IntroductionRead this manual thoroughly before operating orservicing this unit.
Warnings, Cautions, and NoticesSafety advisories appear throughout this manual asrequired. Your personal safety and the properoperation of this machine depend upon the strictobservance of these precautions.
The three types of advisories are defined as follows:
WARNINGIndicates a potentially hazardous situationwhich, if not avoided, could result in death orserious injury.
CAUTIONIndicates a potentially hazardous situationwhich, if not avoided, could result in minor ormoderate injury. It could also be used to alertagainst unsafe practices.
NOTICEIndicates a situation that could result inequipment or property-damage onlyaccidents.
Important Environmental ConcernsScientific research has shown that certain man-madechemicals can affect the earth’s naturally occurringstratospheric ozone layer when released to theatmosphere. In particular, several of the identifiedchemicals that may affect the ozone layer arerefrigerants that contain Chlorine, Fluorine and Carbon(CFCs) and those containing Hydrogen, Chlorine,Fluorine and Carbon (HCFCs). Not all refrigerantscontaining these compounds have the same potentialimpact to the environment. Trane advocates theresponsible handling of all refrigerants-includingindustry replacements for CFCs and HCFCs such assaturated or unsaturated HFCs and HCFCs.
Important Responsible RefrigerantPracticesTrane believes that responsible refrigerant practicesare important to the environment, our customers, andthe air conditioning industry. All technicians whohandle refrigerants must be certified according to localrules. For the USA, the Federal Clean Air Act (Section608) sets forth the requirements for handling, reclaiming, recovering and recycling of certainrefrigerants and the equipment that is used in theseservice procedures. In addition, some states ormunicipalities may have additional requirements thatmust also be adhered to for responsible managementof refrigerants. Know the applicable laws and followthem.

Unit InformationSingle Duct VAV UnitsThe basic unit consists of a sheet metal casing with anair valve, which is used to modulate the air beingdelivered into the occupied zone. The unit is designedto modulate either cooling or heating air between 40°Fand 140°F (4.44°C and 60°C). Air enters the air valvethrough the round or rectangular inlet and exits intothe sheet metal casing to be distributed to the zoneeither through integral round outlets in the casing orthrough rectangular duct attached to the discharge ofthe unit.
The basic unit can also be ordered with factory-mounted electric or hot water heating coils attached tothe discharge.
These re-heat units are used primarily to reheat air-to-zone temperature when the load in the occupied spaceis low.
Primary air is modulated through the VariTrane™ airvalve by rotating the damper blade. All air valves havea round/rectangular inlet for easy fit-up with incomingduct work.
Typical Single Duct VAV UnitsFigure 1. Typical single duct unit; VCCF VCWF, VCEF
Dual-Duct VAV UnitsDual-duct units provide two air valves: one as heatingprimary air and the other as cooling primary air. Bothdischarge into the common outlet, which leads to thezone being controlled. See Figure 2, p. 16.
Units are provided with a slip and drive rectangularduct connection or can be ordered with integral outletplenum.
16 VAV-SVX08N-EN
Sequencing of hot and cold air valve is dependent onjob requirements. One typical control is valves workingin conjunction to respond to zone temperature.
When the cooling valve becomes fully closed orreaches a specified minimum, the heating valve willbegin to modulate or vice versa. The typical result isthat air flowing to the zone varies from maximumdown to a minimum and back up to maximum as loadvaries and controls would cause one air valve to closeand the other to open.
Another typical application is when the unit provides aconstant volume to the zone. When the zone sensor istied directly to the heating valve, it will modulate theheating valve according to the zone temperature.
When the heating valve is fully closed or there is a callfor cooling in the zone, the cooling valve will be atconstant supply. As the space becomes too cool, theheating valve will modulate open, decreasing thecooling valve flow. The typical result is that the airflowing into the zone stays at a constant flow whetherthe unit is heating or cooling.
Factory-installed Trane unit controls available include;
• UC400 — one required per unit• VV550 — two required per unit• UCM — two required per unit

Fan-Powered/Fan-Powered Low-Height VAV UnitsVariTrane™ fan-powered and low-height fan-poweredunits can be either parallel or series, with or without re-heat. Refer to the following figures.

Figure 5. Low height series: LSEF (top) & low heightparallel: LPCF (bottom)
Figure 6. Low height parallel: LPWF (top) & lowheight parallel: LPEF (bottom)
The fan on a series unit runs continuously wheneverthe main air handler unit is in operation. There arethree (3) methods to start the fan: 1) remotely, 2) by aduct pressure switch, or 3) by a combination of both. The particular fan control method may vary from unitto unit, depending upon job needs.
Typically, heater is off while air valve modulatesprimary air and responds to zone temperature. If zonetemperature decreases to the point where a decrease inprimary air will not maintain the desired temperature, the re-heat will be activated to increase thetemperature of the discharge air.
On a parallel unit, the VariTrane™ air valve deliversprimary cooling air to the unit outlet. When the spacetemperature decreases beyond air valve control, the
fan is turned on as the first stage of heat. The fandelivers plenum air from above the occupied space tothe unit outlet, which is mixed with primary air anddelivered to the occupied space.
NNoottee:: Either the fan, the air valve, or both can deliverairflow into the occupied space. In order toprevent primary airflow from exiting through thefan when the fan is not running on a parallel unit,a back draft damper is provided. When the fan isnot running, the efficiency of this system is thesame as a standard single-duct VAV unit.
Typically, the control systems applied to parallel unitscause the air valve to close to zero or a minimum flowbefore the fan is activated. After the fan is activated, theoptional heat will be activated upon further reductionin zone temperature. Therefore, minimal primary air ismixed with the heated air.
VariTrane™ fan-powered unit fan sizes 02SQ–05SQand 08SQ–10SQ were performance tested at .12 in. w.g. and sizes 06SQ and 07SQ were tested at .15 in. w.g.Units are not designed to operate without ducts andbelow these tested static pressures.
NNoottee:: Fan-powered units are available with rectangulardischarge connection only. The optional heateris mounted on the discharge of the unit. Hotwater coils are connected to either the plenuminlet or on the discharge on parallel units, and tothe discharge of series units.

Figure 8. Chilled water sensible cooling unit with hotwater coil
Figure 9. Chilled water sensible cooling unit withelectric heat
The function of the Trane chilled water sensible coolingterminal units is a little different than traditional VAV
Terminal Units. These terminal units are part of assyysstteemm that uses a dedicated outdoor-air unit todistribute outdoor air to an air valve on each terminalunit to meet the ventilation requirements of the zone. Each terminal unit is also equipped with a cooling coilmounted on the plenum inlet. Recirculated air from theplenum (or directly from the occupied space) is drawnin through this cooling coil by the local fan. This cooledair is then mixed with the conditioned (cooled, dehumidified, heated, or humidified) outdoor air fromthe dedicated OA unit, and distributed through thedownstream ductwork to the zone.
In most applications, the water supplied to this localcooling coil is controlled to a temperature above thedew point in the zone. This avoids moisture in the airfrom condensing on the coil, so it operates dry andprovides only sensible cooling. All thedehumidification must then be provided by thededicated outdoor-air unit. Trane chilled water sensiblecooling terminal units are built with a drip pan locatedbeneath the cooling coil, with a moisture sensorinstalled in it, to detect and prevent any moisture fromgetting on the ceiling beneath the units or into theoccupied space below. These terminal units can beconfigured with either a hot water coil or electric heatermounted at the unit discharge.

Due to their weight, the VAV terminal units should besuspended from the uppermost ceiling, independent ofthe false ceiling grid. In fact, VAV terminal units areprimarily designed for installation in the plenum spacebetween the upper most ceiling and the false ceilinggrid below it. See “Weights,” p. 27 for unit weights.Suspension devices are to be supplied by the installer.Units must be installed level and upright. Failure tolevel the unit properly may prevent proper operation ofthe controls and/or terminal unit. Units are notdesigned to be installed vertically. Consequently, thiswill also void the U.L. ratings and any warranty on theunit.
Single-Duct VAV UnitsFigure 10. Single-duct hanging recommendations
Depending upon the size and weight of the single-ductunit, it may be capable of being supported by theductwork that is connected to it. No hanger bracketsare provided on these units since the unit should besupported by means of a hanger strap. The hangerstrap should be secured directly to the unit casing asshown above.
• For cooling only single-duct units or single-ductunits with hot water coil, the unit may be rotated180° for opposite side connections.
• For units with electric heat, the unit can be flippedto either RH or LH connection orientation if modelnumber digit 22 Electrical Connections = F.
Dual-Duct VAV UnitsDual-duct units should be supported by either hangerstraps or by using a threaded rod in conjunction withthe hanger brackets that are provided on the unit.

Duct ConnectionsAll VariTrane™ units should be provided with aminimum of 1.5-duct diameters of straight duct prior tothe inlet of the unit. It is recommended that at least 48inches of straight duct be provided from the dischargeof the units prior to any take-offs or transitions.
IImmppoorrttaanntt:: This is a requirement for electric heat fan-powered units used in applications with100% downward discharge.
In order to maintain good air distributionover the elements and not createturbulence which could cause a limit cutoutthere should be four feet of ductwork, consistent of the discharge dimensions ofthe heater. downstream of the reheat coilprior to any diffuser takeoffs forVariTrane™ electric coils.
1. After all connections are made, check that the entireductwork system is airtight. In some high-pressuresystems, duct sealer may be necessary.
NNoottee:: All inlet duct on the VAV boxes are sizedapproximately 0.125 inches smaller indiameter than the nominal size in order toallow the incoming duct to slide over the inletof the VAV box.
2. Provide insulation around the entire inlet collar (allthe way to the unit casing).
NNoottee:: Use caution not to damage the flow tubeswhen making ductwork connections orinsulating.
3. Cut slits in the insulation for the flow tubes andsecure with duct tape.
4. If the unit is to be installed in a location with highhumidity, external insulation around the heatingcoil should be installed as required.
Water Coil ConnectionsNNootteess:: The following coils have 0.375 inches OD water
coil piping connections.
• Single Duct 1-row coils (inlet sizes 05, 05, 06,08 or 10 only)
• Low Height Parallel Inlet 1-row
• Low Height Parallel Discharge 1-row
All others require a 0.875 inches OD water coilpiping connections.
1. If necessary, you can change the coil connectionfrom left-handed to right-handed (and vice-versa)by disconnecting the coil from the unit and rotatingthe coil like a steering wheel 180°.
NNoottee:: The exception is that the coil connectioncannot be changed on parallel fan poweredunit with hot water coil on plenum inlet.
2. Use port at the bottom for inlet and top for outlet on

single row coils. For multi-row coils, always plumbin counter flow orientation.
• Water inlet is always on the airflow downstreamside of the hot water coil.
• Water outlet is always on the upstream side ofthe hot water coil.
3. Care should be taken to properly support the watercoil piping connections while connecting theadjoining pipe.
4. It is recommended that piping to the water coilshould be done after field-mounted controls, external insulation, and ductwork connections havebeen completed.
IImmppoorrttaanntt:: Do not connect water valve or pipeextensions to the water coil connectionsunless supported.

Several Tracer® UC210/UC400 control sequencesperform direct DAT control of the VAV unit when bothmodulating unit heat and modulating ECM fan arepresent or when modulating unit heat is present on anon-fan-powered VAV unit. Supported modulating unitheat options include proportional hot-water and SCR-controlled electric heat. In these Tracer® UC210/UC400control sequences, the DAT is a control input to the unitcontroller.
IImmppoorrttaanntt:: To ensure good control of the DAT andoverall level of heat being supplied to thezone, it’s critical to locate the DAT sensor ina location in the downstream ductwork thatis not too close to the heating water orelectric coils.
1. Locate mounting location for DAT sensor aminimum of 1.5 equivalent duct diametersdownstream of the heating coils and midwaybetween top and bottom on the side of theductwork.
2. Mount the DAT sensor using the instructionsprovided at the end of this manual.
3. If not already factory wired to unit controller, wireDAT sensor to unit controller using unit schematic.
Electronic Duct TemperatureSensor InstallationVisually inspect the sensor unit and harness fordamage. Return damage or defective products.
Tools required for installation:
• Cutter to release zip tie
• DVM (Digital Volt ohm Meter)
• Appropriate screw driver for mounting screws
• Appropriate drill and drill bit for mounting screws
NNootteess::
• Installer must be a qualified, experiencedtechnician.
• Cut loose harness, verify location.
• Avoid location where excessive vibration, moisture, corrosive fumes or vapors arepresent.
1. Determine the sensor mounting location on theduct. The sensing element is located within 1 inch(25mm) of the end of the sensing probe, and itshould be located in the air stream typical of thetemperature requiring sensing.
2. Use the mounting plate supplied as a template (orrefer to Figure 18, p. 25 for duct mountingdimensions) for mounting hole location.

3. Mount the sensor to the duct using (2) #8–1/6 x 1/2–in sheet metal screws.
Unit Accessibility• Single-duct and dual-duct units provided with hot
water reheat have an access panel located on the
UUnniitt IInnssttaallllaattiioonn
26 VAV-SVX08N-EN
side of the water coil. All other single-duct and dual-duct units are provided without access, as allfunctioning components are external to the unit.
• Fan-powered terminals are provided with a slidingside access.
• Low-height terminal units have a removablebottom panel.
ClearancesFor proper service, it is recommended that at least 3inches” of side clearance be provided to service andaccess single-duct and dual-duct terminals units.
• Fan-powered VAV units have a plenum inlet thatmust be clear of obstructions. Allow at least 36inches of clearance in front of the side access andplenum opening.
• Low-height fan-powered terminals require thesame plenum clearance requirement that applies tothe standard fan-powered units. However theaccess to the internal components is located on thebottom of the unit.
• Fan-powered VAV units with Suppressor attenuatorrequires at least 4.5 inches (6 inches preferred)clearance above the plenum opening.
It is also recommended that 6 inches of clearance beprovided to the top and bottom of all the units.
NNoottee:: The minimum clearance for controls and heatercontrols should be 36 inches for all modelsexcept units with 575-volt electric heaters, whichrequire 48 inches of clearance. NEC™ and/orlocal codes override all clearance requirements.
Mounting ActuatorIImmppoorrttaanntt:: When installing or replacing the actuator
tighten the actuator set screw per themanufacturer’s instructions. Failure tofollow the manufacturer’s specificationsmay result in unit malfunction.
Trane offers a factory-mounted actuator with a 90-second drive time. The actuator drives 1° per second. Afield-installed actuator may be used if desired. Theactuator shaft has a 0.5 inch diameter and is designedto travel clockwise to close the damper and counter-clockwise to open the damper. There is an indicator onthe end of the actuator shaft that can be used todetermine the position of the damper.
Stand-alone UnitsStand-alone UCM 4.2When there is no communication to the UCM controland the unit is in the stand-alone mode the controlaction is determined by the auxiliary temperaturesensor located on TB3-5 and TB3-6 terminals on theUCM board. In order for the auxiliary sensor to
determine the control action (heat, cool) it must belocated in the supply duct, upstream of the VAV unit. The auxiliary temperature is then compared to the zonetemperature. If the supply air temperature is 10degrees above the zone temperature, then the controlaction will be heat. If the supply air temperature is lessthan or equal to the zone temperature, then the controlaction will be cool. If the supply air temperature isbetween the zone temperature and the zonetemperature + 10ºF (5.5°C) [zone temperature < supplyair temperature < zone temperature + 10ºF] (5.5°C), thecontrol action remains the same and the UCM controlsto the minimum flow set point. If an auxiliary sensor isnot installed the UCM will retain the last control actionin effect.
Stand-alone VV550 LonTalk ControlWhen there is no communication to the VV550 controland the unit is in the stand-alone mode the controlaction is determined by the auxiliary temperaturesensor located on TB3-5 and TB3-6 terminals on theVV550 board. The control must also be configuredthrough the Inputs Tab of Analog Input 4 as PrimarySupply Air Sensor. In order for the auxiliary sensor todetermine the control action (heat, cool) it must belocated in the supply duct, upstream of the VAV unit.
Stand-alone UC400When there is no communication to the UC400 controland the unit is in the stand-alone mode the controlaction is determined by the auxiliary temperaturesensor located on AI5 terminals on the UC400 control. This input may have to be changed from AI4 (DischargeAir Input) as wired from the factory. In order for theauxiliary temperature sensor to determine the controlaction (heat, cool) it must be located in the supply duct, upstream of the VAV unit. The auxiliary temperature isthen compared to the zone temperature. If the supplyair temperature is 10°F above the zone temperature, then the control action will be heat. If the supply airtemperature is less than or equal to the zonetemperature, then the control action will be cool. If thesupply air temperature is between the zonetemperature and the zone temperature +10°F (5.5°C)[zone temperature < supply air temperature < zonetemperature +10°F] (5.5°C), the control action remains
UUnniitt IInnssttaallllaattiioonn

the same and the UC400 controls to the minimum flowset point. If an auxiliary sensor is not installed theUC400 will retain the last control action in effect.
Stand-alone UC210When there is no communication to the UC210 controland the unit is in the stand-alone mode the controlaction is determined by the auxiliary temperaturesensor located on AI3 terminals on the UC210 control. From the factory, this input is configured for dischargeair temperature and needs to be field reconfigured assupply air temperature using Tracer® TU. In order forthe auxiliary temperature sensor that is configured forsupply air temperature to determine the control action(heat, cool) it must be located in the supply duct, upstream of the VAV unit. The supply air temperatureis then compared to the zone temperature. If the supplyair temperature is 10°F above the zone temperature, then the control action will be heat. If the supply airtemperature is less than or equal to the zonetemperature, then the control action will be cool. If thesupply air temperature is between the zonetemperature and the zone temperature +10°F (5.5°C)[zone temperature < supply air temperature < zonetemperature +10°F] (5.5°C), the control action remainsthe same and the UC210 controls to the minimum flowset point. If an auxiliary temperature sensor is notinstalled and configured for supply air temperature, theUC210 will retain the last control action in effect.
Bottom AccessAn optional bottom access can be provided in thecasing of fan powered series or parallel terminal unit.
The 22-gauge door is lined with 1 inch, 26-gauge, dualwall insulation and thermal lined with 1 inch – 1 lb.density fiberglass insulation with a 3.85 R-value.
Each door includes 1 to 6 cam locks that are used tosecure the door to the casing.
The cam lock engages a metal encapsulated frame onthe unit that encloses the unit insulation to prevent airerosion.
The cam lock engagements are interlocked using a flathead screwdriver. Once unlocked, the entire doorassembly can be removed for access.

Fan Motor AmperageReference unit submittal data and motor nameplate.
Adjusting the SCR Motor SpeedControlIn order to make units more convenient and efficient tobalance, an SCR (silicone control rectifier) is providedas standard on all fan-powered units.
The SCR is located on the side of the fan control box.To adjust the speed of the motor, the external knobmust be rotated either clockwise or counterclockwisedepending on the desired speed adjustment.
There is an internal potentiometer setting on the SCRcontroller that can be accessed by removing the controlbox cover. This internal potentiometer is set at thefactory to the specific motor voltage.
It may be necessary to adjust this in the fielddepending on the building power factor.

NNoottee:: Do not set this potentiometer below the voltageof the fan motor.
Electrically Commutated Motor(ECM)Figure 22. ECM control board
Trane offers an energy efficient ECM motor as a motoroption. The optional Tracer® UC210 and UC400 unitcontrollers directly interface with the ECM to controlfan airflow and to do fan on/off control. With other unitcontrol options, the ECM Control Board is used to setthe fan airflow set point while the unit controller does
fan on/off control via a binary output. The followingtables provide a mapping from fan percent-on settingto fan airflow in CFM for each fan type and size. Otherfan settings can be determined either by interpolatingfrom these tables or by using the following equation:
• CFMsetting = CFMmin + {(Potentiometer Setting) x[(CFMmax - CFMmin)/100]}
There is an LED on the ECM control board, which willblink one time for every 100 CFM of motor setting. Forexample, the LED on a unit set for 790 CFM will blinkseven (7) times. The LED on a unit set for 800 CFM willblink 8 times.
NNoottee:: This feature only verifies that the CFM is setproperly. This feature does not indicate at whatspeed the motor is actually running.
The ECM must be load tested. In other words, the fanmust be connected to properly test the ECM. Analternate fan-interface board is available with less-controls and factory-mount-of-third-party-unit-controlsoptions that allows for fan modulation and fan on/offcontrol via the unit controller.

MaintenancePeriodic maintenance of the VariTrane™ product isminimal, but necessary for efficient operation. Routinemaintenance consists of inspecting/replacing the airfilters of the fan-powered terminals.
MotorsBoth the Permanent Split Capacitor( PSC) and theElectrically Commutated Motor (ECM) require nolubrication during its normal life of operation.
Fan WheelRoutinely inspect the fan wheel for dirt or debris andcleaned as necessary.
FilterRoutinely inspect and/or replace the filter on fan-powered terminals depending on the environmentalconditions of the plenum.
Filter Change Out• To remove the filter, turn each of the filter retaining
clips 90° (CW or CCW)
• Remove the filter and replace with new filter of thesame frame size.
• Return the filter clips to their retaining position byturning them 90° (CW or CCW) back to their originalposition.
Water Coil• Periodically inspect water coils and clean fins.
• Water coils are provided with an access panel asstandard to assist with inspection and cleaning.

Figure 44. Standard motor removal
Standard height fan-powered series and parallel fanmotors are replaceable through the filter opening andthe standard sliding side access panel. To access thefan motor, the fan housing must be detached byremoving the mounting bolts that hold the housing tothe fan board. Removing the entire housing allows thefan motor, fan housing, and fan wheel to be re-alignedon a workbench or floor and prevent any possible fanwheel rubbing that may occur. Removing the housingwill provide access to the motor shaft set screw thatholds the fan wheel to the motor shaft.
68 VAV-SVX08N-EN
The low height fan assembly has been designed to beremoved and replaced as a complete unit.
SCR AssemblySCR solid state relays are used to switch a single heaterstage on and off. An intelligent (Master) relay is usedfor all single phase applications. For three phaseapplications, a Master-Slave configuration is used toswitch two legs of three phase power to the heaterstage. The Master Relay controls one legindependently, and provides a control signal to theSlave Relay, which controls the second leg.
Figure 45. Typical heat sink fin orientation
Bottom View
Every Master or Master/Slave relay combination ismounted on a heat sink to prevent the relays fromoverheating during normal operation. The SCRassembly must always be mounted with the heat sinkfins oriented vertically (see above) with a minimumclearance of 0.5 inches on all sides of the heat sink forcooling. Where additional cooling slots are provided inthe heater, the VAV unit must be mounted with aminimum of 1 inch clearance in front of the slots.
When the 0-10 VDC control voltage is present at theMaster relay in both single and three phaseapplications, an ON indicating LED light on the Masterrelay will blink continually (approximately 0.5 secondson, 1.0 seconds off). If the load side voltage is alsopresent at the relay(s), the Master relay LED and theSlave relay LED blink rate will increase as the controlsignal increases. When the control signal reaches amaximum of 10 VDC, all LEDs will be lit continuously, indicating that the relays are full-open andcontinuously conducting. If the control signal is presentin three phase applications while the load side voltageis not, only the Master relay LED will light and the blinkrate will be constant.
If the SCR assembly does not appear to be functioningproperly, verify that all required voltages are presentand all that all wiring is properly connected. If all theseconditions are verified, and the SCR LED does not lightand/or the SCR relay does not conduct, the entire SCRheat sink assembly should be changed out. IndividualMaster or Slave relays should not be replaced.
