James Cook: A Small Town, Canadian Athlete with Big World Dreams 3
Introduction High performance sport is a relatively recent addition to my life. Growing up, I maintained
an active lifestyle through involvement with recreational soccer, water polo, diving, and rugby. It
was not until 2004, upon witnessing my first Ironman triathlon, that I became interested in the
sport that would revolutionize my attitude toward physical activity, competition, and life.
Growing up in the Okanagan Valley and watching thousands compete in Ironman Canada
sparked a fire under my belt that prompted me to join my high school swim and cross‐country
teams in hopes of one day attempting an Ironman myself. This day came in August of 2008,
when I completed the annual race in 11:21:36, and placing 4th in the 18‐24 age group.
I can confidently say that Ironman and triathlon have changed my life for the better.
Completing Ironman Canada unveiled a passion for healthy living and sport of which I was
previously unaware. Upon returning to the University of Victoria for my second year of studies, I
switched my undergraduate degree from Biology to Kinesiology in accordance with my
newfound passion. I joined Team X Triathlon, where I competed as an age‐group athlete under
the guidance of Steve Chater, putting up multiple podium performances and qualifying for the
Age‐Group World Championships in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
During the 2012 season, I have earned the qualifications to garner a Triathlon British
Columbia Elite card as well as the privilege of competing in International Triathlon Union (ITU)
events for the 2012 season.
Triathlon Goals and Objectives:
My 2012 season will mark a breakthrough in triathlon as I will have the opportunity to
represent Canada in both ITU Continental Cup competitions as well as the 2012 ITU Age Group
World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. I plan to tackle the new challenge of ITU draft‐
legal racing head‐on and continue to develop my skills in training and racing at a high‐
performance level. Looking forward to the 2013 season and beyond, I will be continuing to train
and race with the goal of achieving world cup standards and qualifying to represent Canada at
major events as well as multi‐sport games.

Sponsor Support By receiving sponsorship support I will commit to representing and promoting your company,
products, and values with the same integrity that I hold for myself throughout all of my life’s endeavors. I
will commit to carrying your name with honour, humility, and respect. Your name will thus be associated
with an athlete that is not only dedicated to performance, but one that holds themselves to the highest of
standards while training, racing, studying, and being involved in the community. As a sponsored athlete I
will proudly promote and enhance your company name at a local, national, and international level in
2012 and beyond.
Clearly sponsoring an athlete is a major investment, and I appreciate all the time you have given to
consider this opportunity. In the document below I have outlined my needs by providing my operational
budget identifying that my need for sponsor support is great. I am looking for someone who is willing to
join me on my journey through high‐performance sport in any way possible. The support that I receive
from sponsors will go directly to helping me achieve my life’s goals and ambitions. Any contribution in
support of these endeavors is greatly appreciated.
Projected Operational Budget: 2012 Competitive
Season
The lifestyle of an amateur athlete is not as luxurious as some might expect. On top
of the expenses associated with equipment, coaching, race entry, and travel, a vigorous
training schedule severely limits the ability to work and obtain a regular source of income.
Rising costs of fuel for vehicles, as well as myself, are also factors that influence my budget
for 2012. Below, you can see a breakdown of my budget for the 2012 competitive season.
As you can see, with my proposed schedule I am predicting a deficit of nearly $10,000.
Inability to fill this deficit will hinder my ability to train and travel, especially to
competitions in which I am representing Canada, such as the World Championships.
