Why Use Safety Belts?

Because YOU are at risk!• Every time you are in a car, you are at risk of getting into

a car crash– Every 5 seconds a crash occurs.– Every 7 seconds a property damage crash occurs.– Every 10 seconds there is a traffic related injury.– Every 12 minutes someone dies in a roadway crash.– Every 4 days an employee dies in a work-related roadway crash.

• Most fatal crashes occur within 25 miles of home and at speeds of less than 40 mph.

• 1 out of 3 people will be seriously injured in a car crash sometime during their lives.

Safe Drivers Need Safety Belts Too

• Jumping off a three story building is similar to the force of a crash at 30 mph.

• Crashing at speeds as low as 12 mph can kill an unbuckled occupant.

• Safety belts reduce the risk of death for those riding in the front seat by about 45%.

• Safety belts reduce the risk of death for those driving pickup trucks by 60-65%. (NHTSA)

We All Pay for Crashes• When you are involved in a traffic crash:

• You pay: Insurance premiums, fines and fees, time off work, rehabilitation, vehicle repair/replacement….

• When others are involved in traffic crashes you pay:

• The general public pays nearly ¾ of all crash costs, primarily through insurance premiums, taxes, delays and lost productivity. {NHTSA, Economic Impact, 2002}

• The average costs per fatal crash in Ohio is more than $3.4 million. Costs include medical care, lost productivity, property damage and an increased strain on community services.

Reduce Your Risk.. Buckle Up!

• Safety standards that govern lap and shoulder belts require that they withstand up to 6,000 pounds of force without failing. (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard)

• Safety belts reduce your chances of dying in a crash by 45% and being injured by 50%.

• Safety belts also prevent total ejections from the car during a crash.– 75% of car passengers who are totally ejected during a

crash are killed.
