients and clients with re-
mediatory impairments; restoring functions,
preventing injuries and complications follow-
ing irremediable impairment and maintaining
optimal level of functions and optimum health
related quality of life.
Professor Adetoyeje pointed out that physi-
cal activity is beneficial and its health bene-
fits are known but adherence to physical ac-
tivity and exercise is still low. He added that
the problem of adherence is multifactorial
and to address it requires a global, cross-
disciplinary and interdisciplinary approach.
The lecture therefore stressed that a potent
anti-aging measure is to stay physically ac-
tive. However, he observed that more and
more Nigerians are not physically active and
the elderly population may be much less
physically active when compared to the gen-
eral population. He then recommended that
employers (government and private alike)
consider workplace configurations that allow
workers to work in a standing position so as
to reduce the sitting time during work hours;
establishment of geriatric ward in all the six
tertiary health institutions and centres be ex-
pedited; exercise and physical activity ex-
perts including physiotherapist should as a
matter of routine screen and asses all their
patients and clients ….
especially seniors for their physical activity lev-
el as a matter of routine for a comprehensive
health check and assessment and make age
appropriate recommendations on physical ac-
tivity; aggressive and sustainable national
community campaigns for individuals to take
responsibility for their health and living long
and to emphasize physical activity as medi-
cines for healthy longevity with campaigns
through traditional institutions and religious
centres. Others include: government at various
levels should make conscious efforts to rebuild
the environment by constructing or mandating
the construction of sidewalks, bicycle lanes and
installing street lights on our roads and streets;
establishing neighbourhood gardens and com-
munity and public parks, preventing environ-
mental hazards through effective pollution and
emission control policy implementation; and
government institution of healthcare pro-
grammes that will be free or at a low cost for
the elderly. Enrolling seniors in National Health
Insurance Scheme as a welfare measure should
be considered by the three tiers of govern-
ments.
