Chapter 27 !!!!!!!!!!!!
Wednesday January 29th, 2014 11:22pm !Today was a really tough day — professionally/politically speaking. !I went out with John for drinks after I’d spent $500 on awesome new wardrobe additions from Anthropologie, and then I felt much better. Johnny listened and I got the whole goddamned story out—about Senator Coley humiliating me at the IP meeting today, and Senator Burke being the sleazy slimeball that he is and all that jazz. So that helped greatly—just to get it all out. !And then I even got after-hours emails from Alan Johnson and Senator Coley and Michael Kirkman and even Mister Geofffrey Collver himself ;0) !He said “good pitch” as to the idea I’d thrown to the editor at The Dispatch today, to try’n score an op-ed place in this Sunday’s newspaper. So we’ll see what happens… !I can feel the powers of the Universe shifting around me, and it’s exciting. I’m just trying to remember to keep breathing through it all, as it’s happening…

Meeting w/ Sen. Coley
Marissa Varcho <[email protected]> Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 12:55 PMTo: "Groseclose, Emily" <[email protected]>Bcc: Marissa Varcho <[email protected]>
Hi Emily,
That works. I will plan on it.
Also, do you happen to know if committee is meeting next week and if so, whether SubSB43 will be up for a vote?
Thanks,
Marissa

Dear Ms. Varcho:
I would be interested in putting together a pro-‐con package with a column taking your side of the matter
and a column taking the opposite side.
But that’s not something we can organize in time for Sunday publication.
How soon do you expect the bill to move through the legislature and reach the governor’s desk?

Hi Mr. Sheller,
Thank you for your response. I greatly appreciate it.
I'm not sure how quickly the bill is going to move, but the pressure is immense to get it out of the Senate Civil
Justice Committee and onto the Senate floor for a vote ASAP. The committee schedule is supposed to come out later
today as per an email I received this morning from CJC Chairman/Senator Coley's legislative aide. It should
indicate whether or not SubSB43 will be on the docket and/or up for a vote to get it out of committee next
Wednesday.
I think once it's passed the Senate floor, then it will have to go to the House again, since the Senate CJC decided to
adopt SB43 with pending amendments in a substitute bill rather than accept the companion legislation,
SubHB104, as was voted out of the House Judiciary Committee this past December. But honestly, I have no idea
whether they will just skip that step altogether or what-- the House has shown very little interest in being involved
with it. That's about all I know thus far from my own personal involvement, speaking with the different mental-
health advocacy organization directors, and my meeting with Senator Coley last week. Senator Coley requested
that I meet with him again next Tuesday to continue reviewing the provisions of my proposed compromise-- so
that's set for February 4th at 10:30am at the Statehouse. But I really don't know what implications such an
opportunity could even hold at this point. I just have no idea.
I feel bad for requesting a spot for this Sunday now-- I apologize for my impatience. The pressure just feels very
intense, the way they are handling this legislation-- like they just don't want to be bothered by it anymore, despite
its great potential if they'd only consider a compromise. I know it is what it is, and that it will be what it will be--
but I would greatly appreciate any opportunity to write in support of the cause in the meantime.
Hopefully that answers your question, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any others. I would be
happy to keep you updated as I learn more from Senator Coley's office if you'd like. Just let me know what I can do.
Sincerely,
Marissa K. Varcho

OK, I’ll see about lining up someone to write a column defending the bill.
Please understand that you will have 800 words in which to make your case. The same limit will apply to the
opposing column.
But don’t go ahead with it yet. I need to see if we can find someone to write in defense of the current bill.
Also, if we go ahead with this, we will need a good quality head-‐and-‐shoulders photo of you. Do you have
such?

Understood. I can work within any parameters. Just let me know all of them if/when it comes time to start. I willmake it work whichever way it needs to fit.
Senator Burke might be a good candidate for the defense. He was at the IP meeting Senator Coley held this pastWednesday to vigorously support SB43 as its primary co-sponsor.
Would the attached headshot work? It was professionally taken last October. I have the full high-res version if youwant or need to crop it yourself. I have a couple other options too, if you'd prefer something else. Just let me know.
Thanks,Marissa

Hi Mr. Sheller,
Do you prefer Mr. Sheller or Glenn? I wasn't sure and wanted to ask in lieu of causing potential disrespect.
I just received the email below from Senator Coley's legislative aide, and SB43 is potentially up for a vote next week.
Sincerely,
