January 2016
I hope that you have had a wonderful Christmas
season with family and friends and that you are
ready to begin a new year. I have not been very
good about making New Year’s resolutions in
past years, but this year, I have my list of
resolutions. I am going to be walking and
exercising more and eating healthier foods.
Now that I have sent this to the whole group,
maybe I will keep my resolutions and get back
in shape!
Our Christmas dinner and auction was lots of
fun. I would like to extend my appreciation to
Susan Pharr for hosting the party in her lovely
new home. It was a great way to start the
Christmas season. If you were unable to come,
please know that you were missed.
By now you have received a note from our
treasurer letting you know that we have not yet
reached our goal of $1000.00 for our two grants
in aid. If you can help us reach that goal, it
would be appreciated. One thing that we have
discussed is that we might use the money that
we raised at our Bunco evening to help. Also,
if there is enough interest, we might try another
Bunco (or Pokeno) evening in March since we
don’t have a meeting scheduled that month.

Presidents Letter cont:
It is never too late to bring a friend to a meeting.
January would be a particularly good time to bring
someone since Dorothy will be presenting our
orientation that evening. Dorothy has a way of
making information that we have heard before seem
new and interesting. Thank you, Dorothy for all of
your hard work and for the time that you put into our
special celebrations and orientations.
Last, but not least, our nominations committee
(Barbara Taylor, Vicky Herr, and Susan Pharr) are
working on completing the slate of officers, which
will be presented for a vote in February. Please
consider taking on a leadership role during the 2016-
2018 biennium. I have found that there is always
someone willing to answer questions and to help
when needed. We have a small, but a strong chapter.
Let’s keep it going with a new dedicated group of
officers.
I hope that you have a very Happy New Year!!!
Debbie

Money Matters from Treasurer Pat December/January
Of course the main focus of the treasury this month is the
auction. We had a lovely time. Thanks to Susan Pharr and the
members who attended and participated in this fun event. As
you know, the purpose of this event (other than the great
fellowship) is to fund our Grant-in-aid scholarships. We have
given two $500 scholarships for the last few years and would
love to do that again this year, but we have a little way to go.
The initial deposit was $642. Since then, I have received a $50
donation. I am hoping to receive contributions from other
members who were not able to attend. As we hear so often, no
amount is too small. It would be wonderful if every member
did their part and participated.

I have contacted Bill Barnes (from Haslet, TX). He is the

Strickland update... Strickland...the work carries on thanks to the devoted
volunteers who rise to the challenges! We will continue our
service and we would like to provide for the teachers some
school supplies to kickoff the New Year. Last year, we had a
great collection of pencils, paper, erasers, dry markers, art
supplies etc. that was laid out "garage sale" style with a note
to take what you need. There was not a problem with the
materials being sought after! Please bring what you can in
the way of supplies to our January meeting. They will be
collected and sent on to Strickland. With many thanks for
your help.....
Grant-in-Aid Progress...believe it or not, the time has come
again to look for perspective candidates for our grant-in-aid
selection. That process will begin in January. Again, it is
for two $500.00 grants given to talented high school seniors
who seek a degree in education once they graduate. Our
auction provides the funding, so the hope is we will be able
to carry on the tradition through your support. I will keep
you posted on the selection process.

THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL
KAPPA PHI CHAPTER
Minutes for December 3, 2015
The Kappa Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met for our annual Christmas auction on
December 3, 2015, at the home of Susan Pharr.
Fifteen members and one guest were in attendance. A brief business meeting was conducted prior to the auction with
President Debbie Moss presiding.
Minutes of the September, 2015 meeting were approved as submitted.
Treasurer Pat Bielamowicz informed us that a donation to the auction had been received from Jan Waggoner.
Debbie asked that we let her know if anyone needs a hard copy of the yearbook.
Vicki Herr reminded us that grant applications are due in January.
Second Vice-President Dorothy Carroll informed us that we have nine prospective members.
Barbara Taylor informed us that the Nominations Committee will be preparing a new slate of officers in January.
She encouraged members to volunteer for various positions.
Vicki Herr encouraged us to read the current DKG Bulletin.
The business meeting was adjourned and the auction commenced.

Have you checked out it out? There are many good articles such as “What Are Our
Teenagers Really Doing Online?” and “Courageous Female Literary Characters”
as well as articles highlight Nancy Drew and is DKG a sorority or what? However
the article “Strengthening DKG and the Profession, One Educator at a Time: An
EEC Award” by Pascal E Baily had a tip that could be implemented by our own
Kappa Phi chapter. The idea is an “award that chapters could implement with little
effort and reward as each chapter was able - just some way to show educators they
are positively recognized for the great work that they do in the classroom.” Non
members could even be considered for this award, but I would think we could
easily honor one of our own. This would be one way to highlight key women
educators and also another way to introduce DKG to future members as well as to
the local community.
